If you only need to show one study app, use window or application capture instead of capturing the whole display where your platform and OBS version support it. Before going live, check a private preview or test recording while a notification-producing app is configured as it will be during your session.
Why notifications appear in an OBS stream
OBS Display Capture records the entire monitor. If a banner is drawn over that monitor, it may be included in the captured image. OBS describes Display Capture as a way to capture your entire monitor. The two practical safeguards are to suppress notifications at the operating-system level and, when suitable, capture only the app or window that should appear on stream.
Choose the right safeguard
- Use Do Not Disturb or Focus when you want fewer alerts on your own screen as well as fewer banners in the capture. Review allowed exceptions and automatic rules first; selected apps, people, alarms, reminders, or time-sensitive notifications may still be permitted.
- Use window or application capture when the audience only needs to see a particular study app. This narrows what OBS captures, but also changes what viewers can see. Confirm the selected content remains visible and framed as intended.
- Use both when an alert would be disruptive even if it is not captured, or when you want a second safeguard against a notification appearing on stream.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Silence notifications
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb.
- Review the priority notifications and app-specific notification settings so you know which alerts can still get through.
- Check the automatic Do Not Disturb rules, including rules associated with display duplication or full-screen app use. Do not assume that streaming itself automatically silences notifications.
Starting a Focus session turns on Do Not Disturb by default. If you use Focus, check the captured composition for any timer or Focus interface before streaming.
Limit OBS to the study app
If your scene does not need the full desktop, replace Display Capture with Window Capture and select the study app. OBS Window Capture on Windows can show only the selected window even when other windows overlap it. Check that the selected window is the one you intend viewers to see and that important controls or material are not cropped.
macOS
Set up Focus
- Open Control Centre and turn on Do Not Disturb under Focus.
- Review the active Focus settings for allowed people, apps, and time-sensitive notifications. These allowances can permit notifications during Focus.
Choose an OBS capture source
On macOS 13 and later, use OBS’s macOS Screen Capture source and choose Display Capture, Window Capture, or Application Capture according to what the scene needs. OBS documents a Hide OBS from capture option for macOS Screen Capture when using Display Capture; that hides OBS itself, not notifications generally. The older OBS Window Capture source is deprecated on macOS 13 and newer.

Linux
Notification controls differ by Linux distribution and desktop environment, so there is no single procedure established here. Identify your desktop environment and use its current notification settings to silence or manage banners. OBS documents Linux screen-capture source families, but that alone does not establish whether a particular desktop environment suppresses notifications during capture. Check the behavior of your own setup before streaming rather than assuming a universal rule.
Check the scene before going live
- Set Do Not Disturb or Focus and review its exceptions and automatic rules.
- Confirm the OBS source: use display capture only if the whole desktop belongs in the stream; otherwise select the appropriate window or application source where available.
- Make a private preview or test recording with a notification-producing app configured as it will be during the study session.
- Inspect the recording or preview for banners, permitted alerts, Focus interface elements, and any content hidden by a narrower capture source.
