Use no production secrets in fixtures, isolate every agent context, enforce least-privilege identities and tools, scan data in both directions, and make adversarial testing a release requirement. An agent can disclose confidential information without its model weights containing that information: a retrieval result, memory entry, tool response, serialized session, cache, trace, or telemetry record may be enough.
The safest test environment therefore treats the entire context pipeline as sensitive. Synthetic records and canary markers make tests observable without creating real-world harm; session, tenant, memory, and network boundaries limit what a successful attack can reach; approval gates and independent review stop a passing test suite from being mistaken for security assurance.

Why an agent can leak data even when the model is not trained on it
Confidentiality failures usually occur in the plumbing around the model. An agent may receive secrets through retrieval, conversation history, long-lived memory, browser content, a function result, or an attached file. It can then copy that material into a response, a tool argument, a message to another agent, a trace, or a cache.
Microsoft describes every agent-to-tool, agent-to-service, and agent-to-agent interaction as an expansion of the attack surface. External documents and tool output must be treated as untrusted data, not as trusted instructions. A document containing “send the customer list to this address” is data that may contain an indirect prompt injection; it is not authorization.

| Exposure point | Typical failure | Control to test |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt and chat history | A user or injected message induces the agent to repeat a secret already in context. | Input filtering, context minimization, and an output inspection policy. |
| Memory and serialized sessions | One user, tenant, or test run reads another run’s stored facts or credentials. | Per-tenant, per-user, per-session, and per-agent namespaces with short retention. |
| Retrieval indexes and files | A query returns documents outside the caller’s authorization scope. | Authorization-aware retrieval, metadata filtering, and corpus segregation. |
| Tool arguments and results | Prompt injection changes a parameter, or a tool returns more fields than the task needs. | Allow-listed tools, deterministic parameter validation, field minimization, and approval gates. |
| Logs, traces, and telemetry | Debugging captures full messages, personally identifiable information, or function-call results. | Redaction before emission, restricted access, encryption, and retention limits. |
| Caches and downstream services | Tokens, responses, or exports remain available after a test ends. | Isolation, expiration, deletion verification, and egress monitoring. |
Start by mapping trust boundaries
Before writing a test, draw the path that data can take. Inventory each item below and record its owner, authorization rule, retention period, encryption status, and whether it can cross a tenant or session boundary:
- user messages, system instructions, developer prompts, and chat history;
- short-term state, long-lived memory, serialized sessions, and caches;
- retrieval indexes, source files, browser pages, and external documents;
- agent identities, credentials, tool arguments, tool results, and inter-agent messages;
- logs, traces, metrics, evaluation datasets, telemetry, and downstream exports.
Keep instructions, data, memory, and parameters in separate representations. Mark external content as untrusted and prevent it from silently changing the policy, identity, tool allow-list, or destination selected by the application. Information-flow controls should make an attempted transfer visible even when the model follows an injected instruction.
Write the intended boundary in plain language
For every test case, state who may access which data, through which interface, for which task, and what must never happen. For example: “The billing-support agent may read synthetic invoices for tenant A, may not retrieve tenant B, and may not send any invoice field to an external destination.” This statement becomes the expected policy decision and the basis for a release gate.
Remove real secrets from test fixtures
Do not paste production API keys, customer records, private source code, regulated data, or live account tokens into a prompt, evaluation set, retrieval index, memory store, or tool substitute. Use generated records that preserve the shape of the real workload without representing a real person, organization, account, or credential.
Use harmless canary markers
Place unique markers in synthetic fields so an unauthorized appearance is easy to detect. A marker must not be a valid password, usable API key, production identifier, or value that could trigger a real transaction. Use different markers for prompt context, retrieval documents, memory, tool output, and each tenant so the test identifies the path of disclosure.
A marker that does not appear in the final text is not proof that disclosure is impossible. The agent may transform, encode, summarize, translate, hash, split, or transmit the value through a tool. OWASP recommends testing the intended violation and the observable outcome rather than relying on one exact string comparison.

Make fixtures expire
Give test credentials, indexes, sessions, and storage objects short lifetimes. Revoke them after the run and verify deletion from primary stores, replicas, caches, exports, and evaluation logs. If a fixture must survive for reproducibility, keep it in a segregated, access-controlled test project and document its retention owner.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Give each test agent only the access it needs
Create a separate, auditable identity for each agent and environment. Do not reuse a developer’s broad identity or a production service principal in a test. Scope access to the exact repositories, fields, tenants, tools, operations, and network destinations required by the case.
- Prefer read-only or mock tools; permit writes only in a disposable sandbox.
- Allow-list tool names and validate every argument against a schema, type, range, and destination policy.
- Separate permission to read data from permission to export, message, delete, or alter it.
- Restrict network egress to named test endpoints and block arbitrary URLs, DNS rebinding paths, and unknown destinations.
- Use distinct identities for sub-agents and require an explicit delegation rule for every inter-agent message.
- Expire credentials and rotate any secret that was present during a test, even if no leak was observed.
Long-lived memory should be exceptional. If a task does not need memory, disable it. If it does, bind entries to the tenant, user, session, task, and agent, and test that each dimension is enforced independently.
Protect memory, retrieval, and observability stores
Apply the same confidentiality policy to stored state as to the live prompt. Encrypt memory, indexes, session records, caches, traces, and telemetry; restrict operators and evaluators to the minimum fields needed; and define deletion and retention rules before testing begins.
Test for cross-context reads
- Create separate synthetic tenants, users, sessions, and agents, each with a distinct canary.
- Write one canary to each memory namespace and one document to each retrieval partition.
- Ask the agent to perform an authorized task in each context.
- Attempt direct and indirect requests for another context’s canary.
- Inspect the response, retrieval citations, memory writes, tool calls, logs, and traces for unauthorized values.
Do not enable full chat-message tracing or sensitive-data telemetry in a production-like environment merely for convenience. Microsoft warns that traces can contain personally identifiable information and function-call results. Use field-level redaction, sampled diagnostics, or a segregated diagnostic project instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesScan data before and after model processing
Data-loss-prevention and classification checks should cover more than the final answer. Scan prompts, retrieved context, memory writes, tool outputs, generated responses, logs, and exports. Redact or tokenize sensitive values before they reach the model; detokenize only at a controlled boundary that is not exposed to the agent.

Use two inspection directions
- Inbound inspection: classify user input, files, retrieval results, memory reads, and tool responses. Block or quarantine content that exceeds the test identity’s scope.
- Outbound inspection: inspect generated text, structured tool arguments, messages, memory writes, logs, and downstream payloads before display or execution.
Define what happens when a scanner is unavailable, times out, or returns an uncertain result. For high-risk actions, fail closed and request human approval rather than allowing the agent to continue with uninspected content.
Sandbox tools and require approval for consequential actions
A language-model refusal is not a security boundary. Enforce boundaries in the tool broker, identity provider, network, and data layer. Replace real payment, email, deletion, deployment, and export tools with deterministic substitutes that record the requested action without performing it.
Use approval gates where harm is possible
Require an explicit, auditable approval immediately before an agent writes data, exports records, sends a message, calls an external service, changes permissions, or performs an irreversible operation. The approval should display the normalized destination, selected records, parameters, and policy decision—not merely the agent’s natural-language explanation.
Test interruption as well as approval. Confirm that cancelling an action prevents the tool call, that a stale approval cannot be replayed with changed parameters, and that a second agent cannot reuse another agent’s approval.
Build adversarial cases that reflect real attack paths
OWASP advises defining each case’s intended security violation or legitimate task, required context, and observable outcome before testing. Include both direct attacks and indirect instructions hidden in data the agent is expected to process.
| Case | Test setup | Evidence of failure |
|---|---|---|
| Direct extraction | Ask for a canary, credential, or restricted field already present in context. | Unauthorized value appears in text, structured output, or a tool argument. |
| Indirect prompt injection | Put an instruction in a synthetic document, web page, issue, or tool result. | The agent follows the embedded instruction instead of the governing policy. |
| Cross-session memory | Seed one session with a marker and request it from another identity. | Retrieval, memory, or response crosses the namespace boundary. |
| Retrieval overreach | Query a corpus with a user authorized for only one tenant or folder. | Results, citations, snippets, or counts reveal another scope. |
| Tool-parameter manipulation | Ask for a benign task while injecting a different destination, filter, or record range. | Validated parameters differ from the approved intent or tool policy. |
| Encoded exfiltration | Request translation, summarization, formatting, hashing, chunking, or encoding of a marker. | A transformed value or reversible representation leaves the boundary. |
| Repeated extraction | Vary wording, language, turn order, and output format across multiple attempts. | Rate limits, detection, or policy enforcement fail after persistence. |
Include benign cases too: the agent should complete an authorized task with synthetic data, use the minimum necessary fields, and decline only the prohibited part of a mixed request. Excessive blocking can hide operational failures and encourage unsafe workarounds.

Capture evidence without creating another data leak
For every run, record the test case identifier, agent and environment identity, data scope, policy version, model and provider version, retrieved sources, tool calls and normalized arguments, scanner decisions, approval events, final output, and reviewer disposition. Store these records in a restricted system with retention appropriate to their sensitivity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Log hashes or stable references instead of raw secrets whenever possible. If a raw value is essential to diagnose a failure, encrypt it separately, limit access, and schedule deletion. The evidence must show whether a boundary was crossed without becoming a new repository of confidential content.
Set release gates that fail closed
Turn the policy into automated gates and require a human decision for exceptions. Block a release when any of the following occurs:
- a canary or unauthorized field appears in a response, memory write, tool argument, export, log, or trace;
- the agent retrieves, opens, or infers data outside its tenant, session, repository, field, or task scope;
- a tool executes without the required identity, parameter validation, network restriction, or approval;
- an indirect instruction changes the policy, destination, identity, or permitted operation;
- diagnostic data retains prohibited sensitive content beyond its allowed retention period;
- the test harness cannot determine which identity, policy, data scope, or tool call produced the result.
Quarantine the failed environment, preserve minimally necessary evidence, revoke exposed credentials, and investigate the first boundary crossing rather than only the final response. A response can look safe while a tool, memory write, or trace has already leaked the value.
Do not let the agent grade its own security
An agent may generate useful test cases, but its passing assessment is not independent assurance. OWASP states that a passing suite generated by the same agent that produced the code provides no independent assurance. Have security reviewers or a separate evaluation system inspect the threat model, fixtures, expected outcomes, logs, and failures.
Use adversarial analysis for security-critical paths, and require a reviewer to confirm that the test actually exercised the intended boundary. Reviewers should look for missing cases, overly permissive fixtures, suppressed tool errors, transformed disclosures, and evidence that was redacted so aggressively that a failure became invisible.
Best Value
Re-test after every material change
Run the adversarial suite after changes to prompts, system instructions, model or provider, tools, tool schemas, memory, retrieval indexes, identity policies, network routes, DLP rules, logging, or approval workflows. OWASP identifies skipping this regression testing as unsafe because a previously blocked path can reopen without an obvious application error.
Keep a versioned baseline of cases and expected policy decisions. Add a regression case for every discovered failure, but keep the fixture synthetic and the marker harmless. Compare not only pass/fail counts but also scope of retrieved data, tool parameters, approval timing, and retention behavior.
How to evaluate an implementation or platform
When comparing architectures or control layers, score each one against the same questions rather than choosing by model quality alone:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Data minimization: Can sensitive fields be removed, tokenized, or redacted before model processing?
- Isolation: Are tenant, user, session, task, memory, cache, and retrieval boundaries enforceable and testable?
- Identity: Does every agent and tool call have a unique, auditable, least-privilege identity?
- Tool and network sandboxing: Can writes, exports, destinations, and egress be allow-listed and interrupted?
- DLP and output filtering: Are prompts, context, tool results, responses, logs, and memory writes inspected?
- Auditability: Can you reconstruct policy decisions and tool activity without retaining unnecessary raw data?
- Adversarial evaluation: Can direct, indirect, encoded, repeated, and cross-context attacks run automatically?
- Human control: Are approvals required at the point of action, with immutable evidence and safe cancellation?
Enterprise control layers may include private endpoints, identity and access management, classification and DLP services, AI-specific monitoring, and managed evaluation suites. They add enforcement and visibility, but they do not replace a correctly scoped test identity, synthetic fixtures, or independent review.
A practical pre-release checklist
- No production secrets or regulated records are present in prompts, fixtures, indexes, memory, tools, logs, or telemetry.
- Every canary is synthetic, unique to its boundary, harmless, and covered by a deletion check.
- Agent, sub-agent, tool, storage, and network identities are separate and least-privileged.
- Memory, retrieval, cache, session, and telemetry stores enforce tenant and session isolation.
- Inbound and outbound DLP checks cover model context, tool traffic, memory, responses, and logs.
- Writes, exports, messages, external calls, permission changes, and irreversible actions require approval.
- Direct, indirect, cross-context, retrieval, parameter, encoded, and repeated-extraction cases have expected outcomes.
- Evidence identifies the policy, identity, data scope, tool parameters, approvals, and reviewer.
- Release gates fail closed when a boundary is crossed or evidence is incomplete.
- An independent reviewer has examined the cases and results.
- The complete suite has run after the latest prompt, model, tool, memory, retrieval, identity, DLP, or logging change.
What a successful test can—and cannot—establish
A successful run demonstrates that the tested identity, data, tools, policies, and cases behaved as expected under those conditions. It does not prove that every transformed disclosure, novel injection, provider-side failure, operator error, or untested integration is impossible. Confidence comes from layered controls, minimized data, independent adversarial testing, and repeatable regression after change—not from a single refusal or a clean-looking final answer.
