The safest way to prevent a secret from reaching GitHub is to avoid putting it in source code, keep real credentials in a local environment or approved secret manager, ignore secret-bearing files before Git tracks them, inspect every staged change, and enforce scanning on the remote or in CI. Local hooks add useful early warnings, but developers can bypass them. If a real credential reaches a commit or remote, assume it is exposed: rotate or revoke it and remove it from every affected commit.
Build prevention in layers
No single Git setting recognizes every password, API key, private key, or connection string. A dependable setup uses several controls, each operating at a different point in the path from a developer’s workstation to GitHub:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Code and configuration design: application code reads credentials from environment variables, a local configuration file, or a managed secret store instead of embedding values.
- Ignore rules: files containing local values are excluded from accidental staging before Git begins tracking them.
- Review: developers inspect status and the staged diff before creating a commit.
- Local detection: pre-commit or pre-push scanners provide fast feedback on a workstation.
- Shared enforcement: a remote Git server, CI system, or GitHub push protection checks what the team is actually receiving.
- Response: a detected credential is rotated or revoked and removed from all commits where it appears.
These layers solve different problems. An ignore rule can stop an untracked .env file from being added, but it cannot remove a file that is already tracked. A local hook can catch a mistake, but a user can skip it. A server-side check is harder to bypass, yet its detection depends on supported patterns and repository eligibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep usable credentials out of the repository
Start with the design decision that reduces the largest class of leaks: do not store working credentials in source files, test fixtures, documentation, example commands, or committed configuration. The program should obtain a value at runtime from a source appropriate to its environment.

Local development
For a local application, use environment variables or a developer-only configuration file outside version control. A file such as .env can contain a real local value while the application loads the variable by name. The repository should contain only the variable names and safe instructions for supplying them.
Shared and production environments
For CI, staging, and production, use the platform’s encrypted secret store or another approved secret-management mechanism. Keep the application interface stable—for example, read PAYMENTS_API_KEY at runtime—while changing where the deployment system supplies that value. This prevents a credential from being copied into a build script merely because a deployment needs it.
What belongs in an example file
When collaborators need a template, commit a file such as .env.example containing names and clearly fake values:
DATABASE_URL=postgres://user:replace-me@localhost:5432/app
PAYMENTS_API_KEY=replace-with-a-local-key
SESSION_SECRET=generate-a-random-development-value
Use wording that makes substitution unmistakable. Never put a real development, staging, or production credential in the example just because it has limited permissions.
Configure .gitignore before Git sees the file
Git’s ignore rules apply to files that are intentionally untracked. They do not affect a file that is already tracked. Add rules before creating or staging local secret-bearing files, then verify the result.
A practical baseline
Project-specific rules are preferable to a blanket rule that might hide a file a teammate intended to commit. A typical baseline can include:
# Local environment values
.env
.env.*
!.env.example
# Private local configuration
config/local.*
secrets/
# Private keys and certificates generated for development
*.pem
*.key
Adjust the patterns to the project’s actual filenames. If a repository legitimately needs a public certificate or a checked-in configuration file, create a narrow rule rather than ignoring an entire extension or directory. Review ignore changes as code: an overly broad rule can make important files invisible to normal status output.

git check-ignore -v -- .env
The output identifies the matching ignore pattern and its source file. If there is no output, the path is not ignored by the rules currently in effect.
When a file is already tracked
Adding a tracked filename to .gitignore does not remove it from the index. Stop tracking it while retaining the local copy with:
git rm --cached -- .env
Then commit the removal of the file from the repository and confirm that the local file remains on disk. This fixes future tracking, not earlier commits. Any credential that appeared in those commits still needs incident response and history cleanup.
Inspect the exact content that will be committed
Before every commit, check both the file list and the patch. This catches secrets in files that are not covered by your ignore patterns, as well as accidental additions made with an explicit git add -f.
- Review status:
git status --shortLook for unexpected configuration files, generated output, key files, and changes outside the task.
- Inspect staged content:
git diff --cached --Search the patch for key names, passwords, bearer tokens, private-key headers, database URLs, and other sensitive material.
- Inspect a particular path:
git diff --cached -- path/to/fileUse this when a large change makes the complete staged diff difficult to review.
- Unstage anything suspicious:
git restore --staged -- path/to/fileRemoving a path from the index does not delete your working copy, so you can move its values into a local-only file.
An ignored file not appearing in git status is not proof that it has never been tracked. Check the index and history when a secret-bearing path has existed in the project before.
Use local hooks for fast feedback, not as the team boundary
A pre-commit scanner can examine staged text and stop a commit before it is created. A pre-push scanner can inspect the commits that are about to leave the workstation. These checks shorten the feedback loop and are valuable on every developer machine.
What local scanning should check
- Provider-specific token formats used by the services your project calls.
- Generic high-entropy strings and common credential assignments.
- Private-key blocks, cloud connection strings, and authorization headers.
- New or modified files in the staged set, rather than only the working tree.
Configure the scanner to report the file and line, explain how to replace the value with an environment variable, and allow a documented false-positive review. A detector that produces unexplained noise will be disabled by developers.

Local hooks are configuration on an individual workstation. Git permits a user to bypass them with --no-verify, and a hook may not be installed on a newly cloned repository. Treat hooks as an advisory developer aid, not proof that a push is clean.

Enforce the policy on the remote or in CI
For a team rule to apply consistently, run the decisive check where every contribution must pass: the Git server’s receive process or a required CI check. The Git project’s FAQ states: “The only safe place to make these changes is on the remote repository (i.e., the Git server), usually in the pre-receive hook or in a continuous integration (CI) system.”
A remote check should examine incoming commits, report the affected path and commit, and fail the contribution when a supported secret is detected. Decide how developers request an approved false-positive exception, and record who can approve it. Keep the rule independent of a particular editor or operating system so that contributors receive the same decision.
CI is also useful for scanning branch updates and pull requests, including commits created by automation. A required check improves coverage, but it cannot make an already exposed credential safe; detection and revocation remain separate tasks.
Understand GitHub push protection and its limits
When enabled and available for a repository, GitHub push protection can block a command-line push when it detects a supported secret. It is a strong shared safeguard, but it is not a universal guarantee that no credential can reach a repository.
Pattern coverage is selective
GitHub documents provider-specific, generic, and AI-detected secret patterns. Availability, alerting, and blocking options vary by pattern and repository type. A private token format used only inside your organization may not be recognized, so maintain complementary local and CI scanning for credentials outside the supported set.
Repository and plan eligibility matters
Secret scanning is automatic for public repositories. Private and internal organization repositories have plan and product requirements, and organization owners should verify eligibility for each repository. Public repositories also have user-level push protection enabled by default, but the supported-pattern and scan-size limits still apply.
Operational limits can affect a scan
GitHub documents that a push scan can time out. GitHub will still scan after a protection scan times out, so a push that was not blocked is not evidence that every possible secret pattern was cleared. Public-repository pushes larger than 50 MB are documented as skipped for this protection scan. Keep pushes reasonably sized and retain CI coverage for large or unusual changes.

A repeatable workflow for developers
Use this sequence when starting a project or onboarding a contributor:
- Define the runtime variables. Document names such as
DATABASE_URLandPAYMENTS_API_KEY, where each environment supplies them, and what permissions they require. - Create the example. Commit
.env.examplewith names and fake values. Keep the real.envfile local. - Write ignore rules first. Add the local file and private configuration paths to
.gitignorebefore generating them. - Install the local detector. Make the pre-commit or pre-push setup part of the documented developer bootstrap, and explain how false positives are handled.
- Enable shared checks. Require the CI scan or server-side policy for protected branches, and enable GitHub push protection where the repository is eligible.
- Review every staged patch. Run
git status --shortandgit diff --cached --before committing. - Check the push result. If GitHub blocks the push, remove the secret from all affected commits instead of bypassing the block.
- Revisit the rules as the project changes. Add patterns for new local files, generated configuration, and providers; remove obsolete rules only after confirming that no sensitive file depends on them.
What to do when a secret is found
Once a real credential appears in a commit or reaches a remote, treat it as exposed. A deletion in the newest working copy does not invalidate the credential or erase the earlier commit.
1. Contain the credential
Identify the owner, scope, and affected systems. Rotate the credential when the provider supports rotation; revoke it promptly when rotation is not sufficient or the exposure is active. Update applications and deployment systems to use the replacement, and ensure collaborators stop using the compromised value.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Remove it from the affected commits
If the secret is only in the most recent commit, remove the value from the file, stage the corrected file, and amend that commit:
git add -- path/to/file
git commit --amend --no-edit
Remove the extra leading space before git commit if copying the command; it is shown here only as a separate code line. Confirm the amended patch does not contain the value before pushing.
If the secret appears in earlier commits, rewrite the affected history using GitHub’s documented sensitive-data removal procedure or an approved history-rewriting tool. The goal is to eliminate the value from every affected commit, not merely to add a later deletion commit.
3. Coordinate a shared-history rewrite
Rewriting commits that other people have based work on changes commit identifiers and can disrupt branches, clones, release automation, and open pull requests. Notify contributors, agree on a maintenance window, have them stop using the compromised credential, and provide the exact resynchronization steps after the corrected history is published.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Verify the result
Search the corrected branch and the relevant commit range, rerun the repository’s scanners, and confirm with the credential provider that the old value is invalid. A clean current checkout is not enough if an old ref, tag, branch, fork, cache, or artifact still contains the credential.
Best Value
Which control should you rely on?
| Control | Where it operates | Strength and bypass risk | Coverage | What happens after a leak |
|---|---|---|---|---|
.gitignore |
Developer working tree and index before tracking | Prevents accidental addition of matching untracked files; does not affect tracked files | Only paths and patterns you define | Remove the file from the index, then handle any history and credential exposure separately |
| Staged-diff review | Developer workstation before commit | Human decision; depends on the reviewer noticing the value | Anything visible in the staged patch | Unstage and replace the value before committing |
| Pre-commit or pre-push scanner | Developer workstation | Fast feedback; hooks can be missing or bypassed with --no-verify |
Patterns implemented by the chosen detector | Fix the local change before it leaves the workstation |
| Required CI or server-side check | Remote repository or CI system | Shared enforcement for contributions that must pass the check | Rules and detectors configured by the organization | Block or fail the contribution, then clean the commits and rotate the credential if exposed |
| GitHub push protection | GitHub push processing when enabled and eligible | Strong blocking for supported detections; not every pattern, repository, or push size is covered | GitHub’s supported provider-specific, generic, and AI-detected patterns | Remove the secret from all affected commits; do not bypass a genuine finding |
| Secret-scanning alerts | Repository after content is available to scan | Detective rather than preventive | Patterns and repository features supported by the configuration | Investigate, rotate or revoke, and remove the value from history |
Common mistakes and their fixes
“The file is in .gitignore, so it is safe.”
That is true only for an untracked path matching the rule. If the file was committed earlier, use git rm --cached to stop tracking it and investigate the existing commits.
“I deleted the key and committed the deletion.”
The earlier commit still contains the value, and the provider may still accept it. Rotate or revoke first, then remove the secret from every affected commit.
“Our pre-commit hook passed.”
A hook can be absent, outdated, bypassed, or unable to recognize a private credential format. Keep a remote or CI check as the shared policy boundary.
“Push protection did not block the push.”
Blocking depends on supported patterns, repository eligibility, scan limits, and operational conditions such as timeouts. Continue using local and CI scanning, and investigate any suspected exposure.
“A test credential is harmless.”
A test key can still grant access, incur charges, expose data, or be reused elsewhere. Use a deliberately fake value in examples and tightly scoped, replaceable credentials in local or test environments.
“We can force-push the cleaned branch immediately.”
A history rewrite can strand collaborators and leave copies in other refs or clones. Coordinate the rewrite, communicate the new synchronization procedure, and verify invalidation of the old credential.
Repository maintainer checklist
- Applications read credentials at runtime instead of embedding them in source.
- Real local configuration files are ignored before they are created or staged.
- A safe example file contains names and fake values only.
- Maintainers know which files are tracked and can identify ignore rules with
git check-ignore -v. - Contributors review
git status --shortandgit diff --cached --before commits. - Local pre-commit or pre-push scanning is installed and documented as advisory.
- A required CI or server-side check protects the shared repository.
- GitHub push protection is enabled where the repository and plan support it.
- The team knows the supported-pattern, timeout, and large-push limitations of its GitHub protection.
- An incident plan names who rotates or revokes credentials, who coordinates history rewriting, and how collaborators resynchronize.
- After remediation, the old credential is confirmed invalid and the corrected history is rescanned.
The practical standard
Preventing secret commits is a process, not a single file or checkbox. Keep usable credentials outside Git, ignore local files before tracking, inspect staged content, scan locally for speed, and enforce the final decision on the remote or in CI. Treat every genuine detection as an exposure until the credential is invalidated and the value has been removed from all affected history.
