To prevent black bars in a 24/7 YouTube cartoon stream, find where they enter the picture, then set the OBS canvas and output to the intended aspect ratio and frame the cartoon accordingly. If the cartoon and canvas have different shapes, preserve the full image with a designed background, or enlarge it and accept cropping. Avoid stretching unless distortion is acceptable. Check the final YouTube stream: bars may already be part of the video file, and bitrate changes will not remove them.
Find where the black bars come from
Black bars can be part of the cartoon file itself, or they can appear because the cartoon’s shape does not match the OBS canvas. Check the source video before changing scene settings; if the margins are already in the image, changing the canvas alone will not remove them.

- Open a representative frame from the cartoon file in a video player or editor and inspect its edges. If the black margins appear there, they are baked into the source image.
- In OBS, inspect the cartoon source in the preview. Look for unused canvas around the source, or for a mismatch between the source and canvas shapes.
- After adjusting the scene, inspect the actual YouTube player as well as the OBS preview. The encoded stream is the final check.
Set the OBS canvas and output to the intended shape
For a conventional widescreen stream, use a 16:9 base canvas and output resolution. OBS gives 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples of 16:9 resolutions in its Aspect Ratio Guide. The important point is that the canvas and output should have the intended matching aspect ratio; choosing a resolution does not by itself correct bars that are inside the cartoon.
In OBS, open Settings > Video and check Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution. Set both to the intended shape, such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720 for 16:9. Then return to the scene preview and resize and position the cartoon source to compose the frame.

Choose how to handle a mismatched cartoon
If the source and canvas do not share the same aspect ratio, there is no way to show every part of the image, fill the full canvas, and preserve the original geometry all at once. Choose which trade-off suits the cartoon:

Preserve the full cartoon
Fit the source within the canvas without changing its proportions. Use the remaining space for a background image, color, or overlay so the stream does not show empty bands. This keeps all the artwork visible, but the added space will not show the cartoon itself.

Fill the frame by cropping
Enlarge the source until it covers the canvas. This can remove bars caused by a shape mismatch, but some image content will move beyond the canvas and be cut off. Check the edges for clipped faces, captions, or other important details.
Stretch only if distortion is acceptable
Stretching can fill the canvas while retaining the whole image, but it changes the artwork’s geometry. OBS cautions that stretching mismatched content may warp or distort it; enlarging is an alternative, with cropping as the trade-off. Use stretching only when that visual distortion is acceptable.

Check source bounds and scaling in OBS
Once you have chosen a framing approach, select the cartoon source and adjust its size and position in the preview so it occupies the intended area. If you need a source-level adjustment, OBS documents a Scaling/Aspect Ratio Filter with a resolution setting for assigning a new resolution or aspect ratio. Use it deliberately: a scaling filter cannot make a mismatched image fill the frame without either unused space, cropping, or distortion.
Test the actual YouTube live output
Before relying on the continuous broadcast, test a representative section of the cartoon and inspect the result in YouTube’s player. OBS preview composition and the final live picture are separate checks. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Those encoder recommendations do not remove bars embedded in the source image; bitrate is not a framing control.

- Check the cartoon file itself for baked-in margins.
- Confirm the OBS canvas and output use the intended aspect ratio.
- Review the source bounds in the scene preview after resizing or applying a filter.
- Watch the YouTube player during a test, including scenes with movement and audio.
Troubleshooting black bars
Bars are visible in the video file before OBS
Cause: The margins are part of the source image. Fix: Crop or recompose the source before streaming, or use OBS framing to crop the margins. Recheck that cropping does not remove important artwork.

Cause: The source is smaller than the canvas or has a different aspect ratio. Fix: Resize and position it to fit, then either fill the leftover area with a background or overlay, enlarge and crop, or accept distortion from stretching.

The OBS preview looks right, but YouTube still shows bars
Cause: The source may contain baked-in bars, or the final output may not match the preview framing you intended. Fix: Inspect the file and the live player separately, then test the encoded output after correcting the source or scene. Do not try to solve framing by changing bitrate.
Important details disappear after filling the frame
Cause: The cartoon was enlarged beyond the canvas, cropping its edges. Fix: Reduce the scale to show the full image and fill the extra area with a background or overlay, or recompose the source with important details inside the visible frame.
