To make a new video play earlier in a YouTube 24/7 rotation, set the YouTube playlist to Manual ordering, then move the video to the first position (or another priority position). You can do this in YouTube Studio or, for repeatable changes, with the YouTube Data API. YouTube’s documented playlist tools do not provide an automatic rule to promote every new upload in a separate 24/7 rotation.
What “prioritize” means in a 24/7 rotation
A YouTube video playlist is an ordered list: moving a video toward the top makes it earlier in that list. That is separate from the live broadcast itself. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes broadcasts and streams, while an encoder or hosted service supplies the audio-video feed. Changing a YouTube playlist’s order does not, by itself, change the content already being delivered by a live stream.

First confirm that your 24/7 playback setup actually uses the playlist or sequence you are maintaining. YouTube’s broadcast documentation does not establish that every external or hosted player automatically reads a channel playlist. A YouTube channel playlist, a live broadcast, an encoder feed, and an HLS media playlist are different layers; changing HLS segment order is not a way to reorder videos in a YouTube playlist.

- Open the playlist in YouTube Studio. Select the playlist that your 24/7 workflow is intended to play.
- Set its ordering to Manual. A specified position requires manual sorting; an automatic ordering option will not let you assign the position you want.
- Add the new video if it is not already included. Reordering an item does not add it to the playlist.
- Drag the video to the first position. Put it elsewhere in the list if you want it prioritized without playing first.
- Check the result and the playback path. Confirm the saved order in the playlist and verify that your actual 24/7 setup consumes that playlist or its maintained sequence.
If your policy is “newest first,” apply it consistently whenever you add a video. Each new item moved to the top pushes older items farther down, so consider whether that is the desired rotation rather than simply giving one video a temporary boost.

Set playlist position with the YouTube Data API
For a repeatable workflow, an authorized script can locate the relevant playlist item and update its position. The position is zero-based: 0 is first, 1 is second, and so on. The playlist must be manually ordered.
- List the playlist items. Use the playlist ID to retrieve the items, then identify the target video and its playlist item ID. A video ID and a playlist item ID are not interchangeable.
- Prepare the update. The request must identify the playlist, the playlist item resource, and the playlist item ID; set
snippet.positionto0for the first position, or to another zero-based position. - Update and verify. Call
playlistItems.update, then check that the item appears in the intended location and that your playback workflow uses this playlist ordering.
Google for Developers’ current API documentation, retrieved in 2026, assigns playlistItems.update a quota cost of 50 units per operation. That is the API quota impact of an update, not a recommended number or frequency of updates.

Does YouTube automatically put each new upload first?
The official playlist and live-stream documentation cited here explains manual playlist ordering and API position updates, but does not describe a built-in rule that automatically promotes every newly uploaded video in a separate 24/7 rotation. Treat promotion as a manual maintenance task or build a custom automation workflow that explicitly updates the playlist. Do not assume that starting or reconnecting a live broadcast will reorder its playlist.

Common problems and fixes
- The video will not stay at the top: check that the playlist is set to Manual ordering, then reorder it again.
- The script updates the wrong item or fails to find it: verify the playlist item ID as well as the video ID, and include the playlist and resource identifiers in the update.
- The new video is absent from the rotation: add it to the playlist before trying to move it.
- The live stream keeps playing the old sequence: check whether the actual player or hosted playback workflow reads that playlist. Playlist ordering does not alter an encoder feed or guarantee that an external player consumes the list.
- The stream order differs from an HLS manifest: HLS segment manifests govern delivery segments, not the order of videos in a YouTube playlist. Change the playlist or the playback system’s own sequence instead.
