There is no dependable yellowing timetable
Cases are exposed to different amounts of sun, heat, sweat and chemicals, and manufacturers do not provide a reliable universal number of days or months before yellowing. Treat any fixed “lifespan” claim as an estimate unless it identifies the material, test conditions and measurement method.
What you can do to slow yellowing
Reduce direct ultraviolet exposure
- Do not leave the phone and case in direct sunlight on a dashboard, windowsill or outdoor table when you can move them to shade.
- Use a pocket, bag or shaded surface for long periods outdoors.
- Do not assume that a clear case blocks enough ultraviolet light to prevent aging; transparency and UV resistance are different properties.
These steps reduce one source of oxidation; they cannot guarantee that a TPU case will remain clear indefinitely.
Keep the case away from high heat
OtterBox advises keeping cases away from high heat, including very hot water, because heat can accelerate degradation. Avoid placing a cased phone on a hot appliance, in a parked car, beside a heater or against another surface that is noticeably hot. Let the phone cool naturally before washing the case, and use lukewarm rather than very hot water.

Wipe cooking oil, cosmetics, sunscreen, makeup and colored drinks from the case as soon as practical. Huawei recommends a clean or lint-free cloth dampened with water for greasy smudges. Blot or wipe gently instead of grinding particles across the surface.
Keep sweat and grime from accumulating
After exercise or extended outdoor use, wipe the case and let it dry before putting the phone away. Pay attention to the corners, buttons and seam between a flexible bumper and a rigid back, where residue can remain trapped.
How to clean a clear phone case safely

- Remove the phone. Take the case off completely so water and soap cannot reach ports, speakers or buttons.
- Rinse with lukewarm water. Use water that feels comfortably warm, never very hot. Hot water can accelerate material degradation.
- Apply a small amount of mild soap. Work it over the case with your fingers or a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Clean both the inside and outside, including corners and cutouts.
- Rinse away all soap. Residue can leave a film that looks cloudy or attracts more dirt.
- Dry completely. Pat with a clean towel and allow the case to air-dry before reinstalling it. Do not trap moisture between the case and phone.
- Inspect under neutral light. If the case is still uniformly yellow after residue is gone, the color is likely in the material rather than on it.
What not to use
Do not treat abrasive scrubbing, strong solvents, bleach, acetone or unverified “de-yellowing” mixtures as established solutions. Can cleaning reverse yellowing?
Only sometimes, and only when the visible color comes from removable residue. A greasy film, makeup or dirt may disappear after washing. Mous states that the yellowing it discusses is a chemical change and therefore cannot be cleaned off. OtterBox similarly notes that cleaning can reduce external discoloration but does not reverse established degradation.
A practical test is to wash the case once using the method above, dry it fully and compare areas that were covered by the phone with areas exposed to light. No material choice guarantees a permanently clear case. The useful comparison is how each design handles flexibility, layers and disclosed resistance features, not a promised number of years.
