Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo reduce OLED burn-in risk, avoid leaving bright, fixed elements—such as channel logos, news tickers, game HUDs, taskbars and paused menus—in the same place for long periods. Use a screen saver or turn the display off when you step away, enable pixel shift and logo-dimming features if your model offers them, and let its automatic panel-care cycle finish. These habits lower exposure to repeated static content; they do not guarantee that burn-in can never occur.
What OLED burn-in is—and what it is not
OLED burn-in is persistent image retention: a mark associated with content that has occupied the same screen area repeatedly or for prolonged periods. It remains visible while other content is displayed. Temporary image retention can also leave a ghostlike image, but it may fade rather than persist. LG identifies prolonged static content as a cause of persistent burn-in.

The practical concern is not one particular logo or game. It is repeated exposure to bright, fixed elements in consistent positions: a broadcast logo, a news ticker, a game health bar, a desktop taskbar, a paused frame or an application menu. A single short pause does not establish that a screen is damaged, and manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal number of safe minutes or a general probability of burn-in.

A TV station logo or game interface may be part of the content you want to watch. The useful change is to avoid leaving that same material on screen unnecessarily when you are not watching or using it. Varying content, using a screen saver, or turning the display off when you step away are practical ways to limit the time fixed elements remain in place.

Use the display in ways that reduce static exposure
When you pause or leave the room
Do not leave a paused game, video, fixed menu or desktop visible while you are away. Resume playback, switch to varied content, activate a screen saver or turn the display off. A screen saver helps because it replaces a static image; turning the display off removes the image altogether. For a short interruption, using the screen saver or display’s own protection feature may be convenient. If you are done for a longer period, turning the screen off avoids leaving the same paused image or interface in view.
Automatic screen-saver behavior is device-specific. LG USA Support describes a TV screen saver that activates after about two minutes with no activity when the TV detects a no-signal screen or paused video. Samsung support describes a two-minute trigger for specified still-image or no-input situations, with exceptions depending on the source and app. Those are product behaviors, not a universal OLED timer or a safe-duration rule. Do not assume that a two-minute trigger applies to every input, game, streaming app or computer connection; check how the feature works on the particular device and source you use.
A screen saver is not a substitute for checking what is actually displayed. If a device menu, paused game or desktop remains visible because the screen saver does not activate in that situation, close the menu, use the device’s screen saver, switch to moving content or turn off the display. The aim is to avoid leaving a fixed image in place simply because you expect an automatic feature to intervene.
For long viewing sessions
Consider a less bright picture mode or lower OLED pixel brightness if that remains comfortable for your room and content. LG’s model-specific manual recommends Eco mode and lower OLED Pixel Brightness for long viewing. The guidance does not establish one brightness number that is right for every display, room or viewer, so treat this as an adjustment to consider rather than a mandatory setting. The practical point is to use a level that works for you rather than assuming the brightest available setting is necessary for every session.
For content with persistent black bars or fixed menus from a connected device, use an appropriate aspect-ratio setting when it suits the content, and close the device’s setup menus when you are done. Do not distort ordinary viewing just to eliminate bars; the goal is to avoid unnecessarily displaying fixed elements for extended periods. In particular, an external device’s setup or status screen should not be left open after you have finished configuring it.

When choosing what to adjust, focus on recurring situations: a news channel watched for long stretches with its logo and ticker in the same positions, a game with a persistent HUD, or a computer desktop with a taskbar that is always visible. You do not need to treat every scene with a logo or interface as an emergency. Reduce avoidable idle display time and use the protective options the model provides.
Turn on the protection features your model provides
Pixel shift or screen shift
Pixel shift moves the image slightly over time so that a fixed element does not always occupy exactly the same pixels. Look in your model’s picture or panel-care settings for a feature named Pixel Shift, Screen Shift or a similar term. Names and availability differ by device. Samsung says Pixel Shift is on by default on the monitor models covered by its US guidance and advises checking that it remains on. Its support wording is: “The Pixel Shift setting is turned on by default, but make sure it is set to On.”
Pixel shift is an additional protection, not permission to leave a paused menu or static image on screen indefinitely. Its purpose is to move image content slightly, not to remove the content or guarantee that a repeatedly displayed element cannot leave a persistent mark. Check the exact model’s settings and manual rather than searching for one universal menu path; even within one brand, names and options can vary.
Logo dimming or logo detection
Logo-dimming features reduce brightness in areas identified as logos or other persistent bright elements. If your TV or monitor offers a setting such as Logo Detection or Adjust Logo Brightness, enable it or choose a stronger reduction level if appropriate. Samsung describes Logo Detection as reducing brightness in the affected logo area and says setting logo brightness to High can dim logos further. LG’s model-specific manual also recommends Adjust Logo Brightness at High. The setting’s name and effect can differ between models.
These options can be useful when the same bright graphic remains in a predictable part of the screen, such as a channel logo. They do not replace sensible use: a persistent ticker, game interface or application menu may not be handled identically by every device. If the image remains static because playback is paused or an external menu is open, use the pause-time habits as well as any available logo protection.

Screen saver and automatic dimming options
Enable an available screen saver and review any automatic dimming or panel-protection options in the manual for your exact model. Some options activate only in particular situations—such as a paused video or no input—and may behave differently with particular apps or sources. Do not assume that the TV will protect a paused game or desktop in exactly the same way as a paused video.

For example, a screen saver that responds to a no-signal state may not be the same as one that starts during a paused app. Likewise, a logo-dimming feature is aimed at persistent bright areas and is not the same function as turning the display off. If a feature is unavailable, use the other supported habits: limit unnecessary static display, lower brightness when practical, and allow automatic panel care to operate as directed.
Let automatic panel care run; do not make manual refresh a routine
Many OLED displays perform automatic pixel cleaning or panel optimization. These cycles are maintenance, not a substitute for avoiding prolonged static content. Follow the instructions for your model, leave the device connected to power when required, and do not turn it back on while an active cycle is running. The timing and duration below are manufacturer-specific examples, not a way to compare panel durability.
LG USA Support describes automatic pixel cleaning after four cumulative hours of use and a longer automatic calibration after 2,000 cumulative hours. LG says that the longer calibration runs after the TV is turned off and takes about an hour. Those numbers describe the behavior LG documents for its TVs; they are not a universal interval for OLED screens. The four-hour figure is a trigger for a maintenance process in that guidance, not a claim that four hours of static content is safe or that a panel needs a user-started refresh every four hours.
For Samsung OLED monitors covered by Samsung US Support, Screen Optimization runs after at least four cumulative hours and when the monitor is turned off. Samsung estimates that this optimization takes about 10–15 minutes. A separate, manually initiated Pixel Refresh may take more than an hour and is not available on every model. The shorter automatic optimization and longer manual refresh are distinct operations; do not treat them as interchangeable or assume either timing applies to another manufacturer’s product.

LG says the longer calibration runs after the TV is turned off and takes about an hour. | Follow the exact TV’s instructions for any manual pixel-cleaning option. LG’s support guidance includes model-specific paths; the cited timing should not be generalized to other models. |
| Samsung OLED monitors covered by Samsung US Support, undated page accessed in 2026 | Screen Optimization runs after at least four cumulative hours when the monitor is turned off; Samsung estimates about 10–15 minutes. | Pixel Refresh may take more than an hour and is not available on every monitor model. |
These intervals describe the cited manufacturers’ processes, not how long static content is safe to display. If the device is off but connected to power, allow it to complete its automatic operation when its manual says it needs to do so. Do not repeatedly interrupt an active cycle by turning the screen back on. If the manual specifies that the display needs power while off for care to run, leave it connected rather than unplugging it immediately after use.
Manual refresh is not a routine ritual or a preventive step to run on a schedule of your own choosing. It can take a long time, may not be available on every model and should be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, especially when troubleshooting a visible mark. Do not generalize one manufacturer’s menu path, interval or process to another TV or monitor. If you are unsure whether your model has an automatic or manual option, check its manual or support guidance before starting anything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you notice a mark
- Check whether it is temporary. Display varied content and see whether the mark fades. A ghost image that fades may be temporary retention; a mark that persists across other content warrants further checking. Do not decide that the panel has permanent burn-in from one paused frame or one momentary image.
- Rule out the source. Check whether the mark appears with a different app or input, and inspect connected devices and signal sources. A logo or overlay may come from the broadcast, app or external device rather than the panel. Changing the source helps establish whether the mark is tied to one signal or appears across different content.
- Use the manufacturer’s picture test and support instructions. Follow the steps for your exact model. LG’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking sources and external devices as well as model-specific pixel-cleaning paths. A model’s picture test and support procedure are more useful than applying another device’s refresh instructions.
- Run a manual refresh only if the model’s instructions call for it. It is a troubleshooting step, not a routine ritual. Check availability, duration and operating conditions in the exact manual, and let an active cycle finish.
If the mark remains after source checks and the manufacturer-recommended steps, contact the manufacturer’s support service with the model number and a description of when the mark appears. Note whether it is visible across different inputs and content, and whether it changes or fades. Do not assume that a single refresh cycle will repair persistent burn-in.
Why the exact model matters
Feature names, menu locations, availability and panel-care schedules vary by manufacturer, model, software and region. Even products from one manufacturer may have different menu paths across software generations. Samsung explicitly notes that Pixel Refresh is not available on all monitor models. Use the manual for the exact TV or monitor rather than applying another device’s settings or schedule.
- Identify the full model number and, if relevant, software version.
- Search its manual for terms such as pixel shift, screen shift, logo brightness, screen saver, pixel cleaning, screen optimization or pixel refresh.
- Check whether a feature is enabled, whether it works with your source or app, and what the manual says about power and timing.
- Let automatic care complete under the stated conditions; reserve long manual refresh procedures for the circumstances described by the manufacturer.
For a TV and a monitor, the practical prevention priorities are similar, but their feature sets and automatic-care instructions can differ. A TV may describe pixel cleaning and calibration in one way; a monitor guide may distinguish Screen Optimization from a separately started Pixel Refresh. Compare the specific features available, the conditions that trigger care and whether the model supports a manual operation. Do not compare their four-hour or other cycle timings as if those numbers measured which panel is more durable.
Best Value
The most useful routine is simple: avoid prolonged static images, use available protections, and allow the panel care built into the device to run as intended. Manufacturer timing figures describe maintenance behavior for particular products; they are not a guarantee against burn-in or a universal measure of OLED lifespan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a paused game or video cause OLED burn-in?
A paused image, game HUD or fixed menu is the kind of static content worth avoiding for prolonged periods, especially if it repeatedly appears in the same area. Resume playback, use a screen saver or turn the display off when you step away. The manufacturer guidance does not set a universal safe number of minutes.
Is temporary image retention the same as burn-in?
No. Temporary retention can leave a ghostlike image that fades. Burn-in is persistent and remains visible when other content is shown. If you notice a mark, test varied content and follow the troubleshooting steps for your exact model before concluding the panel has burn-in.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I manually run Pixel Refresh regularly?
No. Treat a manual refresh as a model-specific troubleshooting step, not a routine ritual. It may take more than an hour and is unavailable on some Samsung monitor models. Check the exact manual before starting it and let an active cycle finish.
Do OLED TVs and monitors all run panel cleaning every four hours?
No. LG USA Support describes automatic pixel cleaning after four cumulative hours for its cited TVs. Samsung US Support describes Screen Optimization after at least four cumulative hours for the OLED monitors covered by its guide. These are manufacturer-specific processes, not a universal OLED schedule.
Should I unplug my OLED display after turning it off?
Follow the device instructions. If the model requires power while off for automatic panel care, leave it connected and let the cycle complete. Avoid turning the display back on during an active operation.
What settings should I look for to reduce burn-in risk?
Check the exact model’s manual for Pixel Shift or Screen Shift, Logo Detection or Adjust Logo Brightness, screen saver, automatic dimming and panel-care options. Names, availability and behavior vary by model, software and region.
The Bottom Line
Reduce prolonged exposure to fixed images, use screen savers and available pixel-shift or logo-dimming features, and let your TV or monitor complete panel care under the conditions in its exact manual. Use manual refresh only when the manufacturer recommends it for your model; no one setting or cycle guarantees that burn-in cannot occur.
