There is no reliable universal percentage of an IKEA item’s original price that tells you what it is worth used. To set an asking price, identify the exact item, check its condition and completeness, compare local listings for the same model, and use the current replacement price as context—not as a resale formula. IKEA’s Buyback & Resell estimate can provide a separate benchmark, but it is store credit and the final offer depends on an in-store inspection.
How to set an asking price
- Confirm the item’s identity. Record its name, article number or model, dimensions, color or finish, and whether it is still sold. Check product labels, manuals, or IKEA product information; do not assume a similar-looking piece is the same model.
- Describe its condition honestly. Check for missing hardware, sticking drawers or doors, instability, stains, scratches, damage, repairs, and modifications. Take clear photos that show both the whole item and any flaws. IKEA’s buyback rules require items to be complete, assembled, functional, clean, unmodified, and in good resaleable condition, though a private buyer may judge condition differently. - Establish replacement-price context. If IKEA still sells the exact item, check its current price. Otherwise, use a genuinely comparable product and be clear that it is only a comparison. A new price helps a buyer understand the alternative; it does not establish a fixed used-furniture discount.
- Compare local listings. Search for the same model, or the closest equivalent in size and condition, in your area. Treat marketplace prices as asking prices, not proof that items actually sold for those amounts. - Choose a price and sale terms. Weigh the item’s condition, completeness, local alternatives, pickup or delivery burden, and how quickly you want to sell. State the dimensions, pickup requirements, and known flaws in the listing. These are practical pricing factors, not a formula published by IKEA.

What IKEA’s Buyback & Resell estimate means
For IKEA U.S., the process starts with the online estimator. If you want to proceed, bring the fully assembled furniture and estimate to a participating store within 30 days of receiving the estimate. A store employee inspects the item and sets the final offer, which may differ from the online estimate. IKEA may refuse an item after checking its identity and condition; you can decline an offer you do not want. If the buyback proceeds, payment is an IKEA refund card, not cash. Check eligibility before making the trip
IKEA lists bookcases and shelf units among categories that may qualify, along with some dressers, tables, cabinets, desks, chairs, stools, and home-organization products. Category alone does not guarantee acceptance: the exact item must be eligible and meet the condition requirements. IKEA excludes various items, including non-IKEA products, standalone components, modified or hacked products, furniture used outdoors, sofas and armchairs, most beds, mattresses and textiles, kitchens, modular wardrobes, appliances, and upholstered or leather products. Review IKEA’s current eligibility list and confirm that a participating location offers the service.

What not to assume about resale value
- There is no supported universal percentage of the original IKEA price or standard depreciation curve for used IKEA furniture.
- A current replacement price is a reference point, not a guaranteed resale value.
