How to Price Freelance Services Promoted Through LinkedIn

Price the service you sell to a defined result, not to a vague number of hours. On LinkedIn, state the deliverables, assumptions, deadline, client inputs, revision limit, exclusions and payment schedule before you name a fee. Use hourly billing when discovery or scope is uncertain, a fixed project fee when the deliverable is bounded, and a retainer when the client needs recurring capacity.

LinkedIn is primarily a lead and proposal channel. A buyer may find you in the Services Marketplace, search or a recommendation, request proposals from several providers, and then negotiate the agreement with you. Your profile, Service Page, reviews and portfolio establish credibility; your proposal converts that credibility into a commercial decision.

Start with the outcome and scope

A LinkedIn lead cannot evaluate “ten hours of work” as easily as a finished result. Define what will exist at the end of the engagement and how the client will confirm completion. A clear scope also protects you when a buyer asks for work that was never included.

Write a deliverable statement

Describe the output in observable terms. For example: “A revised executive profile, a keyword map for three target roles, and a 30-minute handover call.” Avoid “improve your profile” or “provide marketing support”; those phrases leave the buyer unsure what is being purchased.

Record the assumptions

List the facts your price depends on: the number of pages, products, interviews, data sources, stakeholders, languages, platforms or meetings. State whether the client supplies brand assets, account access, source files, approvals and factual information. If an assumption changes, your change-control clause should allow the fee or schedule to change.

Set a completion test

Explain how acceptance works. A completion test might be delivery of specified files in an agreed format, implementation of an agreed number of edits, or a review call at which the client confirms that the listed deliverables are complete. This is safer than promising an outcome you cannot control, such as a guaranteed job offer or a guaranteed increase in impressions.

Define boundaries before quoting

  • State the start date and delivery date, including what happens if required client material is late.
  • Include the number of revision rounds and the response time for each round.
  • List exclusions such as ongoing maintenance, paid media spend, third-party subscriptions, additional languages, extra meetings or implementation outside the agreed platform.
  • Specify the payment schedule: deposit, milestone payments, final balance, invoice due date and any pause in work for overdue invoices.

Choose the pricing structure that matches uncertainty

The right model depends on how clearly the buyer can verify completion, how likely the scope is to change and whether the work repeats. Do not choose a model merely because competitors display it on their profiles.

Model Best fit What the client buys Main risk to control
Hourly or daily Discovery, advisory work and changing requirements Reserved working time, with a stated estimate or cap The buyer fears an open-ended bill; set a ceiling and report usage.
Fixed project Bounded deliverables with a defined acceptance test A specified result by a specified date Uncontrolled revisions or additions can erase your margin.
Retainer Recurring content, support or advisory capacity A monthly scope, response time and access level Unused capacity, priority conflicts and “unlimited” requests.
Paid discovery Projects where the solution is not yet known Research, a plan, requirements and a recommended next phase The client may expect the full implementation for the discovery fee.

When hourly pricing is defensible

Use hourly billing when the client cannot yet define the work, when you are investigating an unfamiliar system, or when decisions made during the engagement will materially alter the effort. Give a written estimate and a not-to-exceed amount. Send a short usage update at an agreed interval so the client can make decisions before the cap is reached.

An hourly quote should still identify the work: “Up to 12 hours for interviews, analysis and a recommendation memo; additional time requires written approval.” That is more credible than “$X per hour, let’s see what happens.”

When fixed pricing is safer

Use a project fee when the client can approve a list of deliverables and you can define acceptance. Your fee covers the value of completing that scope, not the exact minutes spent. You remain responsible for estimating your effort, coordination and risk.

When a retainer creates value

A retainer works when the client needs predictable access over several months. State the monthly deliverables, hours or capacity, communication channel, response window, meeting allowance, rollover policy and notice period. “Unlimited support” is not a scope; replace it with a measurable service level.

Calculate a sustainable internal rate

No universal LinkedIn hourly rate is established by the available authoritative guidance. Build your own floor from costs, realistic utilization and the margin required for risk. The figure you calculate is an internal decision tool; the client-facing quote can be hourly, fixed or monthly.

Use a billable-hours formula

Minimum hourly rate = (desired owner pay + business overhead + tax and reserve allowance) ÷ realistic annual billable hours. Add a risk or profit margin after calculating the floor. “Billable hours” excludes sales, proposals, administration, learning, holidays, sick leave and unpaid revisions.

Illustrative scenario, not a market benchmark: suppose you target $60,000 in owner pay, expect $12,000 in annual overhead and reserve $18,000 for taxes and other obligations. If you can realistically sell 1,000 hours, your floor is ($60,000 + $12,000 + $18,000) ÷ 1,000 = $90 per hour. Adding a 15% risk margin produces $103.50 per hour. Your own figures, tax rules and utilization will differ.

Account for utilization

A new freelancer may have substantial non-billable time for prospecting and portfolio building. A specialist with a full pipeline may sell more of each working week. Recalculate the floor when your workload, costs or desired income changes rather than copying a rate from another profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convert the internal rate into a project fee

Estimate the hours for production, communication, research, project management and likely rework. Multiply by your internal rate, then add a clearly reasoned contingency for uncertainty. For example, 18 estimated hours at an internal rate of $103.50 equals $1,863. Adding 20% for known scope risk gives $2,235.60; you might round that illustrative quote to $2,250. Explain the scope that makes the number valid.

Use packages to make a LinkedIn decision easy

Packages help a buyer compare options quickly, but tiers should change a real variable: scope, speed, access or revision allowance. Three prices for the same work merely create confusion.

Illustrative package Scope difference Timeline Access and revisions Example fee
Foundation One audit, prioritized recommendations and one handover document Standard queue One review call; one revision round $750 in this scenario
Implementation Audit plus rewriting of the agreed assets and an implementation checklist Standard queue Two review calls; two revision rounds $1,500 in this scenario
Priority Implementation package plus stakeholder workshop and expedited delivery Agreed rush window Priority messaging; two revision rounds $2,250 in this scenario

These figures are examples for explaining package logic, not recommended market rates. Replace them with fees derived from your own cost floor and scope estimate. Make one package the recommended choice and explain why it fits the stated objective. Keep a smaller option for budget constraints and an expanded option for buyers who need speed or more access.

Price urgency separately

Expedited delivery displaces other work and increases coordination risk. Quote a rush premium or reduce scope to meet the date; do not silently promise a faster schedule at the standard fee. Name the exact delivery window and the client response time required to preserve it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price access and revisions separately

More meetings, faster response times, additional stakeholders and extra revision rounds consume capacity. Put them in the package description so the buyer can select the level of access instead of negotiating every request after signing.

Adjust the quote for real commercial variables

Pricing guidance used by large freelance marketplaces notes that complex jobs may justify higher rates, simpler jobs may support a lower bid, and long-term stability or urgency can change a quote. Apply those ideas transparently rather than discounting on instinct.

Complexity and specialist risk

Complexity includes ambiguous requirements, regulated information, multiple decision-makers, difficult integrations, technical dependencies and a high cost of error. Add discovery, contingency or a specialist premium when those factors are present. If the uncertainty is too high to estimate honestly, sell a paid discovery phase first.

Long-term stability

A recurring engagement can reduce your selling and onboarding time, but it also reserves capacity. Offer a lower effective rate only when the minimum term, monthly scope and payment reliability compensate for that reservation. A discount without a commitment simply transfers risk to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proof and buyer risk

Relevant case studies, testimonials and measurable outcomes reduce the buyer’s uncertainty. Show what you delivered, for whom, under what constraints and what was measured. Never imply that a client result was caused solely by your work when other factors contributed. If you lack relevant proof, narrow the first engagement to a paid pilot with a modest, verifiable deliverable.

Turn LinkedIn interest into a qualified brief

LinkedIn says a buyer can select a service, choose “Request proposal,” enter project information and submit the request. Matching may send that request to multiple providers. The exact interface and matching availability can change, so treat the labels as current guidance rather than a permanent screen map.

  1. Review the request. Check the objective, deadline, budget signal, decision-maker, required access and any attached material. Identify missing facts before quoting.
  2. Check fit. Compare the request with your Service Page, profile positioning, portfolio and available capacity. Decline work outside your competence instead of forcing a generic package.
  3. Ask focused questions. Request only information that changes scope, risk or schedule. Explain why each answer matters.
  4. Propose the right model. Recommend hourly, fixed, retainer or paid discovery and explain the uncertainty that led to that choice.
  5. Confirm commercial terms. LinkedIn states that clients and providers can message on LinkedIn.com and then finalize the terms of an agreement outside LinkedIn. Use a written contract or statement of work that records the agreed scope, fee, payment schedule and change process.

Buyers are advised to review a provider’s profile, Service Page and reviews before contact. Make those surfaces consistent: the service you advertise, examples you show and package you propose should describe the same capability.

Write a proposal that justifies the rate

A persuasive proposal connects the client’s problem to a defined result and makes the fee auditable. Keep the opening specific to the request instead of repeating your biography.

Recommended proposal order

  1. Restate the objective. Use the buyer’s language and identify the business consequence of solving it.
  2. Recommend a deliverable. Describe the files, sessions, implementation or decision the client will receive.
  3. Explain your method briefly. Show the stages that create the result; do not provide unpaid consulting disguised as a proposal.
  4. List assumptions and client inputs. Include access, source material, reviewers and response deadlines.
  5. State timeline and acceptance. Include milestones, delivery dates and the number of included revision rounds.
  6. Show the fee and payment schedule. Separate the service fee from expenses and state when each payment is due.
  7. Handle changes. Explain that added deliverables, stakeholders, meetings or rounds require written approval and a revised fee or date.
  8. Give a next action. Ask the decision-maker to confirm the selected scope and schedule a short kickoff or discovery call.

Sample rate justification

“The implementation option is $1,500 because it includes the audit, rewriting of the agreed assets, a checklist for handoff, two review calls and two revision rounds. It assumes one decision-maker supplies source material by the kickoff date. Additional assets are quoted separately. A 50% kickoff payment reserves the production slot, with the balance due on delivery.”

This language justifies the fee through scope and risk rather than an unsupported claim that you are “worth” a particular number.

Keep advertising spend separate from service fees

If you promote your service with LinkedIn advertising, treat that spend as a client-acquisition budget, not as part of the delivery fee. LinkedIn says its ads are sold through an auction in which an advertiser’s bid competes with other advertisers. Auction costs can vary with competition, audience and campaign settings.

  • Put the service fee on its own line in the proposal.
  • State whether the client or freelancer owns the advertising account and approves the budget.
  • Require written approval for the maximum ad spend and any change in audience or duration.
  • Do not promise a fixed number of leads or sales solely because an ad budget was approved.
  • Report media spend and your management time separately.

Common pricing failures and fixes

Quoting before discovery

Symptom: You give a number from a one-sentence LinkedIn message and discover hidden stakeholders or missing assets after agreeing. Fix: Ask scope-changing questions or sell a paid discovery phase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making the client buy your uncertainty

Symptom: A fixed fee contains a large unexplained buffer, so the buyer cannot tell what is included. Fix: State assumptions, contingency logic and a change process; use hourly or discovery pricing when uncertainty cannot be bounded.

Offering unlimited revisions

Symptom: The project has no acceptance point. Fix: Include a specific number of rounds, define what counts as a revision and price additional rounds.

Discounting without reducing scope

Symptom: You accept less money but deliver the original workload. Fix: Exchange a lower fee for a smaller deliverable, slower timeline, fewer meetings, a case-study permission or a genuine minimum-term commitment.

Mixing media budget and labor

Symptom: The client cannot see how much goes to advertising and how much pays for your work. Fix: Separate auction-based ad spend, management time and production fees on the proposal and invoice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Promising an outcome you cannot control

Symptom: The proposal guarantees employment, a specific follower count or a sales result dependent on many actors. Fix: Guarantee your process and deliverables, identify the metrics you will report and list the client or market factors that remain outside your control.

A practical decision checklist

  • Can the buyer verify completion from a written deliverable list?
  • Are the assumptions, client inputs, deadline and revision limit visible?
  • Would a scope change be easy to price under the proposed model?
  • Does the fee cover your calculated floor, non-billable time and risk?
  • Are urgency, access, complexity and continuity reflected in the quote?
  • Do your profile, Service Page, reviews and examples support the capability you are selling?
  • Are the service fee, expenses and any LinkedIn advertising budget separated?
  • Does a contract outside LinkedIn record payment timing, acceptance and change control?

Bottom line

Use LinkedIn to create trust and receive qualified requests, then price the engagement like a professional service: define the result, choose a model that fits uncertainty, calculate a sustainable floor, package meaningful scope differences and document the agreement outside LinkedIn. A buyer should be able to see exactly what the fee purchases, what they must provide and what happens when the brief changes.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
