If Windows Update keeps reinstalling a graphics driver that causes crashes, flicker, poor performance or a blank screen, recover the working driver first. In Device Manager, roll back the affected display adapter, restart, and then apply the narrowest update-control available on your edition and device. A pause only delays Windows Update; it does not permanently block the driver.
The durable Microsoft-supported controls are administrative policies: Do not include drivers with Windows Updates for Windows Update management, the MDM setting ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate for managed devices, or a device-installation restriction that targets one adapter by its hardware ID. Each has limits, and drivers bundled with operating-system security or feature updates can still be installed.

Roll back the graphics driver before trying to block it
When the display problem began immediately after a driver update, rollback is the fastest way to restore the previous working version. It changes only the selected device and does not disable Windows Update for the rest of the system.

- Open Device Manager. You can search for “Device Manager” from the Start menu.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected graphics adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver, choose a reason if Windows asks, and confirm.
- Restart the computer when prompted, or restart it yourself after the rollback completes.
The Roll Back Driver button is unavailable when Windows has no earlier driver package to restore through Device Manager. In that case, do not keep clicking the unavailable control: use the manufacturer’s official support page to obtain a compatible driver, as described below.

Rollback requires administrator approval. On a work or school computer, an organization’s policy may prevent the change even when you can open Device Manager; contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
Choose the control that matches your problem
Windows offers several mechanisms that look similar but operate at different levels. Selecting the wrong one either leaves the graphics driver exposed or blocks more updates than intended.

Use Group Policy to exclude drivers from Windows quality updates
On editions that expose the Local Group Policy Editor, an administrator can tell Windows Update not to include driver updates with quality updates. This is the clearest general prevention setting when the problem is a normal graphics-driver update delivered through Windows Update.
Enable the policy
- Sign in with administrative rights.
- Open the Local Group Policy Editor. The editor is not exposed on every Windows edition, so do not assume a Windows Home installation has this interface.
- Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
- Open Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
- Select Enabled, apply the setting, and close the editor.
- Restart Windows before checking for updates again. A restart gives the client an opportunity to reload the computer policy; an organization-managed computer may instead refresh policy on its own schedule.
This setting is computer-wide. It does not provide a list in which you can select only one graphics adapter, and it does not remove a driver that is already installed. Roll back or uninstall the problematic package first, then enable the policy so a subsequent quality-update scan does not simply put it back.
Understand the policy’s exceptions
Microsoft Learn states: “This policy won’t apply to updates to drivers provided with the operating system (which will be packaged within a security or critical update) or to feature updates, where drivers might be dynamically installed to ensure the feature update process can complete.” In practical terms, the policy blocks the ordinary driver-delivery path, not every possible driver installation in Windows.

- A graphics driver included inside an operating-system security or critical update can still arrive.
- During a feature update, Windows may dynamically install a driver needed to complete the upgrade.
- The policy does not undo a driver already present; it governs what Windows Update includes in later quality updates.
If the same faulty driver returns during a feature upgrade, a global quality-update exclusion is not sufficient. Use a device-specific installation restriction where your administrator can identify the adapter, or postpone the feature update while a compatible package is obtained.
Managed computers can use the MDM setting
Organizations that manage Windows through mobile-device management can apply Microsoft’s ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate policy instead of relying on a local Group Policy Editor. The setting serves the same basic purpose: exclude driver updates from Windows quality updates.
This is an administrator-side control. A standard user cannot create an MDM policy locally, and a company may lock the setting so that it cannot be changed from Windows Settings. Ask the IT team to confirm whether the device is enrolled and whether the policy is already assigned; changing local settings may be overwritten at the next management check-in.
Microsoft’s policy documentation covers Windows 10 version 1607 and later and Windows 11, but the visible configuration path depends on the edition, enrollment method and management service. The same exceptions apply: operating-system drivers carried in security or critical updates and drivers dynamically added during feature updates are outside the ordinary quality-update exclusion.
Block one graphics adapter with Device Installation Restrictions
If excluding every driver update is too broad, an administrator can prevent installation for a specified device ID. This approach is useful when a computer has several devices but only one graphics adapter causes trouble.

Identify the adapter’s hardware IDs
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Open the affected adapter’s Properties.
- Select the Details tab.
- Choose Hardware Ids from the property list.
- Record the values shown. Keep the exact characters and punctuation; an ID that is too broad can match more devices than intended.
Configure the restriction
In Group Policy, the relevant controls are under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions. The policy that prevents installation of devices matching specified hardware IDs lets an administrator enter the recorded IDs. Depending on the organization’s design, a similar rule can target device-instance IDs instead.
These policies are advanced controls, not a consumer toggle. Device matching matters: a rule aimed at a parent device, a compatible ID, or a broad hardware family can affect more than the single graphics adapter. Policy precedence also matters. An allow policy, a prohibition policy and an administrator override can interact, and the effective result may differ from what one local setting suggests.
Before applying a restriction, keep a working driver installer from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer. A rule that blocks the device before a compatible package is staged can leave the adapter using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or another fallback with reduced resolution and acceleration.
Why pausing Windows Update is not a permanent fix
Windows Settings can pause updates, which is useful while you roll back a driver, obtain a replacement package or wait for an administrator to change policy. The pause postpones update checks and downloads only for its allowed period. When the pause ends, Windows Update checks again and may reinstall the same graphics driver.
Do not describe a pause as a driver block. It also delays unrelated quality and security updates, so leaving it in place longer than necessary increases maintenance risk. Resume updates after the immediate recovery work is complete, then use an appropriate policy if the driver must be excluded on an ongoing basis.

Install a replacement driver from an official source
If rollback is unavailable, the display remains unusable, or the restored package is too old for your software, download a compatible driver from the official support site for the computer maker or graphics-card maker. Microsoft Support explicitly advises: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” Unofficial driver-download sites can provide an incorrect model, an altered installer or a package that lacks the device maker’s required components.
Prepare before installing
- Record the exact adapter name from Device Manager, including whether the computer has integrated and discrete graphics.
- Check the Windows edition and system architecture shown in Settings > System > About.
- Use the manufacturer’s support page for that exact computer or card model, not a similarly named product.
- Read the package’s supported Windows versions and release notes. A package for a different model can install incompletely or fail to start.
Install and verify
- Download the manufacturer’s signed driver package and save it locally.
- Close graphics-intensive applications.
- Run the installer with administrator approval and choose the manufacturer’s recommended installation option.
- Restart when requested, even if the screen appears to recover without a restart.
- Open Device Manager, inspect the adapter’s Driver tab, and confirm that the expected provider, date and version are present.
- Test the operation that previously failed: waking from sleep, changing resolution, launching a game or connecting an external display.
Installing a manufacturer package does not by itself stop Windows Update from offering a later driver. Pair the working package with the Group Policy, MDM or device-specific control appropriate to the computer.
Edition, administrator and Windows-version limits
Windows edition
Microsoft documents the driver-exclusion policy for Windows 10 version 1607 and later and Windows 11, but policy interfaces vary by edition. Windows Pro, Enterprise and Education commonly provide more management controls than Windows Home. If the Local Group Policy Editor is missing, do not download an unofficial replacement or assume a registry edit is equivalent to Microsoft’s documented policy; use Windows Settings for temporary pausing, install the correct manufacturer driver, or ask an administrator to manage the device.
Organization management
A workplace or school may enforce Windows Update, MDM or Device Installation policies centrally. Local changes can be blocked or reversed at the next policy refresh. IT staff may also need to approve a driver for compliance, endpoint security or application compatibility reasons.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Free software updates, technical assistance and security fixes are no longer provided through Windows Update for that operating system. A driver-control policy can still explain current behavior on an existing installation, but it is not a substitute for moving to a supported Windows release or following an organization’s migration plan.
Troubleshoot the common failure cases
Roll Back Driver is greyed out
Windows has no previous driver package available through that control. Obtain the exact compatible package from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer, install it, and then apply a prevention policy if your edition and permissions support one.
The screen is black after the update
Try the rollback from Device Manager if you can reach Windows through another display, Safe Mode or remote administration permitted by your organization. If you cannot operate the graphical interface, use the manufacturer’s recovery instructions or contact the administrator; do not install a random package simply because its name resembles the adapter.
The driver returns despite “Do not include drivers with Windows Updates”
Check whether the returning package arrived inside a security or critical update, or during a feature update. Those are documented exceptions. Also verify that the policy is applied to the computer, not only configured in an editor on a different machine, and that an organization’s policy has not replaced it.

A device-installation restriction based on the adapter’s hardware or device-instance ID is more precise than excluding all driver updates. Have an administrator validate the ID and policy precedence before enabling it.
You have no administrator access
You can report the exact adapter name, current driver version and date, and the time the problem began, but rollback and policy changes may require elevation. On a managed device, send those details to IT rather than attempting to defeat the organization’s controls.
You need an urgent security update
Do not disable Windows Update altogether. Broadly turning off updates can defer security fixes and still may not prevent a driver delivered through an operating-system update. Use the narrowest available driver control and keep the system on a supported Windows version.
