Open the page, post, template, or site in WordPress, select View in the top toolbar, and choose Mobile. WordPress 7.1 also lets you choose Tablet or Mobile and drag the canvas handles to test widths between the presets. Then open the front end separately in a browser—and, when practical, on a real phone—to confirm what visitors see.
Preview a page or post in the Block Editor
- Open the page or post you want to check.
- Select View in the top toolbar.
- Choose Mobile. The editor canvas switches to a phone-sized layout.
- Choose Tablet as well, then drag the canvas resize handle to test an intermediate width between the presets.
- Inspect the entire page: header, navigation, content, images, forms, buttons, and footer. If available, turn on Show template to see the page content together with its template.

Preview a site or template in the Site Editor
- Open Appearance → Editor (the Site Editor) and select the template or site area you need to inspect.
- Select View in the top toolbar.
- Choose Mobile, then check Tablet and at least one intermediate width by dragging the resize handle.
- Review shared elements such as the header, navigation, content area, and footer.
The canvas and editor state remain synchronized as you change width. To inspect the rendered site rather than the editing canvas, select View site.
Check the actual front end
A canvas preview is useful while editing, but it is not a substitute for the rendered page. In the Block Editor, select Preview in new tab. In the Site Editor, select View site. Check the saved or published page in the new browser tab, including menus, pop-ups, embedded media, forms, and any plugin-generated elements.

Test more widths with browser tools
The Mobile, Tablet, and Desktop presets are starting points. A browser’s responsive or device view lets you drag through additional widths and identify breakpoints where text wraps, columns collapse, or controls overlap. WordPress’s WordPress 7.1 testing guidance recommends resizing the browser through desktop, tablet, and mobile widths or using the browser’s device/responsive view, then checking the saved or published page: Help Test WordPress 7.1.
Browser simulation does not establish how every physical device behaves. If the page matters to your business, open the front-end URL on an actual phone or tablet as an additional check. You do not need a particular model; an existing device is sufficient.
Use Responsive styles when a block needs a mobile-specific value
View changes how you look at the canvas. Responsive styles changes supported block settings for a particular viewport. WordPress documentation says Responsive styles requires a block theme and WordPress 7.1 or higher: Responsive styles.

- Open a block’s Settings or Styles panel.
- Enable or select the responsive control when it is available.
- Switch the viewport badge to Tablet or Mobile.
- Change the supported value, such as a spacing or typography setting.
- Return to Default or Desktop and confirm the base style still looks correct.
Only settings that support responsive values appear in the filtered panel. Not every block setting, theme, or third-party editor can have a different value at every viewport. An administrator can disable responsive-style editing; according to the documentation, existing viewport styles continue to display.

Troubleshoot common problems
The Responsive styles option is missing
Confirm that the site uses a block theme and WordPress 7.1 or newer. An administrator may also have disabled responsive-style editing. The View menu remains a preview tool even when viewport-specific editing is unavailable.

The Mobile canvas does not match the live page
Use Preview in new tab or View site and inspect the current saved or published page. Compare that rendered page in a browser and, if possible, on a phone. Differences can come from template output, plugin-generated markup, cached assets, or styles that are not represented in the editor canvas.
Someone suggests wp_is_mobile() for responsive layouts
Do not use it as a viewport-width detector. The WordPress developer reference explains that wp_is_mobile() classifies requests from the browser’s user-agent string, includes tablets in its mobile classification, and is not intended to detect screen width. Test responsive layouts by changing viewport widths instead.

Is there a separate mobile version to edit?
WordPress.com Support says WordPress sites use responsive design and do not have a separate mobile version to edit: Edit the mobile version of a WordPress site. A theme or plugin can add its own mobile-specific controls or behavior, so review those settings when the front end behaves differently from the core editor preview.

- Preview the current work with View → Mobile.
- Check Tablet and drag the canvas through at least one intermediate width.
- Inspect the complete layout, including the template when Show template is available.
- Open Preview in new tab or View site.
- Use browser responsive mode to test additional widths.
- Open the rendered URL on a real phone or tablet when practical.
- Only then apply a mobile-specific value through Responsive styles, if the block, block theme, and WordPress version support it.
