Preventing corrosion and fouling in seawater electrolysis requires coordinated control of anode chemistry, cathode deposits, electrolyte, membranes and cell design. Chloride can drive unwanted oxidation and attack anode surfaces, while the local pH rise at a hydrogen-evolving cathode can cause magnesium- and calcium-containing solids to form. No single coating, chemical treatment or cleaning schedule is established as a universal fix.
Why seawater electrolysis systems degrade
Seawater creates two distinct durability problems inside the same cell. At the anode, chloride can compete with oxygen evolution and form chlorine-based products, including chlorine gas (Cl2) and hypochlorite (OCl−); chloride chemistry can also undermine electrode durability. At the cathode, hydrogen evolution raises pH close to the surface, which can promote precipitation of magnesium- and calcium-containing compounds. Deposits may adhere to the electrode, cover active sites and hinder continued operation.

These mechanisms are described in reviews of long-term seawater electrolysis durability, chlorine-evolution avoidance and direct seawater electrolysis. Because the anode and cathode problems differ, an intervention that addresses one does not necessarily control the other.
Control chloride reactions and anode corrosion
An anode strategy needs to address both reaction selectivity and resistance to attack. A bulk substrate described as corrosion-resistant may still have a surface that favors unwanted chloride oxidation; material choice alone does not establish that oxygen evolution will dominate under a particular feed chemistry and operating condition.

Design approaches under study
- Selective or protective layers: engineered layers are reviewed as ways to influence chloride access, reaction pathways or surface durability. Their effectiveness depends on the electrode and cell context; the reviews do not identify a single coating as best for all seawater compositions and operating conditions.
- Surface and interface engineering: catalyst and interface design can seek to favor oxygen evolution while reducing chloride-related reactions and damage.
- Corrosion-resistant materials: material selection matters, but should be evaluated alongside surface selectivity rather than treated as a stand-alone solution.
- Electrolyte and cell changes: chemistry adjustments, barriers and cell configurations may help limit chloride oxidation or transport, with possible effects on other components and operating demands.
These are research and design directions, not an off-the-shelf coating specification. Compare candidates using data for the intended feed salinity, pH, current density and device architecture; evidence from one condition should not be assumed to transfer to another.
Manage cathode mineral deposition separately
At the hydrogen-evolving cathode, local alkalinity can encourage magnesium- and calcium-containing precipitates. This is a deposition and interface problem, not simply another form of anode corrosion. Approaches discussed in durability reviews include changing surface adsorption or interfacial behavior and suppressing precipitation or deposit adherence. Membrane choice and cell configuration can also influence the conditions at the electrode.

- Forms a water resistant barrier on marine engines and other non‑painted and painted metal surfaces
- Easy to use 12 oz. spray can with attachable straw for crevice and small space applications
- Clear film coating quickly dries to the touch and does not gunk up over long-term use
- Engineered for saltwater and freshwater environments
- Can also be used elsewhere on the boat, on motor vehicles, ATV/UTV, motorcycles, bicycles, tools, or other metals you want to provide with long-lasting corrosion protection
The reviewed evidence does not establish a universal acid wash, chelant, mechanical removal method or cleaning interval. Those choices require configuration-specific evidence, including compatibility with the electrode, membrane and other wetted components. A cleaning method that removes a deposit could also affect the materials or chemistry that the device relies on.

Choose controls as a coupled system
Electrolyte chemistry, electrodes, membranes and cell architecture interact. An intervention intended to reduce chloride reactions or mineral scaling can add chemical inputs, more complex architecture, cost, component lifetime limits or scale-up challenges. Reviews of seawater electrolysis discuss these trade-offs, but do not provide comparable product-level performance data for every option.

Evaluate a proposed design across the full set of relevant questions: Does it suppress chloride oxidation while maintaining oxygen-evolution selectivity? Does the anode resist corrosion? Does the cathode resist magnesium and calcium deposition, and can deposits be managed? Are membrane compatibility and ion crossover addressed? Is stability demonstrated under realistic seawater and sustained operation? What complexity, chemical use, cost and scale-up burden does the approach add?

Review articles establish mechanisms and broad classes of mitigation, not an equipment-independent operating standard. Before adopting a control strategy, distinguish results in simplified electrolytes from tests using realistic seawater. A useful durability report should make clear the feed conditions, test duration and current density, and measure corrosion, deposits and product selectivity; without that information, a result cannot establish long-term seawater performance.

Use pH measurement as monitoring, not prevention
If pH is an experimental or pilot control variable, measure and record it under the relevant operating conditions. A laboratory pH meter can support that measurement, but it does not block chloride, prevent mineral precipitation or certify safe operation. Appropriate range, calibration and chemical compatibility depend on the setup. The review discussion of pH control supports monitoring its role, not a particular instrument recommendation.

Do not infer a general corrosion rate, fouling rate, service life or percentage improvement from the review sources. They do not establish a universal inhibitor dose, coating specification, service interval or cleaning schedule either. Those values require primary data for the actual feed, materials, current density, cell design and duration.

Direct seawater use is not automatically the simpler route
Direct seawater electrolysis is an active research area, but the available reviews do not establish one best route or a universal operating recipe. Treat raw-seawater operation and any alternative involving water treatment as system choices to compare on selectivity, durability, fouling management, chemical and materials demands, complexity and scale-up evidence—not as an assumption that avoiding pretreatment necessarily simplifies the overall process. The 2025 review of direct seawater electrolysis and the 2024 durability review frame the challenge across catalysts and systems.
