How to Prevent Mosquito Bites: Repellents, Clothing, and Bed Nets

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

The most reliable way to prevent mosquito bites is to layer protection: use an EPA-registered skin repellent exactly as its label directs, cover skin with loose-fitting long sleeves and pants, add 0.5% permethrin-treated clothing or gear when suitable, and sleep under a properly fitted mosquito net when screens are unavailable or you are outdoors. At home, maintain screens, use air conditioning when available, and remove standing water every week. No single product covers every exposure, so match each layer to where and when mosquitoes can reach you.

This guidance is based primarily on U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. Product labels and public-health advice can change, so check the current label for the product you use.

Choose an EPA-registered repellent for exposed skin

For skin that cannot be covered, CDC recommends an EPA-registered repellent containing one of these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. EPA registration means the product has been evaluated for effectiveness. CDC says registered repellents are proven safe and effective when used as directed, including for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Look for the EPA registration number on the package and follow that product’s directions rather than assuming that all products with the same ingredient work for the same length of time. See CDC’s mosquito-bite prevention guidance.

Active ingredient What to know
DEET CDC-recommended active ingredient in EPA-registered repellents; use and reapply according to the specific label.
Picaridin Also called KBR 3023 or icaridin outside the United States; follow the product label.
IR3535 Use an EPA-registered formulation and follow its application and reapplication directions.
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) Use only a labeled repellent product; CDC advises against OLE products for children younger than 3 years.
Para-menthane-diol (PMD) Use only a labeled repellent product; CDC advises against PMD products for children younger than 3 years.
2-undecanone CDC lists this as an option when present in an EPA-registered repellent.

The active ingredient alone does not tell you how long a product will protect you. The label’s concentration, application method, permitted age range and reapplication interval control how that particular product should be used. If the label says to reapply after a specified period or after particular activities, follow it.

Apply repellent in the right order

  1. Read the complete label, including age restrictions, warnings and reapplication instructions.
  2. Apply repellent only to exposed skin. Do not put it under clothing.
  3. If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and repellent second.
  4. Keep repellent away from eyes, mouth, cuts and irritated skin. Wash treated skin after coming indoors when the label advises or when protection is no longer needed.
  5. Reapply only as the label directs; more frequent application is not automatically better.

Use extra care with children

Follow the product label for a child’s age and application. Do not use OLE- or PMD-containing products on children under 3 years old. Do not put repellent on a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts or irritated skin. To protect a child’s face, an adult should first put the product on their own hands and then spread it on the child’s face, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Cover a stroller or baby carrier with mosquito netting rather than applying repellent to a baby’s hands or face. The CDC’s child-safety instructions provide the age and placement precautions.

Why an unregistered natural product is not an equivalent substitute

CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some products marketed as natural, is not known. A plant-derived ingredient in an EPA-registered repellent is not the same evidence as an unregistered essential-oil product. Check the registration and the directions on the finished product you plan to use instead of judging it by the word natural.

Use clothing as a physical barrier

Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when mosquitoes are active. Loose clothing leaves less skin exposed and is less likely to press against the skin. Tuck or adjust garments where practical so mosquitoes cannot easily reach gaps at wrists, ankles or waist; the key CDC recommendation is covering skin with loose-fitting garments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add permethrin-treated clothing and gear

Permethrin is an insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes. You can buy clothing and gear pretreated with permethrin or treat suitable items yourself with a product labeled for that use. CDC identifies boots, shirts, pants, socks, tents and backpacks as examples. Clothing and gear treatment uses 0.5% permethrin. Follow the treatment product’s label for which materials can be treated, how to apply it, drying and storage requirements, and how long the treatment lasts. CDC notes that treated items continue providing protection after multiple washings, but the label determines the expected duration and any retreatment instructions. Read CDC’s permethrin-treated clothing and gear guidance.

Never apply a permethrin product directly to skin. It is for clothing and gear when the label permits, while an EPA-registered skin repellent is the separate layer for exposed skin. Do not assume that treating every fabric, sleeping surface or household item is allowed; use only the items and method named on the product label.

Sleep under a mosquito net when screens are unavailable

Use a mosquito net when sleeping outdoors or when a room does not have reliable screens. CDC also recommends buying a net before overseas travel when your sleeping accommodation may not be screened. A net is especially important when you cannot keep mosquitoes out of the room or when you will be sleeping in an open-sided shelter.

Select a net that can protect the whole sleeping area

CDC’s selection guidance is a compact, white, rectangular net with 156 holes per square inch and enough length to tuck securely under the mattress. A net that is too short, leaves openings at the sides or cannot be suspended over the bed can create gaps mosquitoes use. CDC says permethrin-treated nets provide more protection than untreated nets; follow the net’s label to determine whether it can be washed and how to care for the treatment. See CDC’s mosquito-net guidance.

Set up and use the net correctly

  1. Inspect the net for holes, torn seams and missing attachment points before you rely on it.
  2. Suspend it so the fabric surrounds the entire sleeping space and the bottom reaches far enough to tuck under the mattress or sleeping mat.
  3. Tuck the lower edge under the mattress or mat all the way around, closing gaps.
  4. Enter and exit promptly, keeping the opening closed whenever you are not getting in or out.
  5. Do not sleep directly against the net. CDC warns that mosquitoes may bite through the holes if your skin is pressed against the fabric.
  6. Follow the care label, especially for a treated net, because washing instructions affect the treatment.

Keep mosquitoes out of the home

Block entry through doors and windows

  • Install screens on doors and windows.
  • Repair holes and gaps in existing screens.
  • Use air conditioning if it is available; keeping doors and windows closed reduces opportunities for mosquitoes to enter.

These measures protect everyone in the room and reduce the need to rely only on topical products. Inspect screens after storms, moves or other events that could create tears.

Remove breeding sites every week

Mosquitoes can lay eggs in small amounts of standing water. Once a week, inspect indoor and outdoor containers and empty and scrub them, turn them over, cover them or discard them, as appropriate. CDC examples include tires, buckets, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers and trash containers. Emptying alone may leave eggs or residue, so scrubbing is part of the recommended routine for containers that will be reused. Repeat the inspection after rain and keep containers from collecting water again.

Match the protection layer to your exposure

Situation Primary layer Useful additions Critical check
Walking, gardening or sitting outdoors EPA-registered repellent on exposed skin Loose long sleeves and pants; permethrin-treated clothing or gear when labeled for the item Keep repellent off skin under clothing and reapply only as directed.
Hiking, camping or traveling with exposed gear Covering clothing plus labeled permethrin treatment for suitable clothing and gear EPA-registered repellent on skin that remains exposed Confirm the treatment is 0.5% permethrin and check the treatment label for duration and washing.
Sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened room Properly installed mosquito net Covering sleepwear and repellent on exposed skin before bed when the label permits Tuck the net under the mattress and avoid contact with the fabric.
At home with recurring mosquitoes Window and door screens, repaired as needed Air conditioning and weekly standing-water removal Inspect both indoor and outdoor containers, including small items such as saucers and toys.
Infant or young child in a stroller or carrier Mosquito netting over the stroller or carrier Age-appropriate labeled repellent on permitted exposed skin and covering clothing Never apply repellent to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts or irritated skin.

Compare each option by its role

Topical repellent is the flexible layer for uncovered hands, necks, ankles and other exposed areas, but it depends on correct application and label-timed reapplication. Covering clothing is a passive barrier that works wherever the fabric stays in place. Permethrin adds insecticidal protection to labeled clothing and equipment, including boots, socks, tents and backpacks; it does not replace repellent on uncovered skin. A net protects a whole sleeping space, provided it is intact, enclosed and tucked. Screens, air conditioning and water control reduce exposure for everyone at home rather than only the person wearing repellent.

There is no universally best brand or single ingredient for every person and setting. Compare the finished product’s EPA registration, active ingredient, permitted age range, application method and label-stated reapplication directions. For treated clothing, compare whether the item is pretreated or suitable for home treatment, whether the product specifies 0.5% permethrin, and how the label describes washing and duration. For nets, compare compactness for travel, rectangular coverage, 156 holes per square inch, suspension points, tuck-in length and whether the net is treated.

Plan a layered routine before travel or outdoor activity

  1. Assess the setting: Decide whether you will have screened or air-conditioned rooms, exposed outdoor time, an open-sided shelter or an unscreened sleeping area.
  2. Pack the matching layers: Bring an EPA-registered repellent, loose covering clothing, labeled treated gear when appropriate, and a net if reliable screens are not guaranteed.
  3. Check every label before departure: Confirm age limits, permitted surfaces, application steps, reapplication timing, washing instructions and treatment duration.
  4. Inspect equipment: Look for holes in netting, damaged seams, missing suspension points and worn treated clothing. Repair or replace items before exposure.
  5. Use the layers together: Apply sunscreen first and repellent second, keep repellent off covered skin, and use the net whenever sleeping conditions are unscreened.

Layering also prevents a common false choice between products. Clothing and nets reduce the skin area that needs repellent; repellent covers the small areas clothing cannot; and home controls reduce the number of mosquitoes reaching the room in the first place.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Applying repellent under clothing

Repellent is intended for exposed skin. Applying it under clothing does not follow CDC’s instruction and can increase unnecessary skin contact. Cover the area with clothing instead, and apply repellent only where skin remains exposed.

Putting permethrin on skin

Permethrin clothing treatment and skin repellent are different products for different surfaces. Use permethrin only on clothing or gear that the treatment label allows; choose an EPA-registered skin repellent for exposed skin.

Assuming a plant-based oil has proven protection

Registration, formulation and label directions matter. CDC does not establish the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, even when they are marketed as natural. Choose a registered product if you need the protection covered by CDC’s recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using sunscreen after repellent

When both are needed, put sunscreen on first and repellent on second. Reapply each according to its own label rather than mixing products together.

Leaving gaps around a bed net

A net that is not tucked, has holes or presses against your skin cannot provide the intended barrier. Repair or replace damaged netting, close the opening and keep your body from touching the fabric while sleeping.

Forgetting small water containers

Large pools are not the only concern. Tires, buckets, toys, flowerpot saucers, birdbaths and trash containers can all hold water. Add these items to a weekly inspection and empty, scrub, turn over, cover or discard them as appropriate.

A practical prevention routine

  1. Before going outside: Choose clothing that covers arms and legs, inspect any treated gear and read the skin-repellent label.
  2. Apply skin protection: Put sunscreen on first if needed, then apply the EPA-registered repellent only to exposed skin.
  3. During exposure: Keep sleeves, pant legs and gear positioned as intended. Reapply repellent only at the label’s interval and after any label-specified activity.
  4. Before sleeping: If the room is unscreened or you are outdoors, inspect, suspend and tuck the mosquito net. Do not let your skin rest against it.
  5. Each week at home: Repair screen damage and inspect every water-holding container indoors and outdoors. Empty and scrub, turn over, cover or discard the container as appropriate.
  6. For children: Check the age range first, keep repellent away from hands and the face’s openings, and use netting over strollers and carriers.

Layering works because each measure addresses a different route of exposure: repellent protects exposed skin, clothing blocks access, permethrin adds treated-surface protection, a net shields an entire sleeping space, and screens plus water control reduce mosquitoes around the home. Use the current label and the setting-specific layer rather than treating any one option as universal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mosquito repellent?

There is no single best brand for every situation. Choose an EPA-registered product containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol or 2-undecanone, then follow that product’s label for application and reapplication. The label’s concentration, age range and directions matter more than assuming all products with one ingredient last the same length of time.

What should I wear to avoid mosquito bites?

Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Covering clothing is a physical barrier; adjust or tuck garments where practical so mosquitoes cannot easily reach wrists, ankles or the waist. For additional protection, use clothing or gear treated with 0.5% permethrin only as the treatment label allows.

Does permethrin go on skin or clothes?

Permethrin products intended for mosquito protection go on labeled clothing and gear, not directly on skin. CDC examples include boots, shirts, pants, socks, tents and backpacks. Use an EPA-registered skin repellent separately on exposed skin, and follow the treatment label for drying, washing and duration.

When should I sleep under a mosquito net?

Use a net when sleeping outdoors or whenever a room lacks reliable screens, including during travel when screened accommodation is uncertain. Choose a compact white rectangular net with 156 holes per square inch, suspend it around the entire sleeping space, tuck it under the mattress and avoid pressing your skin against it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are mosquito repellents safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

CDC says EPA-registered repellents are proven safe and effective when used as directed, including for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Read and follow the current product label, apply only to exposed skin and use the same sunscreen-first, repellent-second order.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Can I use oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD on a young child?

No. CDC advises not using products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol on children under 3 years old. For any child, follow the label, keep repellent off hands, eyes, mouth, cuts and irritated skin, and have an adult apply product to the child’s face from their own hands.

Are natural essential-oil repellents proven to work?

CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some marketed as natural, is not known. A plant-derived ingredient in an EPA-registered finished product is not equivalent to an unregistered essential-oil product. Check for EPA registration and follow the finished product’s label.

How do I protect a baby in a stroller or carrier?

Cover the stroller or baby carrier with mosquito netting. Do not apply repellent to a baby’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts or irritated skin. If a labeled product is permitted for the child’s age, an adult should put it on their own hands before applying it carefully to allowed exposed areas.

How often should I remove standing water?

Inspect indoor and outdoor water-holding containers at least weekly and after rain. Empty and scrub reusable containers, turn items over, cover them or discard them as appropriate. Check tires, buckets, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers and trash containers, not only large pools.

Do treated mosquito nets provide more protection than untreated nets?

CDC says permethrin-treated nets provide more protection than untreated nets. Follow the net’s care label to learn whether it can be washed and how washing affects the treatment. Any net still needs to be intact, fully enclosed and tucked so mosquitoes cannot enter.

The Bottom Line

Prevent bites by combining layers: an EPA-registered repellent on exposed skin, loose covering clothing, labeled 0.5% permethrin-treated gear when appropriate, and a properly tucked mosquito net for unscreened sleeping. Maintain screens or air conditioning at home and remove standing water weekly. Always follow the current label, especially for children and treated fabrics.
