To stop OBS music from clipping, lower the music at the earliest point you can control, then add OBS’s Limiter as the last filter on that music source. Test a recording of the loudest part of the loop and listen back before going live. A higher YouTube audio bitrate will not fix a signal that is already clipping.
Find where the distortion starts
Trace the audio from playback to OBS rather than turning down an arbitrary slider. If the videos play in a browser or media player, reduce that application’s volume first and check the operating system’s volume mixer. If OBS captures all computer audio, lower desktop output or the desktop audio source. If the video comes through an OBS Media Source or another individual source, adjust that source’s volume.

Listen before OBS and again to OBS’s monitored audio or a local recording. If it is already distorted before it reaches OBS, lowering a later fader can make the meter look safer but will not undo the distortion. Do not add OBS gain to compensate for a source that is already too hot.
Set a safe level with the OBS mixer
Check the loudest part, not just the intro
Play a loud passage and watch the music source’s peak meter and peak-hold indicator. OBS’s current Mixer Guide says the peak-hold indicator retains the loudest meter value for 20 seconds and recommends keeping background music in the green area. Meter colors are a practical guide, not a universal loudness target.

Digital audio must stay below 0 dBFS in the final stream or recording to avoid clipping. OBS’s technical guidance gives -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level, allowing margin for meter and alignment uncertainty. Treat those as OBS meter conventions and conservative headroom guidance, not as a required integrated loudness or LUFS target for your music.
If the meter hits red or reaches the ceiling, lower the application, source, or fader before adding output gain or relying on compression. OBS notes that its input-level indicators are positioned before the volume fader but behind source filters, so a meter reading reflects its place in the signal chain.

Add a limiter as the final safety ceiling
- In OBS, open the music source’s Filters.
- Add the Limiter filter.
- Move it to the end of the source’s filter chain, after any compressor or other processing that could raise the level.
- Start with OBS’s documented default threshold of -6.00 dB, then listen to the result. This is a default, not a mandatory setting for every source.
A limiter catches peaks that would otherwise rise above its threshold; it cannot repair clipping already present in a video file, browser output, system audio, or earlier hardware stage. If the limiter is working constantly or the sound pumps or distorts, reduce the input level rather than asking the limiter to do all the work.
Use compression only when you need it
A compressor reduces louder portions and can make changing levels more even. OBS describes it as typically placed at or near the start of a filter chain. For music playing under a host, its sidechain or ducking mode can use microphone audio to lower desktop audio while the host speaks. An unattended music loop does not need ducking unless you have another reason to use it.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Compression is not a hard ceiling. If you apply output gain after compression, peaks can rise again, so keep the Limiter last in the chain.
Record a representative test before going live
- Run the same loop and audio route you plan to use on stream.
- Record a test that includes loud passages, transitions between videos, and the loop restarting.
- Listen to the recording, including its beginning and loudest sections; do not rely on meters alone.
- If you rehearse on YouTube, check stream health while it is live and make sure the test includes audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast.
OBS recommends testing and listening to a normal recording before a first stream. YouTube likewise advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event.

Do not confuse bitrate with clipping
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo in advanced settings, along with a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Those are encoder settings; changing bitrate does not reduce the music source’s peak level or cure clipping.
The cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not set an integrated LUFS target specifically for OBS music playback into YouTube Live. Do not treat a commonly repeated LUFS figure as a clipping requirement for this setup.

Troubleshooting common clipping symptoms
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Audio sounds distorted before OBS, even when the OBS meter is turned down | Clipping or distortion is already present in the file, app, system output, or an earlier stage. | Lower the earliest controllable playback level or use a clean source file. A later fader or limiter cannot restore audio already distorted upstream. |
| The OBS peak meter reaches red or the ceiling | The source level is too high at or before the meter’s position in the chain. | Lower the application, desktop output, or individual source. Recheck the loudest passage. |
| The meter looks safe, but the recording sounds bad | A meter does not reveal every fault, including distortion introduced upstream or poor-sounding limiter action. | Listen to a recording of the actual loop. Reduce input level and review the filters if the limiter is working constantly. |
| The meter is smaller after turning down a fader, but distortion remains | The signal may have clipped before that fader. | Move the level reduction earlier in the chain and compare playback before OBS with a new recording. |
| The sound pumps or becomes harsh after processing | The limiter may be catching too much, or compression and later gain may be working against each other. | Reduce the source level, keep the limiter last, and use compression only to solve a specific dynamic or ducking need. |
| The audio is clean locally but YouTube reports stream problems | Local audio quality and stream health are separate checks. | Review YouTube’s live stream health during a representative rehearsal; do not assume a bitrate change will fix source clipping. |
Keep music rights separate from audio settings
Clean audio does not establish permission to broadcast a music video. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream to avoid issues such as copyright strikes. A video being publicly playable or loopable does not by itself grant live-stream rights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and is for YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps, streamed as uploaded without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
