To print an AI-generated school portrait at the right size, check the image’s pixel dimensions, preview the crop for your chosen print format, then divide the cropped pixel width and height by the print’s width and height in inches. The results are the effective pixels per inch (PPI). For a portrait viewed close up, 300 PPI is a useful planning target—not a guarantee or a universal minimum.
What size can your portrait print?
The answer depends on the image’s actual pixel dimensions and the final print size, not how sharp it looks on a screen or what resolution number appears in its file properties. Adobe explains that printed image resolution is the number of pixels assigned to each inch of the print: Adobe’s guide to image size and resolution.

First find the original or highest-resolution export, then check its pixel width and height. Avoid using a messaging-app or cloud preview if it may have been compressed; HP notes that the available copy may be smaller than the original. Once you know the intended print dimensions and crop, calculate the effective PPI for each side:
Effective PPI = cropped pixel dimension ÷ corresponding print dimension in inches

For example, a cropped 2400 × 3000-pixel portrait printed at 8 × 10 inches gives 300 PPI in both directions: 2400 ÷ 8 = 300 and 3000 ÷ 10 = 300.
How many pixels do common print sizes need?
At 300 PPI, these are approximate pixel dimensions for common formats. Utah Valley University Printing Services publishes these figures as guidance for images at 300 PPI: UVU printing tips.

| Print size | Approximate pixels at 300 PPI |
|---|---|
| 4 × 6 inches | 1200 × 1800 |
| 5 × 7 inches | 1500 × 2100 |
| 8 × 10 inches | 2400 × 3000 |
| 8.5 × 11 inches | 2550 × 3300 |
These are planning figures, not pass-or-fail limits. Adobe describes 300 PPI as an industry standard for high-quality prints, particularly smaller prints viewed close up, while noting that large-format prints viewed from farther away can work at lower resolutions: Adobe’s explanation of print resolution. If your file falls below the figures, you can still print it; expect less fine detail, especially when viewed nearby. The acceptable result depends on the output size, viewing distance, paper, and printer or lab.
Crop for the print shape before calculating
A portrait’s aspect ratio—the relationship between its width and height—may not match your frame or print. When you fill a print with an image of a different shape, the edges are cropped. When you fit the whole image, blank borders may remain. This is a framing choice, separate from sharpness, but it changes which pixels are available for the final print.

- Make memories last with photos that resist fading for decades when printed with Original HP Ink
- Choose the intended print size or frame, such as 5 × 7 or 8 × 10 inches.
- Preview the portrait in that shape and choose fill-and-crop or fit-with-borders.
- Check that the face, head, shoulders, and any school backdrop or lettering remain inside the final frame.
- Use the cropped image’s pixel dimensions—not the uncropped dimensions—to calculate effective PPI.
UVU advises evaluating resolution at the final print size; enlarging an image to twice its original dimensions reduces its effective resolution by half. Cropping also reduces the pixel dimensions available for printing, so do the calculation only after deciding the final frame.
Prepare the file for home printing or a lab
Printing at home
For a home printer, use paper suited to the intended photo output and match the printer’s media setting to the paper loaded. HP’s photo-printing guidance also recommends checking the source image dimensions and making a test crop; a small test can reveal framing or color issues before you use a full sheet. See HP’s guide to printing photos.

Ordering from a print lab
Before submitting the file, check the chosen lab’s current supported print sizes, crop or bleed requirements, accepted file formats, and color instructions. Those details vary by provider; follow its specifications rather than assuming every service handles the file the same way.

What changing the resolution setting does—and does not do
Changing a PPI value without resampling changes how existing pixels map to physical inches; it does not add image detail. Resampling changes the pixel dimensions, but added pixels do not restore original captured detail. If the portrait has fewer pixels than your target size calls for, compare the resulting effective PPI with your viewing needs rather than treating an enlarged file as newly captured detail.

There is no single maximum print size that can be given for every AI-generated portrait. It depends on the particular file’s dimensions, final crop, chosen print size, and how closely the result will be viewed. Use any school or frame instructions where provided, and confirm output requirements with your printer or lab.
