A profitable price starts with a complete cost floor, then rises or falls according to customer value, comparable offers, channel fees and demand. Record materials, every hour in the workflow, packaging, fulfillment, overhead and selling fees for one unit. Set a price that covers those costs and your intended profit, then test it with real sales and review it whenever costs, channels or customers change.
Start with a complete cost floor
A price is sustainable only when each sale contributes enough to pay for the product and the business work behind it. The basic unit-cost floor is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Direct materials + direct labor + allocated overhead + packaging and seller-paid fulfillment + applicable per-unit channel charges.
This floor is not automatically the final retail price. It tells you the lowest level at which the offer can support the business before you consider demand, positioning, discounts, taxes and profit goals. If owner labor is omitted, apparent profit may simply be unpaid work.

Shopify’s pricing guidance likewise says to include materials, labor and other expenses associated with creating a product. Etsy’s seller handbook explains both a cost-led calculation and a market-led check. Use the cost floor to avoid selling below cost, then test whether customers accept a price above it.
Shopify’s product-pricing guidance and Etsy’s pricing handbook provide worksheets and examples, but neither sets a universal hourly wage or margin for every maker. Product type, location, scale, audience and channel change the answer.
Build a per-item cost record
Materials and realistic waste
List the quantity and purchase cost of every material consumed by one finished item: fabric, clay, wax, thread, hardware, labels, ingredients or digital production inputs. Include reasonable waste, failed pieces and unusable offcuts when your process generates them. For materials bought in bulk, divide the usable quantity—not merely the package size—into the purchase cost.
Keep a dated cost sheet. When a supplier changes a price, update the per-unit amount rather than relying on memory. If one product has several sizes or variants, maintain a separate bill of materials for each variant.
Labor for the complete workflow
Pay for every repeatable task required to make and sell the item, not only the minutes when your hands are physically making it. Track time spent on:
- Design, preparation, measuring and setup.
- Making, assembly, finishing and quality checks.
- Photography, editing and writing the listing.
- Sourcing materials and maintaining inventory.
- Answering customer messages and handling custom requests.
- Picking, packing, labeling and taking the parcel to the carrier.
- After-sale administration, exchanges and other routine support.
Choose an hourly labor rate that reflects the work’s skill and the income the business needs. Multiply the total time per unit by that rate. A ten-minute packing task repeated for every order matters just as much as a ten-minute production task.

Etsy quotes Quiet Clementine owner Hana Brewster: “Just because you have fun with your business,” doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t pay yourself fairly. Treat that as a principle, not as a published wage recommendation.

Packaging and seller-paid fulfillment
Add the box or mailer, protective material, tissue, labels, inserts, tape and any branded packaging used for one shipment. Include postage or delivery costs that you absorb. If customers pay shipping separately, record the actual shipping charge and the portion you subsidize; a channel may assess its percentage fee on charged shipping as well as the item price.
Allocate indirect overhead
Overhead supports many products and cannot be attached neatly to one unit. Examples include studio or storage rent, equipment depreciation, utilities, insurance, software, photography gear, advertising, market-stall fees and travel. Choose a defensible allocation basis, document it and revisit it when production volume changes.
One practical approach, recommended in Etsy’s examples, is to divide relevant annual overhead by the number of items you expect to produce or sell during that period. If you expect 600 units and annual overhead is $3,000, the provisional allocation is $5 per unit. It is an estimate: producing only 300 units would double the allocation, while 1,200 units would halve it. Update the denominator when your forecast changes.
Account for selling-channel fees
Fees depend on the channel, country, seller status and order details. List fixed listing or order charges, payment-processing fees, percentage fees, advertising charges, currency conversion and any shipping-related assessment. Do not copy a fee from an old article; verify the current schedule for your account and region.

| Charge | Published figure and basis | Qualification |

| Offsite Ads | 15% for sellers below $10,000 in Etsy sales during the preceding 365 days; 12% at or above $10,000; maximum $100 per order | Check current participation rules and eligibility before calculating |
See Etsy’s fee and tax page for the current schedule. These numbers are not universal marketplace costs. Taxes are a separate reserve governed by your jurisdiction and business situation; the cited pricing guidance does not establish one tax percentage for all sellers.
Percentage fees require algebra, not a fixed dollar add-on. If a fee consumes 6.5% of the selling price, only 93.5% remains before other costs. A $1 addition to a price does not create $1 of extra contribution when the fee rises with the price.
Set the floor, target and final price
Separate pay for labor from business profit
First calculate a unit cost that includes your labor rate. Then add the return you want the business to earn after paying that labor. This distinction prevents a product from appearing profitable solely because the maker worked for free.

Worked example with an explicit fee assumption
Suppose one handmade item has these assumed costs:
| Component | Per-unit amount |
|---|---|
| Materials, including tracked waste | $8.00 |
| Labor: 45 minutes at $24 per hour | $18.00 |
| Packaging | $2.00 |
| Seller-paid shipping contribution | $4.00 |
| Allocated overhead | $5.00 |
| Cost before percentage fees | $37.00 |
If the target operating profit is $15, the sale must leave $52 after percentage fees. For illustration only, assume the applicable channel charge is 6.5% of the sale and no other percentage or fixed charge. Solve price × 0.935 = $52; the resulting price is about $55.61. Actual Etsy orders can also incur payment processing, advertising, currency or other charges, so enter your real rates before publishing a price.
Do not apply a universal multiplier
“Double the cost” is a shortcut, not a law of handmade pricing. A multiplier may omit labor, overhead or percentage fees, and the same multiplier produces different margins at different costs. Shopify’s wholesale guide gives doubling cost as an example that creates a 50% wholesale margin under its assumptions, while noting that targets vary by industry and market position.
Understand markup and gross margin
Use precise terms when comparing products or channels:

- Gross profit = revenue minus the defined cost of goods.
- Gross margin = (revenue − cost of goods) ÷ revenue × 100.
- Markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100.
For a product selling at $40 with $24 of included cost, gross profit is $16 and gross margin is 40%. A 40% markup on $24 instead produces a $33.60 price, whose margin is 28.57%. State what you include in cost of goods before comparing margins; one calculation may include packaging and labor while another may not.

Choose a pricing approach that fits the product
| Approach | Starting point | Best use | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost-plus | Complete unit cost plus a chosen profit amount or margin | Predictable production and a clear need to protect a minimum return | Can produce a price the audience will not accept if value and demand are ignored |
| Value-based | Customer’s perceived benefit, meaning, convenience or occasion | Distinctive design, personalization, craftsmanship, durability or gift purchases | Requires evidence about the buyer and a credible explanation of the premium |
| Competitor-based | Comparable offers in the same market | Categories with many genuinely similar products | Competitors may have different costs, scale, quality or unpaid labor |
| Top-down market test | A price the target customer appears willing to pay, followed by process changes to support it | When demand research reveals a strong reference price | Never use it to justify selling below a sustainable cost floor |
| Bottom-up cost build | Materials, labor, overhead and fees assembled into a required price | New products or products with volatile inputs | Needs a market and value check before launch |
Combining methods is usually stronger than choosing one. Cost accounting sets the non-negotiable floor; value and market evidence determine how far above that floor the offer can go. If buyers resist the sustainable price, change the product specification, production process, audience, channel or positioning rather than quietly removing your pay.

Compare like with like
Record comparable offers using the same axes: product category, dimensions, materials, finish, customization, durability, delivery time, packaging, buyer use and sales channel. A mass-produced item may provide context but is not automatically a direct competitor to a one-of-a-kind or small-batch piece.
Identify reasons for a premium
Ask who buys the item, what problem or occasion it serves and which attributes are visible to that buyer. Evidence for a higher price can include a distinctive design, skilled construction, better materials, personalization, repairability, faster delivery or a meaningful gift context. Etsy quotes Montréal map-print seller Olivier Gratton-Gagné describing his own audience: “In that context,” I don’t hesitate to ask for $20 to $135 for a print that costs much less in materials, because those prices make sense for a thoughtful gift for someone you love. That is one seller’s account, not a general price recommendation.
Use clear offer architecture
When products have multiple versions, make the differences legible: standard, upgraded materials, personalization, larger size or rush fulfillment. Each tier should have its own cost record. Avoid a low headline price that requires unpriced customization or excessive support to complete the order.
Best Value
Price for wholesale and retail separately
A wholesale price must pay for labor, production, overhead and selling costs while leaving the retailer room to set a viable retail price. Lower wholesale prices are sustainable only when larger, predictable orders reduce the per-unit cost enough to compensate. Calculate with realistic quantities, minimum order sizes, payment terms, freight and returns instead of assuming that a large order is automatically profitable.
Calculate break-even units
Shopify defines break-even as the point where revenue equals expenses and gives this formula:
Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (unit price − variable cost per unit).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For an illustrative wholesale plan with $600 of monthly fixed costs, a $32 wholesale price and $18 variable cost per unit, contribution is $14 and break-even is $600 ÷ $14 = 42.86, so at least 43 units are needed in that period. Change any assumption—price, variable cost, fixed cost or order volume—and the result changes.
Model direct retail and wholesale as separate channels. Retail may carry higher acquisition, packing and customer-service costs; wholesale may carry lower selling cost per unit but additional samples, terms, freight or account management.
Test prices and review them on a schedule
A launch price is a hypothesis, not a permanent fact. Keep a simple record for each product and channel containing:
- Units offered and sold, inquiries and conversion where available.
- Published price, discounts, coupons and bundle terms.
- Actual materials, labor time, packaging, postage and channel fees.
- Returns, replacements, cancellations and unpaid support time.
- Contribution after variable costs and the resulting margin.
Change one meaningful factor at a time when possible. Etsy suggests trying different prices for similar items and seeking feedback; Shopify recommends monitoring costs, competitors and the market and adjusting as needed. A controlled price test might compare two prices for comparable designs over similar periods while holding photos, delivery promise and promotion constant.
Recalculate after a material or shipping change, a new sales channel, a production-volume change, a new advertising arrangement or a shift in the intended customer. Review overhead allocations at least when your annual forecast changes materially.
Troubleshoot a price that is not working
The calculated price is below your costs
- Check that labor includes preparation, listing, packing, communication and shipping tasks.
- Verify material quantities, waste and packaging consumption.
- Recalculate percentage fees from the full order total, including charged shipping where applicable.
- Revisit overhead allocation if actual production is lower than forecast.
The price covers costs but buyers do not convert
- Confirm that comparisons match your size, materials, finish, delivery and customization.
- Improve the explanation and photography of the value buyers can see.
- Test a different product configuration, audience or channel instead of cutting labor pay.
- Check whether shipping, delivery time or unclear options create friction.
Sales are strong but cash is weak
- Compare the price with actual post-fee contribution, not gross revenue.
- Look for undercounted packing, returns, advertising or customer-service time.
- Check payment timing and wholesale terms against material-purchasing needs.
- Raise prices or redesign the offer if demand supports it.
Wholesale appears attractive but loses money
- Run the break-even calculation with the real order quantity and variable cost.
- Include samples, freight, payment terms, account management and expected returns.
- Set a minimum order or simplify customization if small batches consume too much labor.
A repeatable pricing checklist
- Create a bill of materials for each size or variant and include tracked waste.
- Time the entire workflow and multiply it by your chosen labor rate.
- Add packaging, seller-paid shipping and a documented share of overhead.
- List every fee for the actual channel, country and order configuration.
- Calculate the cost floor, then solve for a price that absorbs percentage fees and desired profit.
- Compare genuinely similar offers and identify the value your buyer recognizes.
- Model direct retail, wholesale and promotional prices separately.
- Publish the price with clear options, delivery terms and customization limits.
- Record actual sales, fees, discounts, returns and contribution.
- Review after cost, volume, channel or customer changes and test adjustments deliberately.
No authoritative source establishes one universal profit margin, hourly maker wage or typical price for all handmade and lifestyle products. A documented cost floor, an explicit profit target and evidence from your own customers provide a more reliable basis than a generic multiplier.
