How to Prevent Buffering in a 24/7 Worship Stream on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To prevent buffering, first identify whether frames are dropping between your encoder and YouTube or whether only some viewers are buffering. If OBS reports network drops, stabilize the church’s upload connection or lower the stream bitrate. If OBS is stable but viewers still buffer, consider their devices and connections—and whether a lower-bitrate stream would reach more of them.

First, identify where buffering starts

“Buffering” can describe two different problems. OBS’s dropped-frame counter helps diagnose the broadcaster’s connection to YouTube; viewer reports describe playback at the audience end. They need different fixes.

  • OBS network dropped frames or disconnections: the encoder may be unable to sustain its configured bitrate, or its connection to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable. OBS distinguishes network drops from encoding or rendering problems, so check which kind of frames are being lost before changing settings. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
  • OBS is stable, but viewers report buffering: investigate whether reports are limited to particular devices, locations, or internet connections. A stable outgoing stream does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. OBS discusses this audience-side distinction in its stream buffering guide.

For a 24/7 worship stream, make a change only after identifying which symptom it addresses. Lowering bitrate can help with an unstable upload or broaden playback access, but it reduces picture detail or may require a lower frame rate.

Choose a stream profile the connection can sustain

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the available internet connection and testing upload bitrate. Its bitrate figures are recommendations for sending a stream to YouTube—not proof that a particular connection can sustain that rate continuously. YouTube’s current guidance also recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations.

H.264 profile YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s stated encoder bitrate ranges on the guidance page accessed 2026-10-03; they are not guarantees of smooth transmission or playback. A connection must sustain the selected bitrate with room for fluctuations and other network traffic. Choose a conservative profile that works throughout a representative service, rather than one justified by a brief peak on a speed test.

OBS’s 2024 connection troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point for bitrate investigation, while emphasizing that the bitrate must fit stable upload speed. Treat that percentage as a starting point, not a guarantee. Measure over time, account for other traffic, and use the OBS dropped-frame counter and YouTube stream health to judge whether the profile is sustainable.

Troubleshoot OBS network drops in order

  1. Check the type of dropped frames. In OBS, inspect the dropped-frame counter and connection status. Rising network drops point to an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Do not treat encoding or rendering problems as network problems; follow the corresponding OBS indicators and troubleshoot that cause instead.
  2. Test upload stability, then reduce bitrate if needed. Run an upload test and compare the sustainable result with the configured video bitrate. If network drops continue, lower the video bitrate in OBS under Settings > Output, then test again. A one-time speed result does not establish that upload capacity will stay stable through a long broadcast.
  3. Use a wired connection for the encoder where possible. OBS says Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. Check the Ethernet cable, network adapter, router, and modem if the wired path is unreliable. A cable is worth replacing only if the setup needs a wired link or the existing cable may be faulty; it is not a universal fix.
  4. Check software and network-path interference. OBS lists VPNs, security software or firewalls, network-prioritization or “optimization” tools, and outdated network drivers as possible causes. Review recent changes and test safely within your church’s security policies. OBS also describes network optimizations and TCP pacing for supported Windows configurations; these are platform-specific options, not a substitute for diagnosing the connection.
  5. Use dynamic bitrate adjustment only as a fallback. OBS notes that dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate to reduce frame drops, but it does not repair the underlying connection problem and may reduce picture quality. If it prevents an interruption, continue investigating the root cause rather than treating the adjustment as a permanent cure.
  6. Escalate persistent problems to the ISP. If OBS troubleshooting does not resolve recurring connection issues, contact the internet service provider. Congestion or route changes may be outside the church’s control.

Test the full worship service, not just the encoder

YouTube recommends a pre-event test with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, followed by monitoring stream health and messages during the event. For a worship broadcast, rehearse the full service chain over the same internet path used on service day: camera movement, scene changes, graphics, audio, and switching. A static test does not reproduce the traffic and workflow of a live service.

  • Run a representative test after changing bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or network settings.
  • Watch OBS’s network dropped-frame count and connection status while the test runs.
  • Check YouTube’s stream health and messages before and during the event.
  • For continuous streaming, test under actual operating conditions and monitor after changes; a successful one-time test does not establish continuous reliability.

If only viewers are buffering

Ask affected viewers which device and network they are using, and compare reports from more than one connection. If OBS shows no network drops and YouTube reports a healthy stream, the issue may be limited to some viewers’ playback conditions rather than the church’s outgoing connection.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, which helps accommodate different devices and networks. Transcoding does not eliminate the need for a stable encoder-to-ingest connection, nor does it make every high-bitrate source stream suitable for every viewer. If reports persist across different viewers, test a lower-bitrate or lower-resolution profile and compare playback. Less demanding video can improve reach, at the cost of image detail or frame rate.
