Apple Intelligence privacy protections limit how Apple processes requests, but they do not stop another person from reading a notification, Siri response, summary, or unlocked app on a device they can access.
Start with separate Apple Accounts
Family Sharing is not designed for one household-wide login. Apple’s model gives every person a separate Apple Account while allowing eligible subscriptions and purchases to be shared. Apple describes each member’s experience as personalized and private because each member uses their own account.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
On every iPhone, iPad and Mac, open the Apple Account area in Settings (or System Settings on Mac) and verify that the account belongs to the person who normally uses that device. Do not sign a spouse, child or guest into your Apple Account merely to share an app or subscription. A shared login can expose synced messages, mail, photos, notes, contacts, Safari data and other personal context independently of Apple Intelligence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet up Family Sharing without sharing credentials
- On the organizer’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family (the menu may be labeled Family Sharing on older system versions).
- Invite each person with their own Apple Account. If a child does not have an account, use the family setup flow to create a child account rather than reusing an adult’s login.
- On each member’s device, confirm that iCloud and Apple services show that member’s account, not the organizer’s account.
- Keep purchase sharing enabled only for the items your household wants to share. Purchase sharing does not require sharing private Apple Intelligence context.
If two people already use one account, create or assign separate accounts first, then sign each person into their own account. Check which iCloud data is present before removing the old login so that photos, contacts or documents are not deleted accidentally; make an independent backup and follow Apple’s account-change prompts.

Turn off Apple Intelligence summaries that can quote private text
Summaries are a visibility problem, not necessarily a data-processing problem. A short AI-generated sentence can reveal the subject of a message or an email to anyone who can see the screen. Review each summary feature separately; disabling one does not automatically disable the others.
Messages summaries
On an iPhone or iPad that other family members can reach, open Settings, find the Apple Intelligence or app-specific Messages settings, and turn off the option that summarizes Messages. On system versions that place the control under Notifications, open the Messages notification settings and disable its summarization toggle. Check the Messages setting after major iOS or iPadOS updates because Apple can reorganize these controls.
This prevents an AI-written digest from appearing where a normal message notification would otherwise be shown. It does not erase the conversation itself; protect the conversation with an app lock as described below.
Mail message-preview summaries
In Settings, open the Mail settings and disable the control for summarizing message previews. If Mail exposes the switch in its notification settings instead, turn it off there as well. This targets the short text shown in an alert, not the full message stored in Mail.
Notification Summaries
Open Settings > Notifications > Notification Summaries and turn off scheduled summaries on a family-accessible device. If you still want summaries for low-risk apps, leave the feature on globally and remove Messages, Mail, calendar and other sensitive apps from the scheduled list. A summary that arrives at a predictable time can be just as revealing as an immediate alert.

Priority Notifications
Review the Apple Intelligence notification controls and disable Priority Notifications if your device surfaces them. Priority treatment can place selected alerts more prominently, increasing the chance that private content is noticed. Treat this as a separate setting from scheduled Notification Summaries.
After changing these options, send a test message and an email from another account while the device is locked. Confirm that the lock screen shows no generated text and that no scheduled or priority digest appears. Test again for each person’s device; these switches are not automatically copied across a family.
Hide notification previews from the lock screen
Apple says notification previews can include message text from Messages and Mail, as well as details from calendar invitations. The most reliable household-wide setting is When Unlocked or Never.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews.
- Select When Unlocked to reveal content only after Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode succeeds, or select Never to suppress preview text even after an alert arrives.
- Return to the Notifications list, open each sensitive app and verify its own preview setting. Use the stricter per-app choice for Messages, Mail, Photos, Notes, health apps and work tools.
- Lock the screen and generate a test notification. Look for sender names, subject lines, message excerpts and invitation details, not just whether a banner appears.
When Unlocked preserves useful alerts while keeping their text hidden from someone who picks up the locked device. Never provides stronger protection on a phone left in a shared room, but you will need to open the app to identify the alert’s content.
Lock the apps that contain the original information
Notification settings protect the alert; an app lock protects the data behind it. Apple’s app-lock feature requires Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode before the app opens. Apple also states that information from a locked app is excluded from notification previews, search, Siri suggestions and call history.

Apply a lock
- On the Home Screen or in the App Library, touch and hold the app icon.
- Choose Require Face ID, Require Touch ID or the equivalent passcode option.
- Authenticate when prompted. The app remains visible, but opening it requires authentication.
- Lock each sensitive app separately. Typical candidates include Messages, Mail, Photos, Notes, Files, journal or health apps, and any work app whose notifications contain confidential text.
Locking is device-local. If the same messages or mail are available on a family iPad, Mac or older iPhone, repeat the lock there; securing the iPhone does not secure the copy on another device.

Understand what an app lock does not cover
- It does not remove information already copied into an unlocked screenshot, export, email or shared document.
- It does not protect a device while it is already unlocked and being used by someone else.
- It does not automatically lock every app in a category; choose each app that needs protection.
- It does not replace a strong device passcode. Anyone who knows that passcode can generally satisfy the authentication requirement.
Restrict Apple Intelligence on a child’s family-managed device
For a child’s device, use Family and Screen Time controls rather than relying on the child to keep settings private. Apple provides controls for Siri and Apple Intelligence, Writing Tools, image creation, web content and Intelligence Extensions.
Open the child’s controls
- On the family organizer’s device, open Settings > Family and select the child.
- Open the child’s Screen Time settings, then Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Open the section for Siri and Apple Intelligence (the exact grouping can vary by system version).
- Choose the Siri level appropriate for the child: Siri AI, Siri Classic or No Siri, where those options are presented.
- Review and restrict Writing Tools, Image Creation, web-content access and Intelligence Extensions, including extensions such as ChatGPT, according to your household rules.
Use No Siri when voice requests themselves are inappropriate on the device. Choose Siri Classic when the child needs basic voice commands without the newer AI features. Allowing Siri AI can be reasonable only when the child’s account, device passcode and notification privacy have already been configured.
What these family controls cover
| Control | What it limits | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Siri AI, Siri Classic or No Siri | Whether the child can use the corresponding Siri experience | Child’s family-managed device/account settings |
| Writing Tools | AI assistance for rewriting, proofreading and related text actions | Apps and text fields where the feature is available |
| Image Creation | Access to Apple’s generative image features | Supported features on the child’s device |
| Web Content | Web access associated with the child’s Screen Time rules | Child’s managed account and devices covered by those rules |
| Intelligence Extensions | Connections to optional external intelligence services | Feature access on the managed device |
Family-managed restrictions are different from an app lock: they govern what a child can use, while an app lock protects a particular person’s stored data. Use both when the device contains information that should not be visible to siblings or guests.
Stop Siri from answering on shared hardware
When several Apple devices hear “Siri,” the device that hears best or was used most recently may answer. A family member can therefore receive a response from the wrong device, even when the request was spoken near another person’s iPhone.

Mac: block responses while locked
On a Mac, open System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or the Siri pane on older macOS versions) and turn off Allow Siri when locked. With that option disabled, Siri will not respond while the Mac’s screen is locked. Keep the Mac locked whenever you leave it in a shared room.
iPhone and iPad: use the face-down behavior
On iPhone or iPad, place the device face down when you do not want it to respond to “Siri.” Apple documents this as a way to prevent the device from responding while it is positioned that way. This is a physical-use rule, not a replacement for account separation or app locks.
Reduce accidental cross-device responses
- Lock devices that are not actively being used.
- Keep only the intended device near the speaker when making a sensitive request.
- After a Siri response, check which device answered before assuming the request stayed on your personal hardware.
- Do not ask Siri to read private messages aloud in a room where another person can hear.
Know what Apple’s privacy architecture protects—and what it cannot
Apple says that in many cases its Apple Intelligence models run entirely on the device, so a task can be completed without data leaving that device. For requests that use Private Cloud Compute, Apple says the processing is performed only to fulfill the request, is not retained and is not accessible to Apple afterward.
Those statements describe how Apple’s systems handle request data. They do not make a visible screen private from a family member standing nearby. A person can still read a lock-screen preview, see a generated notification summary, hear Siri answer aloud or open an unlocked app. Local processing also does not prevent a synced account from displaying the same content on another device.
| Protection | Primary risk addressed | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Separate Apple Accounts | Cross-account syncing and shared personal context | Someone viewing a device that is already unlocked |
| Summary controls | AI-generated snippets exposing message or email meaning | Full content visible inside an unlocked app |
| Show Previews: When Unlocked/Never | Text visible on a locked screen | Content shown after authentication |
| App lock | Opening selected apps and their indexed content | Copies exported or displayed elsewhere; other devices unless separately locked |
| Family and Screen Time restrictions | A child’s access to Siri, AI tools, web content and extensions | Private data already available through another unrestricted account or device |
| Siri lock and face-down practices | Voice responses from unattended or shared hardware | Text someone can read directly from the screen |
Use the right control for the situation
Choose controls by the kind of exposure you are trying to prevent rather than turning on every setting blindly.
Best Value
- A sibling reads alerts on a locked phone: set Show Previews to Never, disable summaries and lock the underlying apps.
- A partner uses a shared iPad: verify separate Apple Accounts, lock Messages and Mail on that iPad, and repeat the settings there even if the iPhone is secure.
- A child invokes AI features: apply Screen Time restrictions for Siri and Apple Intelligence, Writing Tools, Image Creation, web content and Intelligence Extensions.
- A household Mac answers private voice requests: turn off Allow Siri when locked and keep the Mac locked when unattended.
- You are worried about Apple receiving request data: understand the on-device and Private Cloud Compute protections, then separately configure screen, account and app controls because processing privacy does not equal visibility privacy.
Troubleshoot leaks after changing the settings
A message still appears on the lock screen
Check both the global Settings > Notifications > Show Previews choice and the individual app’s notification settings. Then generate a new test notification while the device is locked. Existing notifications may remain in Notification Center until dismissed, so clear the old alert before judging the new configuration.
A summary appears even though Messages is disabled
Review Mail message-preview summaries, Notification Summaries and Priority Notifications independently. A different feature may be generating the text. Remove sensitive apps from scheduled summaries or disable the schedule entirely.
Private content appears on another family device
Check the Apple Account shown on both devices. If the same account is signed in, separate the accounts before changing individual privacy switches. If accounts are already separate, audit which apps sync through Family Sharing or other shared services and apply an app lock on every device that stores the content.
Siri answers from the wrong device
Move the unused device away, lock the Mac or place the iPhone/iPad face down, then repeat the request. Remember that the device that hears best or was used most recently may win the response.
A child can still use an AI feature
Reopen the child’s Screen Time profile and inspect each category: Siri level, Writing Tools, Image Creation, web content and Intelligence Extensions. Restrictions are account- and device-management settings; changing an adult’s device does not automatically change the child’s device.
Maintenance after an iOS, iPadOS or macOS update
Privacy settings can move when Apple changes menus or introduces a new intelligence feature. After a major update, perform a short audit on every shared or family-accessible device:
- Confirm the signed-in Apple Account and Family membership.
- Recheck Messages, Mail, Notification Summaries and Priority Notifications.
- Verify Show Previews and each sensitive app’s notification behavior from the lock screen.
- Confirm that locked apps still require authentication and are locked on every device that contains the data.
- Review the child’s Screen Time restrictions and Intelligence Extensions.
- Test Siri with the devices locked, unlocked and positioned near one another.
This audit distinguishes two different privacy questions: whether Apple’s systems can access request data, and whether another person can see or hear the result on household hardware. The second question is answered by account separation, summaries, previews, app locks, family restrictions and Siri controls.
