If the screen changes unexpectedly during a film, game or presentation, review Sleep After, Night Mode and Motion Detector settings. The exact menu names vary by model year, screen size, region and software version, but the checks below cover Samsung’s documented paths for recent Frame televisions.

Set the television correctly before guests arrive
Do this while you still have time to test the room rather than waiting for the first interruption.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Wake the television and select TV mode. Press Power briefly on the remote. This is the documented TV/Art Mode toggle.
- Choose the source your guests will use. Select the correct HDMI input, broadcast channel or streaming app, and start the content.
- Watch for several minutes. Check that the picture stays on the selected source while people move around the room.
- Use a complete shutdown when the room is finished. Press and hold Power if you want the set fully off rather than displaying artwork. A quick press is not the same as a full shutdown.
Keep the remote available during setup. If a guest accidentally presses Power, a short press may return the display to Art Mode; another short press restores TV mode.

Why Art Mode can appear during entertainment
The Frame is designed to show artwork when it is not being used as a conventional television. Samsung’s US support guidance explicitly states that Art Mode cannot be permanently disabled. That means there is no universal “turn Art Mode off forever” switch that will remove the feature from every viewing session.
Instead, Art Mode has automatic behaviors that can make the screen change or go dark. The important controls are:
| Control | What it does | Why it matters for guests |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep After | Turns Art Mode off after a period without detected motion. | A room that appears still can lose the artwork display, and the behavior may be mistaken for a television fault. |
| Night Mode | Responds to ambient light conditions. | Changes in room lighting can alter how Art Mode behaves, especially during an evening event. |
| Motion Detector Sensitivity | Controls how strongly Art Mode responds when motion is detected. | Movement unrelated to viewing can affect the display. |
| Ambient Light Detection, Power Saving Mode, Motion Lighting and Auto Power Off | Additional energy or sensor controls listed for certain model years. | These can change screen behavior independently of the basic Art Mode options. |
Sleep After is an Art Mode timer, not a guarantee that a video source will continue playing. If the problem happens while a source is active, first determine whether the television actually switched to Art Mode or whether it shut down because of a separate power-saving setting.

Review Art Mode settings in SmartThings
Samsung documents SmartThings support for 2018 and later Frame televisions. The app requires a Samsung Account and an internet connection. The labels can differ by software release, but the documented route is:

- Open the SmartThings app and select your Frame TV.
- Open Art Mode.
- Select Settings.
- Review Sleep After, Night Mode and Motion Detector Sensitivity.
- Change the setting that is causing the interruption, then test the television from the viewing area.
For a movie night, the practical approach is to avoid an aggressive motion-based behavior that reacts to people entering and leaving the room. If Night Mode is changing the display as lights are dimmed, test with the room lighting set to the level you expect during the event. If the app does not show one of these controls, that absence may be normal for the model or region rather than evidence that the television is malfunctioning.
Find the corresponding controls on the television
Samsung’s on-screen menus are not identical across all Frame sets. Samsung UK’s instructions updated May 26, 2023 cover procedures for 2017–2023 model years and specifically warn that older models use different steps.
2022 and 2023 models covered by Samsung UK guidance
For the listed 2022 and 2023 models, Samsung directs owners to check the television’s General and Eco settings. Look for:
- Ambient Light Detection
- Power Saving Mode
- Motion Lighting
- Auto Power Off
After reviewing those controls, open the available Art Mode settings and check Sleep After, Night Mode and motion-related options. The names and placement can vary even within a model year, so use the labels shown on your set rather than assuming another Frame’s path will match.

Older models
Earlier Frame televisions may place the same functions in different menus. If a setting is not under General and Eco, open the Art Mode options shown by your television and consult the instructions for that exact model. Do not treat a 2022–2023 menu path as a universal procedure for a 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 or 2021 set.
32-inch Frame models
Samsung UK’s 32-inch guidance says those sets lack motion detection. Their documented controls include Sleep After and Night Mode, but not the motion-detector options available on models with the sensor. If your 32-inch television has no sensitivity control, that is consistent with the published model-specific guidance.
Stop environmental motion from triggering a change
The motion detector does not know whether movement is a viewer, an appliance or something outside the room. Samsung gives examples of a flashing LED, a pet dog and a car moving outside a window. Installation height and lighting can also affect sensor performance.
Check the room for unintended triggers
- Look for status lights that flash toward the screen or sensor.
- Keep pets from repeatedly crossing the sensor’s field during testing.
- Notice whether traffic or other movement is visible through a window.
- Test with the lighting level used for the event; a sensor can behave differently in bright and dim conditions.
- Consider whether the set is mounted unusually high or low compared with the position used when the sensor was configured.
Adjust the documented controls
Use SmartThings or the television’s Art Mode settings to review Motion Detector Sensitivity. If the option exists, choose a less reactive setting and run a timed test while people move normally around the room. If the option does not exist, the model may not include motion detection, as with the 32-inch guidance above, or the control may be exposed only through a different model-specific menu.

Check software and model instructions
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking available software updates when The Frame turns off automatically. Install an update offered for your television, then retest the same source and room conditions. If the menu still differs, use the support instructions for the exact model and region; do not infer that a missing option is a hardware failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Distinguish Art Mode switching from a full shutdown
These symptoms can look similar from across a room, but they have different remedies:
| What you see | Likely area to inspect | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork appears while a program was playing | Power-button use or an Art Mode transition | Press Power briefly to return to TV mode, then verify the source. |
| The screen is completely off | Power was held, or an automatic shutdown/power-saving setting acted | Press Power briefly to wake the set; then review Auto Power Off and other Eco controls. |
| Artwork disappears after the room is quiet | Sleep After | Review the Sleep After interval in Art Mode settings. |
| The behavior changes when lights are dimmed | Night Mode or ambient-light controls | Test with event lighting and adjust the relevant setting. |
| The change coincides with movement near the set or window | Motion Detector Sensitivity or environmental motion | Remove the trigger and test a less sensitive setting if available. |
A complete shutdown is intentional when Power is held. Do not use that long press as a way to “lock” TV mode; it turns the television off.
A guest-ready test that catches most interruptions
- Set the room lighting to the level planned for the gathering.
- Press Power briefly and select the exact HDMI input or app that will be used.
- Start a program and leave it running while people walk through the room, sit down and leave their seats.
- Watch the screen during the same interval in which an earlier interruption occurred.
- If it changes to artwork, return to TV mode and inspect Motion Detector Sensitivity, Night Mode and Sleep After.
- If it goes completely dark, inspect Auto Power Off and the other General/Eco controls documented for your model, then check for a software update.
- Repeat the test after each change. Change one setting at a time so you know which adjustment solved the problem.
- Once the source remains stable, leave the remote where a host can reach it without guests accidentally pressing or holding Power.
What to do when the menus do not match
Menu differences are expected across model years, screen sizes, regions and software versions. Samsung’s UK documentation covers 2017–2023 procedures but still separates older models and gives separate 32-inch instructions. Samsung’s Australian guidance also presents model- and region-dependent options.
Use the model number shown in the television’s support information or on its documentation when searching Samsung’s support pages. Compare the labels on your screen with the model-specific instructions. A control can be unavailable because the hardware lacks the sensor, because the feature is named differently, or because the regional software exposes it elsewhere.
SmartThings is an alternative route only for compatible 2018-and-later Frame televisions with a Samsung Account and internet access. If those requirements are not met, use the television’s own menus instead of treating the app as mandatory.
Quick Recap
Limitations to plan around
- Art Mode cannot be permanently disabled according to Samsung US support.
- A brief Power press is a mode toggle, not a complete power-off command.
- Holding Power turns the television completely off, so it is unsuitable when you want the program to keep playing.
- Motion detection can react to activity that has nothing to do with a guest watching the screen.
- Not every Frame has the same sensor or settings; the 32-inch guidance specifically excludes motion detection.
- Settings, labels and availability can change with model, region and software version.
Final pre-event checklist
- TV mode is active after a brief Power press.
- The intended HDMI input, channel or app is selected and playing.
- Sleep After, Night Mode and motion settings have been reviewed.
- General/Eco controls such as Auto Power Off have been checked where applicable.
- Flashing lights, pets and visible outdoor movement are not triggering the sensor during the test.
- The television has the latest update offered for its model.
- The remote is available, and everyone helping with the event knows that a short Power press changes modes while a long press shuts the set down.
