How to Prevent Fingerprints on Stainless Steel Appliances

The most reliable way to prevent visible fingerprints is to match your cleaning method to the appliance’s finish. Traditional stainless steel can usually be cleaned with warm, soapy water, a nonabrasive sponge or microfiber cloth, wiping with the grain, and thorough drying. Fingerprint-resistant finishes—often protected by a clear coat—typically call for mild soap, warm water, and a soft microfiber cloth, while many common stainless-steel cleaners and household chemicals are prohibited. These finishes reduce how obvious marks are; they do not make fingerprints impossible.

Start by identifying the finish

“Stainless steel” describes the material, not one universal surface treatment. Two appliances can look similar but require different products. Whirlpool separates traditional stainless from fingerprint-resistant surfaces, GE describes its fingerprint-resistant finish as a clear-coated surface, and KitchenAid gives separate directions for its PrintShield finish. Read the appliance’s owner’s manual or the care label before applying polish, spray, or any specialty cleaner. If the manual’s instructions conflict with a general stainless-steel tip, follow the appliance maker’s instructions.

Finish or guidance set Recommended basic method Important cautions
Traditional stainless steel (Whirlpool guidance) Warm, soapy water; a nonabrasive sponge; then a clean microfiber or soft cloth. Wipe with the grain and dry completely. A compatible stainless-steel cleaner may be used for fingerprints, oil, water spots, or food buildup when the manual permits it. Keep polish off plastic trim and rubber gaskets.
GE fingerprint-resistant stainless Mild soap and warm water with a clean, soft cloth or microfiber cloth; dry with another clean cloth or microfiber towel. GE warns against stainless-steel cleaners, bleach or chlorine bleach, abrasives, paper towels, window sprays, ammonia, vinegar or other acidic cleaners, oven cleaners, and alkaline cleaners on this finish.
KitchenAid PrintShield fingerprint-resistant finish Mild soap, warm water, a microfiber or other soft cloth, and thorough drying. Use the product and method specified for the particular appliance; do not assume a traditional-stainless polish is compatible.

Do not try to identify a coating only by touch or shine. The manual is the dependable way to determine whether the front is ordinary stainless steel or a protected, fingerprint-resistant finish.

Why fingerprints keep coming back

Fingerprints are a mixture of skin oils, moisture, and particles transferred when you touch a door, drawer, or handle. A coating can make those marks less noticeable and easier to remove, but it cannot prevent contact or transfer. Handles, dispenser controls, and the area around a refrigerator’s water or ice controls generally receive the most touches, so they may need attention more often than a side panel.

Fingerprints become more conspicuous when a thin film of oil is spread across a larger area or when water dries over it. Drying is therefore part of prevention, not merely a cosmetic final step: it removes residual moisture that can leave streaks or spots and gives oils less wet residue to cling to.

The small kit that works across most finishes

  • Two clean microfiber or other soft cloths: use one for washing and one for drying. A fresh, dry cloth is also useful for a final buff.
  • Warm water: it loosens ordinary residue without requiring a strong chemical.
  • Mild dish soap: use only a small amount when the manual permits soap-and-water cleaning.
  • A nonabrasive sponge: Whirlpool lists this for traditional stainless steel. Never use a scouring pad or abrasive side.
  • A finish-compatible stainless-steel cleaner: optional for traditional stainless only, and only when the appliance instructions allow it.

Keep cloths used on the appliance free of grit and residue from other cleaning jobs. A particle trapped in a cloth can create scratches even when the liquid itself is mild.

Universal preparation before wiping

  1. Read the care instructions. Look for the exact finish name and any prohibited products. GE’s list for its fingerprint-resistant surface is substantially stricter than its guidance for ordinary stainless steel.
  2. Remove jewelry or anything that could drag across the front. Rings, watchbands, and hard hardware can scratch a surface regardless of the cleaner.
  3. Use a clean cloth and a small amount of solution. The cloth should be damp, not dripping. Excess liquid can run into controls, seams, trim, or gaskets.
  4. Test an inconspicuous spot if the instructions permit a product. Stop if the finish changes, becomes cloudy, or develops an uneven sheen, and consult the maker rather than adding another chemical.

Routine for traditional stainless steel

1. Wash with warm, soapy water

Whirlpool recommends warm, soapy water and a nonabrasive sponge for traditional stainless surfaces. Work in manageable sections so the solution does not dry on the metal. Use light pressure; pressing harder does not make an oily film dissolve faster and can grind debris into the finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Follow the grain

Look closely for the fine, directional lines in the metal. Wipe evenly in that direction instead of making random circles. Following the grain helps the cleaned area retain a consistent appearance and makes any remaining streak easier to see.

3. Rinse residue from the cloth, not by flooding the appliance

When the cloth picks up grease or food residue, refold it to expose a clean section or rinse it. Keep water under control around electronic panels, seams, and door edges.

4. Dry immediately

Use a clean microfiber or soft cloth to remove moisture, again moving with the grain. Maytag also recommends a clean, dry microfiber cloth for buffing fingerprints and wiping with the grain. Do not leave the surface to air-dry if your water tends to leave spots.

5. Use polish only for a compatible need

Whirlpool says a cleaner designed for stainless steel can help with fingerprints, oil buildup, water spots, and food buildup on traditional stainless. Treat this as an optional, finish-specific step rather than the default routine. Follow the product directions, apply only where the appliance maker allows it, and keep the polish away from plastic trim and rubber gaskets. Do not transfer this step to a clear-coated fingerprint-resistant front unless its own manual explicitly approves it.

Routine for fingerprint-resistant stainless steel

1. Choose mild soap and warm water

For the GE fingerprint-resistant finish described in its care guidance, use mild soap and warm water with a clean, soft cloth or microfiber cloth. KitchenAid gives similar directions for PrintShield surfaces. This low-chemical method is intentional: a clear coat can react differently from bare stainless steel.

2. Wipe gently and evenly

Use overlapping passes to lift the marks rather than scrubbing one spot aggressively. A soft cloth supplies enough friction for fresh fingerprints without the scratching risk of an abrasive pad.

3. Dry with a second cloth

Use another clean, soft cloth or microfiber towel to remove all moisture. Drying prevents water spots and reduces the streaks that can make a clean panel look dirty. If a faint line remains, use a fresh, dry microfiber cloth for a light final buff.

4. Do not improvise with stronger products

GE specifically lists stainless-steel cleaners, bleach or chlorine bleach, abrasive cleaners and cloths, paper towels, window sprays, ammonia, vinegar or other acidic cleaners, oven cleaners, and alkaline cleaners as products to avoid on its fingerprint-resistant finish. KitchenAid’s PrintShield instructions likewise call for mild soap, water, soft cloths, and careful drying. Because prohibited products vary by maker, use the exact list in your manual rather than assuming that a product labeled “for stainless steel” is safe.

Daily habits that reduce visible marks

  • Use the handle or designated touch point. Opening a refrigerator by the edge of the door spreads oil over a larger area than using the handle.
  • Touch the front with reasonably dry hands. Water mixed with skin oil leaves more visible residue than either alone.
  • Deal with a fresh mark early. A quick pass with a soft, dry microfiber cloth can remove a light fingerprint before it is spread across the panel. If the mark is oily, use the finish-approved soap-and-water method instead of rubbing harder with a dry cloth.
  • Keep a clean cloth nearby. A cloth reserved for the appliance is less likely to carry grit or chemical residue from counters and floors.
  • Dry after wiping any spill. Food, salt, and mineral residue are easier to remove while fresh and less likely to require aggressive scrubbing.

These habits reduce the frequency and size of visible marks; they do not change the finish’s underlying fingerprint resistance.

How to troubleshoot common results

What you see Likely cause Safest next step
Long streaks after cleaning Moisture or soap residue was left behind, or the final wipe crossed the grain. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth and make light passes in the grain direction. Avoid adding a stronger cleaner.
Round water spots Water dried on the surface before it was towel-dried. Repeat the approved warm-water method with a damp soft cloth, then dry immediately and buff with a fresh cloth.
Greasy haze remains The cloth was saturated with oil or the solution was too weak for the residue. For traditional stainless, repeat the soap-and-water wash or use a compatible stainless cleaner if the manual allows it. For a fingerprint-resistant finish, stay with mild soap and warm water and change to a clean cloth.
Cloudy, discolored, or uneven area after a product The product may not be compatible with a coating or trim. Stop using it, do not layer another chemical over it, and consult the appliance maker’s care guidance for the exact model.
Marks return immediately around controls Those are high-touch locations, not necessarily a cleaning failure. Use the soft-cloth routine on those areas as needed and avoid pressing on or flooding electronic controls.

What not to do

  • Do not use an abrasive sponge, scouring pad, abrasive powder, or rough cloth.
  • Do not assume vinegar, ammonia, bleach, window spray, or oven cleaner is harmless because the appliance is metal.
  • Do not use paper towels on a finish whose maker prohibits them; GE includes paper towels in its fingerprint-resistant cautions.
  • Do not spray directly into switches, displays, dispensers, seams, door gaskets, or trim.
  • Do not polish across the grain on traditional stainless when the goal is an even appearance.
  • Do not apply a traditional stainless polish to a fingerprint-resistant clear coat unless the appliance maker explicitly approves that product.
  • Do not combine cleaners. Mixing products can create a more aggressive solution and makes it harder to determine what caused a finish change.

Choosing between the two care approaches

The practical decision is not which method cleans “better” in the abstract; it is which method is compatible with your surface.

Decision factor Traditional stainless Fingerprint-resistant stainless
Primary materials Warm soapy water, nonabrasive sponge, microfiber or soft cloth Mild soap, warm water, soft or microfiber cloth
Grain-direction wiping Explicitly recommended by Whirlpool and Maytag Use gentle, even wiping; follow the appliance manual if it specifies a direction
Drying Required to avoid residual moisture and spots Especially important to avoid streaks and water spots on the coated surface
Specialty stainless cleaner Optional when compatible and used as directed Do not use unless the maker specifically says it is safe
Main damage risk Abrasives, harsh chemicals, and polish on trim or gaskets Damage to or clouding of the clear coat from prohibited cleaners, abrasives, or rough materials

There is no independent product-performance comparison in the cited manufacturer guidance, and those pages do not provide a validated percentage for fingerprint reduction or a universal cleaning frequency. The defensible expectation is narrower: the finish and correct routine can make marks less noticeable and easier to remove, while normal touching still creates fingerprints.

A simple decision tree

  1. Is the finish identified in the manual? If not, find the model-specific care page before buying a cleaner.
  2. Does it say traditional stainless? Start with warm, soapy water, a nonabrasive sponge or soft cloth, grain-direction wiping, and immediate drying. Consider a compatible stainless cleaner only for stubborn buildup.
  3. Does it say fingerprint-resistant, clear-coated, or PrintShield? Use mild soap, warm water, and a soft or microfiber cloth, then dry with a second cloth. Avoid the prohibited-product list for that maker.
  4. Did the surface change after cleaning? Stop experimenting and contact the manufacturer with the model number and product used.

Frequently overlooked details

Drying is not optional finishing polish

A damp panel can look streaky even when the fingerprint has been removed. A dry microfiber pass distinguishes leftover moisture from leftover oil and prevents minerals in evaporating water from forming spots.

“Fingerprint-resistant” is a care category, not a guarantee

The label indicates a surface designed to make fingerprints less apparent or easier to clean. It does not promise a mark-free door, eliminate the need for wiping, or authorize every product sold for stainless steel.

Model-specific instructions outrank generic advice

Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, and Maytag describe overlapping basics—soft cloths, controlled moisture, and careful drying—but their warnings are not identical. The model manual remains the final authority for the coating, trim, and controls on your appliance.

How often should you clean?

Manufacturers do not establish one universal cleaning interval or a validated fingerprint-reduction percentage. Let visibility and residue determine the timing: wipe a fresh mark when it appears, clean high-touch handles and controls whenever they look oily, and address spills promptly. A light dry-cloth pass may be enough for a new, dry print; use the full approved soap-and-water routine when oil, food, or dried water remains. Cleaning more often with an incompatible product is worse than cleaning less often with the correct method.

Special situations and limits

On a refrigerator dispenser or touch panel, put the cleaning solution on the cloth rather than spraying the appliance. Work around buttons and seams with a barely damp cloth, then dry those areas immediately. For removable handles or trim, check whether the manual gives separate instructions; a product safe for the steel panel may still harm plastic or rubber. If a mark is actually a scratch, etched spot, or permanent discoloration, repeated wiping will not restore the finish. Stop polishing and ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider what repair options exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prevent fingerprints on stainless steel appliances?

First identify whether the appliance has traditional stainless steel or a fingerprint-resistant coating. Use warm, soapy water and a nonabrasive sponge or soft cloth on traditional stainless; use mild soap, warm water, and a soft microfiber cloth on the cited GE and KitchenAid coated finishes. Wipe gently, then dry completely with a clean microfiber cloth. Use the handle, keep hands reasonably dry, and remove fresh marks before they spread.

How do I clean fingerprint-resistant stainless steel?

Follow the model manual. GE and KitchenAid recommend mild soap, warm water, and a clean soft or microfiber cloth, followed by thorough drying with another cloth. Do not assume a cleaner labeled for stainless steel is suitable for a clear-coated finish.

Can I use vinegar, ammonia, bleach, or window cleaner?

Not on GE’s fingerprint-resistant finish: GE lists vinegar and other acidic cleaners, ammonia, bleach or chlorine bleach, window sprays, and several other strong products among its cautions. Because restrictions differ by maker and finish, check the exact manual instead of relying on a general stainless-steel rule.

Is stainless-steel polish safe for every appliance?

No. Whirlpool allows a compatible stainless-steel cleaner as an optional treatment for some traditional stainless surfaces, including fingerprints, oil, water spots, and food buildup. Keep it off plastic trim and rubber gaskets. Do not use it on a fingerprint-resistant or clear-coated front unless that appliance maker explicitly approves it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I wipe with the grain?

For traditional stainless, Whirlpool and Maytag recommend wiping and drying in the direction of the grain, the fine lines visible in the metal. For a coated finish, use gentle, even passes and follow the model manual if it specifies a direction.

Why do fingerprints come back immediately after cleaning?

Handles, dispenser controls, and nearby areas are touched repeatedly, so quick reappearance is normal and does not necessarily indicate cleaning failure. Fingerprint-resistant coatings make marks less noticeable or easier to remove; they do not prevent skin oil and moisture from reaching the surface.

What should I do if the appliance looks cloudy after cleaning?

Stop using the product, do not layer another chemical over it, and consult the maker’s model-specific care guidance. Clouding or uneven sheen can indicate an incompatible cleaner or damage to a clear coat. Have the model number and product name available when contacting the manufacturer.

Are paper towels or abrasive sponges acceptable?

Use clean, soft microfiber or other soft cloths. Whirlpool permits a nonabrasive sponge for traditional stainless, but abrasive pads and rough materials can scratch. GE specifically lists paper towels among the products to avoid on its fingerprint-resistant finish.

The Bottom Line

Preventing fingerprints is mostly a finish-identification and drying routine: check the manual, use mild soap and warm water where directed, wipe gently, follow the grain on traditional stainless, and dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Reserve specialty polish for compatible traditional stainless surfaces, avoid the maker’s prohibited products, and expect fingerprints to remain possible even on a fingerprint-resistant finish.
