To preview a Fortnite skin before spending V-Bucks, use the web Item Shop to find the listing, then open Fortnite and inspect the item in the in-game Item Shop. Epic identifies the in-game shop as the place to inspect items. For an outfit you already own, use Locker > Character to choose its available styles. Do not rely on an old platform-specific button guide: Epic’s current public instructions do not document one universal preview key or controller sequence.
What “preview” means in Fortnite
Fortnite has two related but different checks. The first is inspecting an item that is still for sale. The second is changing styles on an outfit already in your locker. Treating them as the same process causes most confusion.

The web shop is therefore a convenient catalog and purchase route, not a guaranteed substitute for the game’s inspection view. If your decision depends on how the model, style, or cosmetic combination looks, launch Fortnite and check it there before confirming the purchase.
How to preview an unowned skin from the Item Shop
- Browse the official web Item Shop. Use it to see what is currently available and identify the outfit you are considering. The shop rotates, so an item shown on one visit may not be listed later.
- Note the exact item name and listing. If several variants, bundles, or styles appear, make sure you are opening the particular outfit or offer you intend to inspect. A bundle is not necessarily covered by the same purchase-reversal rules as an individual Item Shop cosmetic.
- Open Fortnite on your gaming platform. The official shop guidance directs players to the in-game Item Shop for inspection. Sign in to the account that would make the purchase; another account’s locker or V-Bucks balance will not answer the question you are trying to resolve.
- Open the Item Shop and locate the same listing. Use the item name, section, and artwork from the web listing to avoid selecting a similarly named cosmetic.
- Open the item’s inspection view. Select the outfit and follow the current on-screen prompt for inspecting the item or viewing an available style. Epic’s public instructions do not establish a single button combination that applies to every platform, input device, or current interface version, so use the label shown in your game rather than an old video’s instructions.
- Examine every available presentation the game offers. Rotate or zoom the character if those controls are shown, switch through any listed styles, and look at the cosmetic in the context provided by the inspection screen. If a style selector is not displayed for an unowned item, do not assume that every style can be previewed or that a separate style is included in the offer.
- Back out without confirming the purchase. Inspecting an item is not the same as buying it. Read the final confirmation screen carefully before selecting the purchase command, especially when the listing is a bundle or a gifted purchase.
The exact labels can change as Fortnite’s interface is updated. The reliable part of the process is the destination: the in-game Item Shop is Epic’s stated inspection venue. The specific key or button should come from the prompt currently visible on your screen.

How to check styles for an outfit you already own
Style selection is a Locker task, not a way to unlock a shop item for free. Epic’s support instructions describe this route:
- Start Fortnite and remain in the lobby.
- Open the Locker tab.
- Choose Character.
- Select the outfit you own.
- Choose one of the styles the outfit makes available, then return to the lobby.
Epic states that “Your avatar will reflect the same cosmetics you selected in the lobby.” That means the lobby is the confirmation point for your selected owned outfit and its cosmetics. If an outfit has no style option in your Locker, the account is not being shown an additional style through this path; do not infer that a hidden style is available merely because another player or an older screenshot shows one.
Owned outfit versus shop item

Why you should not follow a universal “press this button” guide
Fortnite runs on multiple consoles, PC input methods, and interface revisions. Epic’s currently reviewed public shop and support instructions tell players where to inspect an item, but they do not provide a current chart mapping one preview command to every platform. A keyboard key, controller face button, or menu shortcut shown in an older tutorial may therefore be wrong for your setup.
Use the visible prompt in your own game. If the prompt is not visible, move the selection onto the item, open the item’s details, or check the control hints displayed along the bottom or side of the current screen. Do not press a purchase-confirmation control simply to test whether it is also a preview control.

There is historical regulatory material from 2022 discussing ambiguity around Fortnite’s controller interactions for style preview and purchasing. That material explains why old guides may disagree, but it is not a current control guide and should not be used to choose today’s button.
Use a deliberate pre-purchase inspection
A preview is most useful when you decide what you need to verify before the confirmation screen. Run through the following checklist while the item is still unpurchased:
- Identity: Confirm the exact outfit name and whether you are looking at an individual item, a bundle, or another offer with similar artwork.
- Styles: Check whether the inspection view exposes selectable styles and whether the style you want is actually included in the listing.
- Appearance: View the character from the angles and distances the game provides. A thumbnail can hide details that become obvious in the inspection view.
- Account: Make sure you are signed into the account that will receive the cosmetic and spend the V-Bucks.
- Purchase scope: Read the confirmation screen so you know whether you are buying one cosmetic or a larger bundle.
- Timing: If you are undecided, remember that the shop rotates. Waiting may mean the item leaves the shop, and Epic does not promise a specific return date.
This process separates a visual decision from a financial one. You can leave the inspection screen, discuss the purchase, and return later without having consumed a V-Buck merely by viewing the item.

You can browse the web Item Shop and use it to find current offers, but Epic’s official shop page specifically says: “To inspect items, please check the in-game Fortnite Item Shop.” The statement is important because it limits what the web listing should be used for. The website is suitable for checking the catalog and availability; the game is the official place Epic identifies for item inspection.

If the web page shows an outfit that you cannot find in the game, first verify that you are signed into the same Epic account and that the shop has not rotated. If the listing is no longer in the current in-game shop, the web page does not create a way to purchase or inspect an unavailable offer. Epic says support cannot grant items that are not currently in the Item Shop.
What happens if you regret the purchase?
Previewing is safer than relying on a refund. Epic provides limited reversal mechanisms, each with conditions and exclusions. Neither option is a blanket promise that any Fortnite skin can be returned.
Cancel Purchase within 24 hours
For an eligible V-Bucks Item Shop purchase, Epic says Cancel Purchase can be used for up to 24 hours after the purchase if the item has not been used or equipped in any game mode. When the cancellation succeeds, the item is removed and the V-Bucks are returned.

The 24-hour period is a limit, not a trial period. Equipping or using the cosmetic can make the cancellation unavailable, so inspect first and decide before putting the item into a loadout or match.

Return Tickets within 30 days
If Cancel Purchase is unavailable, some items bought within the last 30 days may qualify for a Return Ticket. Epic says each account starts with three tickets, receives one additional ticket every 365 days, and can hold no more than three at a time. The in-game return screen determines whether a particular item is eligible; do not assume that being less than 30 days old is sufficient by itself.

Purchases excluded from these options
Epic’s support article lists categories that are not covered by the cancellation or Return Ticket process. The exclusions include:
- All passes, pass levels, and premium reward tracks.
- Cosmetic bundles.
- Gifted purchases.
- Level Up Quest Packs.
- Save the World loot llamas and Save the World event or weekly items.
- Purchases made on developer-created islands.
Because the exclusions are category-specific and the eligibility screen is account- and item-dependent, check the actual return option in Fortnite rather than planning a purchase around a presumed refund.

Why a skin may disappear from the shop
The Item Shop rotates. An outfit that is visible today can be absent on a later visit, and Epic does not guarantee when a particular item will return. If the item is missing, the practical instruction is to check back rather than ask support to add it; Epic says support cannot grant items that are not currently in the shop.
Battle Pass availability has a qualified exception. Epic says some Battle Pass items released after August 7, 2024 may be offered in the Item Shop at least 18 months after the relevant pass expires. This is a possibility, not a promise: the statement does not guarantee that every such item will return, nor does it provide a fixed return date for a particular outfit.
Troubleshooting preview problems
The web listing exists, but I cannot find the item in Fortnite
- Confirm that the web page and game use the same Epic account.
- Check whether the shop has rotated since you viewed the listing.
- Look for the exact item name and the correct section rather than relying only on the thumbnail.
- If the item is no longer listed, wait for a future rotation; support cannot manually grant an absent shop item.
I cannot find a style selector
- For an unowned outfit, remain in the in-game Item Shop and follow the prompt currently shown for that listing.
- For an owned outfit, leave the shop and use Locker > Character.
- Do not assume that every outfit has alternate styles or that a style shown elsewhere is included in your offer.
An old guide says a button that does nothing
Ignore the old shortcut and use the on-screen prompt in your current interface. Public Epic instructions do not establish one universal control sequence, and controls can vary by platform, input method, and interface revision.
I bought the item and now want to undo it
- Open Fortnite’s purchase or return screen immediately.
- Check whether Cancel Purchase is offered and whether the item remains unused and unequipped.
- If cancellation is unavailable, check whether the item is within the last 30 days and whether the return screen offers a Return Ticket.
- Review the exclusions before spending a ticket. Bundles, gifts, passes, pass levels, premium reward tracks, Level Up Quest Packs, certain Save the World items, and developer-made island purchases are excluded from the stated options.

This sequence gives you the strongest available safeguard: an in-game inspection before spending, followed by awareness of the narrow reversal windows if a qualifying purchase still needs to be undone.
