To keep a 24/7 episode rotation predictable in OBS, put the episode files in a VLC Video source, turn Shuffle Playlist off, and turn Loop Playlist on if you want the sequence to restart after its last episode. Looping repeats the list; it does not prevent episodes from recurring on the next cycle. Audit the list for duplicates and check the last-to-first transition before going live.
Set up a predictable episode rotation in OBS
For a playlist of multiple local files, use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS’s Media Source is intended for a single file; its Loop option repeats that file when playback ends. The VLC Video source supports multiple files and separate controls for looping the playlist and shuffling its order. VLC must be installed for the source to appear. The OBS Project’s media-source documentation, dated January 11, 2022, describes these controls; names or placement may differ in your installed version, so verify them in OBS.

- Install VLC if it is not already installed, then restart OBS if the VLC Video source is not available.
- In OBS, add a source to the scene and choose VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the episode files in the order you want them played. Keep each intended episode to one entry if it should appear only once per pass through the list.
- Turn Shuffle Playlist off for a consistent order. Turn Loop Playlist on if playback should begin again with the first entry after the last one finishes.
- Confirm the saved list and both settings directly; do not rely on defaults. OBS documentation lists loop on and shuffle off as the defaults, but a source may have been configured differently.
- Preview playback and check the transition from the final episode back to the first before starting the stream.
In OBS’s wording, the loop setting “Specifies whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files.” Shuffle determines whether the list is randomized. With shuffle off and loop on, the list plays in its configured order and cycles back to the beginning.

A playlist loop repeats the entire sequence after its final item. It cannot make a finite playlist run forever without revisiting episodes. If the list contains five episodes, for example, each will play again on the next pass unless you change the list or stop playback.

Audit the playlist for unintended repeats
- Look for the same file added more than once, including renamed copies of the same episode.
- Check that each episode appears in the intended position and that no temporary or test file remains in the list.
- Review the last-to-first transition. A transition that feels abrupt can make the cycle more noticeable even when the order is correct.
- If an episode should not recur within a particular programming window, make that window’s playlist long enough and verify its entries; looping a shorter list necessarily brings episodes back.
These checks address duplicates and sequence design. OBS’s loop and shuffle controls do not provide a way to guarantee that an episode never repeats across cycles.
Choose the OBS source that matches the job
| Source | Best for | Repeat behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local media file | Its Loop option repeats that file after playback completes. |
| VLC Video | A sequence of local media files | Loop Playlist restarts the list after its last file; Shuffle Playlist controls whether the order is randomized. VLC must be installed. |
For a multi-episode rotation, use VLC Video rather than adding a single-file Media Source and expecting it to manage a playlist.

Check YouTube’s audience, rights, and stream eligibility
Set the audience accurately
YouTube requires creators to indicate whether videos are made for kids, including livestreams, and says not to rely on automated systems to decide. Set the audience in YouTube Studio based on the content and review it before the stream. YouTube’s made-for-kids rules restrict features that can include live chat, comments, notifications, personalized ads, and saving to playlists. YouTube also notes that made-for-kids videos or channels cannot be added to a playlist from a homepage, while content can still be added from search results. Build and test your workflow without depending on those unavailable features. Confirm rights for every episode and soundtrack
YouTube says livestreams must comply with its Community Guidelines, and its livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for the live content, including applicable music rights. Check rights for each episode and any music embedded in it before scheduling the stream. Playlist presentation must also comply with YouTube’s playlist policies, including the prohibition on playlists that mislead viewers about their contents. Check whether the channel can livestream
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable livestreaming. The guidance describes encoder, webcam, mobile, and console options; it does not require one specific streaming method for this playlist workflow. Confirm current eligibility in YouTube Studio before relying on a scheduled start. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
Understand the monetization risk of repetitive programming
On July 10, 2025, a TeamYouTube response said YouTube clarified its repetitious-content monetization guidance to cover mass-produced or repetitive content, renamed the policy “inauthentic content,” and applies it regardless of how content was made. A livestream that repeatedly plays episodes should not be assumed to qualify for monetization merely because it is live; monetization remains subject to YouTube’s channel and content review. An episode repeats before the list ends

The stream stops when the final file ends
Verify that Loop Playlist is on for the VLC Video source. That setting restarts the source after it runs out of media files; it does not remove the cycle’s repeats.
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC and restart OBS, then check the add-source menu again. The VLC installation is a prerequisite for this OBS source.
A made-for-kids workflow depends on a missing viewer feature
Rework the plan around the restrictions YouTube applies to made-for-kids content. In particular, do not make the stream’s operation depend on chat, comments, notifications, or playlist saving being available.
