How to Prevent Burn-In on a QD-OLED Monitor

To reduce burn-in risk on a QD-OLED monitor, avoid leaving bright, fixed content on screen for long unattended periods, enable the panel-care features available on your exact model, and let the monitor complete its prompted maintenance cycle without interruption. There is no universal refresh schedule or brightness setting: check your monitor’s manual for its menu names and instructions.

Why fixed content can be a problem

Burn-in or persistent image retention can develop when the same high-contrast elements remain in the same place over time. Samsung identifies static game interfaces as a concern, and Dell warns against leaving static images on its Alienware OLED monitors. A desktop taskbar, game HUD, spreadsheet, or application toolbar can all stay fixed while the rest of the image changes.

The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universally safe number of hours or a specific risk threshold. Reduce prolonged static display rather than relying on a timer that is not specified for your model.

Everyday habits that reduce static screen time

  • Set your operating system to turn off the display automatically when the computer is idle, or use a dynamic screensaver.
  • When stepping away, avoid leaving an unchanged desktop, game interface, or application visible for an extended period.
  • Use a comfortable brightness and enable logo-dimming or similar protections if your monitor provides them. Manufacturer guidance describes these protections but does not establish one brightness percentage suitable for every display.

Enable your monitor’s OLED-care features

Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and look for a section named OLED Care, Panel Care, Screen Optimization, or similar. Depending on the model, protections may include pixel shifting, reduced brightness for static logos, automatic optimization, or a manual pixel refresh. Not every monitor offers every feature, and menu labels and behavior vary.

Samsung, ASUS, AOC, Philips, Dell, and MSI describe different care features and workflows for their products. Use the manual or official support page for your exact model instead of copying a setting or routine from another monitor.

Let maintenance finish as directed

Some monitors prompt for maintenance after accumulated use; others run a cycle after shutdown. Follow the on-screen prompt and the model’s instructions. Samsung warns that turning the display on during Pixel Refresh cancels the cycle. ASUS says not to unplug or power on the display during Pixel Cleaning. Where the manufacturer directs you to keep the monitor connected to power and off, leave it that way until the process finishes.

If you notice an after-image

A temporary after-image and permanent burn-in are not interchangeable diagnoses. Follow the troubleshooting steps for your monitor. Samsung recommends Pixel Refresh for after-images and advises contacting service if the issue persists. ASUS advises leaving the monitor off for a period and using Pixel Cleaning according to its guidance. Avoid repeated refresh attempts that go beyond those instructions.

Check warranty terms for your exact model

Burn-in coverage, exclusions, and care requirements vary by product and region. Check the warranty and support documentation for your monitor, and follow any care instructions tied to its coverage. Do not assume that another model’s warranty terms apply.

Choosing a QD-OLED monitor for a static-heavy workload

If you are evaluating models, compare more than panel type. Consider which protections are included, how and when maintenance runs, whether the monitor must be off, and whether cycles can be deferred. Also check the warranty’s duration, burn-in coverage, exclusions, regional terms, and any required care practices. A workload that keeps desktop or application elements fixed for long periods makes these details especially relevant.
