Start by comparing the table’s effective width with the PDF’s printable width. In wkhtmltopdf, verify the paper size, orientation and left/right margins, then inspect the table and its parent wrappers for fixed widths, unbreakable content or horizontal scrolling. Change one cause at a time and check the resulting PDF with the exact wkhtmltopdf build used in production; no single CSS rule is a universal fix.
First determine what “overflowing” means in your PDF
A table that is cut off at the right edge is primarily a width problem: the table or its contents do not fit the available printable area, or a parent element clips them. A table that moves awkwardly between pages, repeats a header over content or leaves unexpected gaps has a pagination problem. The two can appear together, but they are different symptoms and should be investigated separately.
- Right edge clipped on every page: check page geometry, table width, cell content and ancestor styles.
- Columns fit, but rows or headers break badly: investigate table fragmentation and repeated headers.
- Screen view scrolls horizontally: inspect the scroll wrapper’s print behavior; the PDF renderer does not necessarily handle it like a browser screen.
Before editing CSS, record the command-line options and the installed renderer build. Run wkhtmltopdf --version and note the operating system and whether the build reports patched Qt. Issue reports about table-header overlap and page breaks concern particular builds and environments; they are evidence of possible failure modes, not proof that every build behaves the same way.
Check the printable width before changing the table
The wkhtmltopdf usage manual says the default rendered page size is A4. It documents --page-size, custom --page-width and --page-height, --orientation, --margin-left and --margin-right. The right question is not just how wide the table looks in HTML, but whether it fits inside the page area left after margins are applied.

- Confirm the actual page size and orientation used by the production command.
- Check the left and right margins in that same command or configuration.
- Compare the effective table width—including cell padding and content—with the resulting printable area.
- For diagnosis, try landscape orientation or a wider page. If the clipping disappears, page geometry is a major constraint; decide whether a wider format is acceptable or whether the table must become more compact.
- If the document layout allows it, test smaller margins. Choose values for the document’s needs rather than assuming a particular margin is correct for every PDF.
For example, these are documented options you can evaluate in your existing invocation; replace the input and output paths with yours:
wkhtmltopdf --page-size A4 --orientation Landscape --margin-left 10mm --margin-right 10mm input.html output.pdf
This is a diagnostic example, not a guaranteed prescription. Changing to landscape or reducing margins affects the whole document, and a table that remains wider than the printable area will still need a content or CSS change. For a custom-width output, the manual also documents --page-width and --page-height; select dimensions that match the intended document rather than applying arbitrary values.
Find what makes the table wider than the page
Inspect the table and its ancestors in the HTML and CSS actually passed to wkhtmltopdf. Common contributors worth checking include fixed pixel widths, a parent with a minimum width, widths inherited from a layout container, large cell padding, and long strings or other content that cannot wrap. These are diagnostic targets, not a claim that one particular CSS declaration will fix every document.

- Fixed widths: look for explicit table, column and parent widths that together exceed the printable area.
- Minimum widths: a
min-widthcan prevent the table or a wrapper from shrinking to fit. - Unbreakable content: long identifiers, URLs or strings may force a column wider than expected. Check the real cell values rather than testing only short sample text.
- Cell spacing and padding: many wide columns with generous padding can push the full table beyond the page.
- Parent layout rules: a table can inherit constraints from a containing element even when its own width looks reasonable.
Make a minimal reproduction that retains the table, its relevant parent elements and the styles that affect their widths. Remove unrelated template rules gradually. This makes it easier to distinguish intrinsic content width from a wrapper or page-layout constraint.
Test responsive wrappers in print
If the table sits inside a framework’s horizontally scrolling wrapper, inspect that element as well as the table. An issue commenter reported this print override for a .table-responsive wrapper:
@media print {
.table-responsive {
overflow-x: visible !important;
}
}
This is an individual reported workaround, not an official compatibility guarantee. Use it only after confirming that the wrapper is involved, and compare the PDF before and after. If the wrapper is not responsible, the rule may do nothing or alter layout without fixing the actual width constraint.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Another issue discussion reports a flex container affecting page-break behavior and says changing it to block in print CSS helped in that case. Treat this in the same way: identify the relevant container, test a narrowly scoped print override, and validate the output. Do not apply a broad layout change just because it appeared in someone else’s report.
Separate horizontal clipping from page-break and header defects
A CSS pattern reported in one issue used table { page-break-inside: auto; }, tr { page-break-inside: avoid; page-break-after: auto; } and thead { display: table-header-group; }. The issue author still described unexpected spacing and header-only behavior. That report shows what was tried in that case; it does not establish a reliable fix across wkhtmltopdf builds or documents.
If your table is both clipped and paginated badly, first make the width fit, then investigate fragmentation separately. Check whether rows are being split, whether headers repeat as expected, and whether later-page headers overlap content. Inspect every page transition: fixing the right edge does not prove pagination is correct, and changing page-break rules does not make an oversized table narrower.
Validate the change against the production build
- Reproduce the problem with the deployed wkhtmltopdf binary, operating system, invocation options and input template.
- Keep only the failing table, necessary cell content, relevant parent styles and page settings in a test case.
- Change one variable—geometry, table sizing or wrapper behavior—at a time.
- Generate the PDF again using the same binary and options used in production.
- Inspect all pages, especially the right edge and page transitions, for clipped columns, repeated headers, overlaps and unexpected gaps.
- Keep the smallest change that resolves the observed symptom without introducing a different layout defect.
The project’s support guidance asks issue reporters for a detailed description and a test case containing HTML, CSS and JavaScript. A reduced reproduction with the build context is also the most useful starting point for your own debugging: it narrows the question to a specific renderer, input and set of options.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
The table is still cut off after changing margins
Recheck the effective table and parent widths, including fixed or minimum widths and wide cell contents. A smaller margin increases available space but cannot guarantee that a wider table will fit.
Landscape fixes clipping but makes the rest of the document awkward
That result points to page geometry as a meaningful constraint. Decide whether the document can use landscape or custom page dimensions; otherwise, return to the table’s columns, content and spacing and make a targeted layout change.
The wrapper override has no effect
Confirm that the affected element is actually the wrapper and that the print stylesheet reaches the rendered document. If the table remains too wide because of its own content or sizing, changing wrapper overflow will not solve that cause.
The width fits, but headers overlap on later pages
Treat this as a pagination issue, not horizontal overflow. Reproduce it separately and test any page-break or repeated-header rule against the exact build; reported CSS patterns have not been shown to work universally.

Record wkhtmltopdf --version, operating system, patched-Qt status, invocation options and the exact HTML/CSS/JavaScript test case. The repository was archived on January 2, 2023, so identifying the deployed build is particularly important when comparing behavior; the archive date alone does not establish the support status of every package or fork.

When to invest in a renderer-specific workaround
The wkhtmltopdf GitHub repository displays an archive date of January 2, 2023. That maintenance context is a reason to keep a precise reproduction and weigh the cost of a renderer-specific workaround, not a basis for assuming every installed package or fork is unsupported. If a narrowly scoped change works on the exact production build and passes checks across all pages, it may be sufficient. If behavior differs between builds or the workaround creates new pagination problems, preserve the minimal failing example and reassess the renderer choice against your application’s requirements.
