Its main defenses are Windows Software Restriction Policy (SRP) rules, program and real-time filtering, malware definitions, hash checks, and—on paid editions—HoneyPot behavior monitoring.
If files are already encrypted or the computer is infected, do not expect CryptoPrevent to recover them. Isolate the machine, preserve evidence, remove the malware with an appropriate response process, and restore from a clean backup or involve an incident-response specialist.

What CryptoPrevent is—and what “prevent CryptoLocker” really means
CryptoPrevent is Windows anti-malware software from d7xTech. It is designed to block or interrupt malware activity before it can execute, including ransomware that encrypts personal files and demands payment. The vendor describes it as a security supplement rather than a replacement for a conventional antivirus product.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The name comes from CryptoLocker, the ransomware family that made file-encrypting attacks widely known. A current installation may still apply controls that stop the same kinds of execution and encryption behavior, but no responsible claim can say that CryptoPrevent blocks every ransomware strain. New ransomware can use different delivery methods, exploits, signed tools, stolen credentials, or previously unknown behavior.

Think of CryptoPrevent as one preventive layer. Keep a supported operating system, install security updates, use a non-administrator account for routine work, protect administrator credentials, and maintain backups that ransomware cannot alter. Those controls are essential even when CryptoPrevent is installed.
How CryptoPrevent’s protection works
Windows Software Restriction Policy rules
CryptoPrevent’s original protection method is Windows Software Restriction Policy (SRP). The current product creates just under 4,000 SRP rules, according to d7xTech. These rules restrict execution from locations and patterns commonly abused by malware. Because SRP is an operating-system control, it can stop a malicious executable before a conventional signature-based scan identifies it.
SRP is a prevention mechanism, not a verdict that a file is safe. A legitimate tool launched from a restricted location may be blocked, and malware that runs through an allowed process or uses a different technique may require other defenses. That is why the product combines SRP with filtering and definition updates.
Program filtering, real-time filtering, and definitions
The product includes a program filter, real-time filtering, definition updates, and hash-based checks. The standard definition set contains more than 50,000 entries. An optional extended set contains more than 70,000 entries, but d7xTech warns that the extended list is less thoroughly vetted and can create false positives.

Hash checks compare a program’s calculated fingerprint with known entries. They are useful when a malicious file matches a known sample, while real-time filtering can inspect activity as programs run. Neither method can identify every new or modified threat, so the software should remain updated and should not be treated as a substitute for patching and backups.
HoneyPot ransomware protection in paid editions
Paid editions add HoneyPot ransomware protection. d7xTech describes it as detecting malicious encryption activity and terminating non-essential programs to stop the process. This is a vendor description, not an independent test result. It should be understood as an additional behavior-based control, not a promise that every encryption attempt will be stopped or that already changed files will be restored.
Does CryptoPrevent still prevent CryptoLocker?
It can still provide preventive controls against the execution patterns and behaviors associated with file-encrypting malware, but “still prevents CryptoLocker” is too broad if it is read as a guarantee. The product is maintained in paid editions through program and definition updates, while the free edition is frozen at an older version.
Ransomware prevention has two separate outcomes:
- Stopping execution or encryption: SRP, filtering, definitions, and HoneyPot controls may interrupt an attack.
- Recovering after encryption: CryptoPrevent does not decrypt files, undo encryption, or clean an already infected computer.
Use the first outcome as risk reduction. Plan backups and incident response for the second.

CryptoPrevent editions, update terms, and prices
The official pricing page lists the following terms. The subscription renews automatically each year; fixed-term licenses do not renew automatically.
| Edition or term | Price | What the term covers |
|---|---|---|
| Free edition | Free | Limited to CryptoPrevent version 9.1; no current program or definition updates. |
| Automatically renewing subscription | $15 per year | Program updates, definition updates, and user support during the active annual subscription; renews annually. |
| Fixed one-year license | $20 | Program updates, definition updates, and user support during one year; does not renew automatically. |
| Fixed three-year license | $51 | Program updates, definition updates, and user support during three years; does not renew automatically. |
| Fixed five-year license | $75 | Program updates, definition updates, and user support during five years; does not renew automatically. |
After a paid license expires, d7xTech says the protections already installed remain active, but program and definition updates and user support stop until a new license is purchased. That distinction matters: a computer can continue running existing rules while losing coverage for newer threats and compatibility fixes.
The free edition can still be installed, but its version 9.1 ceiling means it does not receive the current protection methodology. For a newly configured PC, an unsupported, unupdated security product should not be your only ransomware defense.

- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
| Windows version | Published support |
|---|---|
| Windows 7 Service Pack 1 | Home and Pro, 32-bit or 64-bit |
| Windows 8 | Home and Pro, 32-bit or 64-bit |
| Windows 8.1 | Home and Pro, 32-bit or 64-bit |
| Windows 10 | Home and Pro, 32-bit or 64-bit |
| Windows 11 | Home and Pro, 32-bit or 64-bit |
These are the vendor’s published desktop requirements. Confirm compatibility before deploying CryptoPrevent on a server, a managed enterprise image, or a Windows edition outside Home and Pro. Windows support also does not mean that the operating system itself remains in security support; use a currently supported Windows release whenever possible.
How to deploy CryptoPrevent safely
The exact installer screens can change between releases, but this sequence keeps the important decisions in the right order.
- Check the computer. Verify that it runs one of the listed Windows versions and determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. On a business network, check application compatibility and policy conflicts before changing SRP rules.
- Choose the license deliberately. Select the free edition only if you accept the version 9.1 and update limitations. For current updates and support, choose a paid term and note whether it renews automatically.
- Install alongside, not instead of, antivirus. The vendor describes CryptoPrevent as a supplement. Keep a supported antivirus product unless its documentation specifically confirms compatibility and coverage.
- Allow the preventive controls to be created. The installation applies CryptoPrevent’s SRP rules and filtering components. If a legitimate application is blocked, record the program, its path, and the event before changing an allow rule.
- Enable the paid-edition HoneyPot feature when available. Treat it as an additional behavior control. It does not replace backups or make encrypted files recoverable.
- Run the product’s update function periodically. d7xTech explicitly tells users to check for and install the latest version using the program’s update function. Updates are especially important for paid users because the license term includes current program and definition updates.
- Test normal work. Open the applications your household or organization depends on, including accounting, line-of-business, backup, and remote-support tools. Resolve a false positive before the computer is needed for an emergency.
- Document the installation. Record the edition, license expiration date, Windows version, and any exceptions. This prevents an expired license or an undocumented allow rule from being overlooked later.
What to do if ransomware is already running
CryptoPrevent’s FAQ is explicit: it is designed for prevention and cannot help if the computer is already infected. It cannot decrypt files, reverse encryption, or perform malware cleanup.
If you see a ransom note, sudden file-name changes, or unusual encryption activity:
Best Value
- POWERFUL, LIGHTNING-FAST ANTIVIRUS: Protects your computer from viruses and malware through the cloud; Webroot scans faster, uses fewer system resources and safeguards your devices in real-time by identifying and blocking new threats
- IDENTITY THEFT PROTECTION: Protects your usernames, account numbers and other personal information against keyloggers, spyware and other online threats targeting valuable personal data
- REAL-TIME ANTI-PHISHING: Proactively scans websites, emails and other communications and warns you of potential danger before you click to effectively stop malicious attempts to steal your personal information
- ALWAYS UP TO DATE: Webroot scours 95% of the Internet three times per day including billions of web pages, files and apps to determine what is safe online and enhances the software automatically without time-consuming updates
- Isolate the system. Disconnect network cables and disable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to limit spread to shared folders and other devices. Do not reconnect it merely to test whether files open.
- Preserve evidence. Photograph or save the ransom note, note the time of discovery, and avoid deleting suspicious files. Evidence can help an incident responder identify the family and determine whether a decryptor exists.
- Protect unaffected systems. Disconnect backup destinations and shared storage that may still be clean. Do not attach a backup drive to the infected computer until the environment is trusted.
- Use a separate, trusted system for response guidance. Malware removal steps vary by family. A specialist can advise on imaging, eradication, and whether payment or negotiation is legally or operationally appropriate; neither payment nor decryption is guaranteed.
- Restore only after eradication. Rebuild or clean the system, patch it, reset compromised credentials, and restore from a backup whose contents and date you can verify. Test restored files before returning the computer to normal use.
CryptoPrevent versus a broader anti-malware suite
A product such as Malwarebytes Premium represents a different approach. Its official ransomware page says Premium proactively scans and protects against ransomware, blocks zero-day ransomware on Windows, and can remove threats after a scan. Those are the manufacturer’s claims, not an independent comparative test.
| Decision factor | CryptoPrevent | Malwarebytes Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Primary scope | Windows SRP rules, program and real-time filtering, definitions, hash checks, and paid-edition HoneyPot behavior protection. | Broader anti-malware and ransomware scanning and protection, according to the product’s official description. |
| After-infection role | Prevention only; the vendor says it cannot clean an already infected computer or decrypt files. | The vendor says Premium can scan for and remove detected threats. |
| Update model | Free edition is limited to version 9.1; paid editions receive updates during the license term. | Coverage and update terms follow that product’s own license and platform policies. |
| Operating-system coverage | Published support is Windows 7 SP1, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 Home and Pro, 32-bit or 64-bit. | Use the platform list published for the specific Premium release. |
| Administration | Consumer-oriented installation, with d7xTech also documenting bulk packs, customized installers, and resale or white-label options for IT providers. | Deployment and administration depend on the product and license selected. |
The practical choice is not simply “which antivirus wins.” CryptoPrevent fits a Windows user who specifically wants SRP-based prevention and a ransomware-focused extra layer. A broader suite is more appropriate when scanning, cleanup, web protection, or multi-platform coverage is the priority. Running overlapping real-time security products can create conflicts, so verify compatibility and test before rolling out either approach widely.
False positives, compatibility, and maintenance trade-offs
Extended definitions can block legitimate software
The extended hash-definition set exceeds 70,000 entries but is less vetted and may produce false positives. Enable it only when the additional detection coverage is worth investigating blocked applications. Keep a documented exception process rather than disabling all protection after one false positive.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
SRP rules can affect specialized workflows
Applications that launch components from temporary folders, user-writable directories, scripts, or unusual paths are more likely to encounter policy restrictions. Test line-of-business software, installers, backup agents, and remote-management tools before deployment. A managed environment should stage changes on a pilot group and retain a rollback plan.
Outdated protection creates a false sense of security
A paid license that has expired may leave existing protections active, but it no longer receives current program or definition updates or user support. The free edition’s version 9.1 limit has the same practical concern. Put renewal or replacement dates on your maintenance calendar.
Layered ransomware defenses that CryptoPrevent does not provide
- Use a currently supported Windows release and apply operating-system, browser, and application patches promptly.
- Keep routine work on a standard user account and reserve administrator rights for tasks that need them.
- Use offline, disconnected, or otherwise protected backups with version history so ransomware cannot encrypt every copy.
- Test restoring files and document who can authorize a rebuild.
- Restrict unnecessary remote access and protect remote-administration credentials with strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available.
- Train users not to open unexpected attachments, enable macros from untrusted documents, or bypass security warnings merely to keep working.
- Monitor shared folders and servers separately; a desktop prevention tool does not secure every device that can reach the same data.
Who should use CryptoPrevent?
CryptoPrevent is most defensible for a Windows home user or small organization that wants an additional, Windows-specific prevention layer and understands its limits. Paid editions make more sense when current definitions, program updates, support, and HoneyPot protection matter.
It is a poor fit as the sole security product, as a decryptor, or as a rescue utility for an infected PC. Organizations with servers, centrally managed policies, or many endpoints should validate the SRP changes, licensing, exception handling, and deployment options with their administrator before installation. d7xTech documents bulk packs, customized installers, and resale or white-label editions for IT providers, but those arrangements do not remove the need for testing and incident-response planning.
