To prevent mold during rainy weather, keep water out, control indoor humidity, vent household moisture outdoors, and dry leaks or spills promptly. A musty odor is a cue to look for dampness or hidden water damage—not a problem to solve with air freshener.
Why rain can lead to mold and musty odors
Mold spores are present indoors and outdoors; they can grow when they land on a wet surface. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts the principle simply: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” Removing every spore is not practical, so focus on preventing and correcting dampness.

A musty smell can point to moisture you cannot see, such as a leak behind a wall, a damp basement, or wet items in storage. Find and fix the source rather than masking the odor. EPA explains why mold grows in a home and notes that unresolved moisture makes recurrence likely.
Check for water entry after heavy rain
Inspect ceilings, window frames, exterior walls, under sinks, basements, and stored belongings after a downpour. Look for water stains, visible growth, condensation, or materials that feel damp. Check the roof, gutters, windows, plumbing, and drainage around the foundation; EPA recommends maintaining gutters and making sure the ground slopes away from the building.
#1 Best Overall
- BRIGHTER RESULTS INSTANTLY: Noticeably brightens indoor and outdoor surfaces, removing black mold and mildew stains as you watch, with no scrubbing or pressure washing required for fast, visible results
- NO SCRUBBING REQUIRED: Avoid the hassle and backbreaking work of scrubbing tough stains; the PRO formula lifts mold and mildew stains on contact so you simply apply, watch and rinse where needed
- 2X STRONGER FORMULA: The PRO formula is 2X stronger than the standard 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner, made for your toughest black mold and mildew stains and messes on both indoor and outdoor surfaces
- OUTDOOR AND INDOOR USE: Use on siding, fences, decks, concrete floors, brick walls, drywall, wood, kitchen surfaces, bathroom tile and grout, bathtub soap scum and showers where mold and mildew can grow
- REMOVES BLACK MOLD STAINS & MORE: Targets stubborn black mold and mildew stains on a wide range of surfaces, giving a brighter, cleaner result indoors and outdoors without scrubbing or pressure washing
If you find a leak or standing water, stop the water source if it is safe to do so, remove standing water safely, and dry affected surfaces and belongings promptly. For significant damage, document it and contact the property owner, insurer, or a qualified repair professional as appropriate. Cleaning visible mold without fixing the underlying leak leaves the conditions for it to return.
Keep indoor humidity under control
EPA’s 2014 homeowner guide recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A small humidity meter, also called a hygrometer, can help you check conditions in rooms that tend to feel damp. The guide’s $10–$50 price description is historical, not a current retail quote.

- Eliminates & Helps Prevent Mold: Targets existing mold at the source and leaves behind an invisible barrier that helps prevent future growth.
- EPA-Registered Solution: Registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for mold control when used as directed.
- Bleach-Free, Odorless, VOC-Free: Contains no bleach, ammonia, or volatile organic compounds, helping maintain healthy indoor air quality.
- Safe on Most Surfaces: Works on drywall, wood, tile, grout, concrete, fabric, and other common building materials.
- Versatile Use: Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, basements, attics, laundry rooms, vehicles, and outdoor surfaces such as decks and patios.
If humidity stays high, use air conditioning or a dehumidifier as needed. Follow the appliance instructions, including how to empty its reservoir or drain it. Neither device repairs a leak or removes mold embedded in damaged material; think of them as moisture-control tools, not substitutes for repairs or cleanup.

Choose ventilation based on outdoor humidity
Opening windows can help lower indoor humidity only when the outdoor air is not humid and conditions allow. On a warm, very humid rainy day, bringing in outside air may slow drying instead. The EPA warns, “If the air outside is very humid and warm, it can slow down the drying process.” Use air conditioning or a dehumidifier when outdoor air would add moisture.

- KILLS MOLD: EPA-registered formula kills mold and helps control mold and mildew on hard, nonporous surfaces when used as directed
- CLEANS AND DISINFECTS: Ready-to-use disinfectant cleaner provides non-acid cleaning performance while disinfecting treated hard, nonporous surfaces
- INHIBITS MILDEW GROWTH: Helps inhibit the growth of mold and mildew and the odors they cause when applied according to label directions.
- BLEACH-FREE FORMULA: Bleach-free cleaner deodorizes treated surfaces and leaves behind a fresh scent
- READY-TO-USE SPRAY: 32 fl oz trigger bottle is designed for household, commercial and industrial cleaning applications
Exhaust moisture-producing activities outdoors: run the bathroom fan during showers and the kitchen exhaust fan while cooking or washing dishes. Vent clothes dryers to the exterior, not into the home. These habits reduce indoor moisture without depending on open windows.
Prevent condensation on cold surfaces
Condensation forms when humid indoor air meets a cold surface, such as a window, wall, or pipe. Wipe away condensation when you see it, then reduce the humidity source. If it repeatedly forms on cold pipes, insulate them; for recurring condensation on walls or windows, address the moisture and cold-surface conditions rather than repeatedly wiping without a change.

Dry wet materials promptly
Do not wait for a musty smell to appear. EPA’s 2014 general prevention guidance says to dry wet or damp materials within 24–48 hours to reduce the chance of mold growth. Its flood guidance warns that growth can occur on materials left wet for more than 24 hours. A CDC public message dated August 26, 2026 uses a 48–72-hour timeframe for cleaning and drying wet items after rain or flood intrusion. These are differently worded recommendations, not a guaranteed safe waiting period: act as soon as possible.
Separate cleanable hard surfaces from porous items. EPA recommends washing small mold patches on hard surfaces with detergent and water, then drying them completely. Porous materials such as ceiling tiles or carpet may need to be removed because growth can extend into them. Do not paint or caulk over mold instead of cleaning, drying, or replacing affected material.
When rainy-weather cleanup needs professional help
EPA’s homeowner guidance uses approximately 10 square feet—roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch—as a marker: many smaller cases can be handled by following its cleanup guidance, while larger areas or extensive water damage merit professional remediation guidance.
- Get qualified help for extensive water damage, mold covering more than about 10 square feet, or damage you cannot safely assess.
- Take extra care with contaminated floodwater or mold involving HVAC equipment. EPA advises against using an HVAC system affected by flooding; typical systems may not dry a home by themselves when humidity is very high.
- People with asthma or weakened immune systems should stay away from moldy cleanup sites. Consult a health professional about symptoms or health concerns.
- If you hire a remediation contractor, check their experience and references. Follow current local safety instructions for flood cleanup and re-entry.
After cleanup, check again for continuing water damage, visible growth, or a musty odor. If the source of moisture remains, mold is likely to recur.
Quick Recap
A practical rainy-weather routine
- After heavy rain, inspect ceilings, windows, exterior walls, under sinks, basements, and stored belongings for dampness or water entry.
- Check indoor humidity with a hygrometer; aim for 30–50 percent when practical and keep it below 60 percent.
- Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and make sure the clothes dryer vents outdoors.
- Open windows only when outdoor air is not humid; otherwise use air conditioning or a dehumidifier as appropriate.
- Wipe condensation, address its source, and dry leaks, spills, and wet items promptly.
