If a child may be in immediate danger, call local emergency services or law enforcement now. Otherwise, preserve the original phone, account, conversation and message context, document what you saw and how you handled it, and ask investigators for instructions. A screenshot is a useful record of what appeared on a screen at a particular moment, but it may omit the underlying message data, account records, metadata, deleted material and surrounding context. It should normally supplement—not replace—the original source.
Do not investigate or confront a suspected abuser, circulate suspected child sexual abuse material (CSAM), or upload potentially illegal images to a screenshot service. If CSAM may be present, stop copying or forwarding it and follow law-enforcement or child-protection instructions.

What to do first
- Protect the child. Move to safety and contact emergency services or law enforcement if there is an immediate threat.
- Leave the source in place. Do not delete messages, log out, reset a phone, uninstall an app, change passwords, or edit the account unless an investigator tells you to.
- Record your observations. Write down the platform, account or profile name, visible sender and recipient identifiers, displayed date and time, time zone if known, URL or location in the app, and how you reached the material.
- Contact the assigned investigator promptly. Ask whether they want you to make screenshots, preserve a device, provide an account export, or take no further action.
Visible names, profile photos or telephone numbers can be useful leads, but they do not by themselves prove who controlled an account. Avoid drawing conclusions about identity or authenticity.

What a screenshot proves—and what it does not
A visible rendering
A screenshot records pixels shown by an app or browser at one moment. It can show wording, images, a profile label, a displayed time, and part of the conversation. It does not inherently preserve the original database record, server-side timestamps, message headers, edit history, deleted content, device metadata, account-registration data or the complete conversation.

Context and sequence matter
A single cropped message can be misunderstood. If an investigator asks you to capture the screen, include enough surrounding conversation or page context to show the sequence and the account indicators that are actually visible. Interfaces differ, and there is no universal civilian rule requiring a particular set of fields. Keep the source message and device available even after making a capture.
Authenticity and admissibility are decisions for investigators and courts
Do not promise that a screenshot is authentic or automatically admissible. Its weight can depend on who supplied it, how it was obtained, whether the original still exists, whether the file was altered, and whether other records corroborate it. Investigators may seek native communications, provider records, device data or witness testimony through appropriate legal process.
How do I preserve screenshots as evidence?
1. Preserve the original device and account
Keep the phone, tablet or computer in the condition in which you found it. Do not browse through unrelated conversations, trigger disappearing-message timers, forward the material, or attempt password bypasses. Do not seize or isolate another person’s device. Mobile-device handling can change data or cause loss; trained examiners should follow agency procedures.
2. Capture only what you are asked to capture
If an investigator directs you to make a screenshot, use the device’s normal capture function and retain the untouched original file. Do not crop, annotate, add arrows, adjust colors, remove notifications or combine images into a new “clean” file. If you need a presentation copy, keep it separate and never discard the unmodified capture.
3. Make the capture understandable
Where the interface permits, capture the account or profile label, visible sender and recipient identifiers, date or time indicators, and enough preceding and following messages to establish sequence. Note anything that is not visible, such as a missing timestamp or truncated username. Do not keep scrolling or opening unrelated content merely to obtain more detail.
4. Write a contemporaneous note
In a separate note, record the device make and model if known, the app or website, account name, the date and time you viewed and captured the material, the time zone, your location if relevant, the steps you took, and anyone present. Describe what you saw without guessing who authored it or whether it was edited.

5. Preserve the file safely
Keep the original capture in a restricted location. Avoid messaging it to friends, posting it to social media, or placing it in an automatically shared photo album. Tell investigators exactly where the original file and device are stored. If your agency gives you a secure upload method, use that method rather than ordinary consumer sharing.

Keep the original messages, conversation, account and device whenever possible. Digital-forensics practice aims to preserve evidence in its most original form. A screenshot is a supplementary rendering; native message data can contain fields and relationships that are invisible on screen.
| Evidence form | What it preserves well | Important limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshot | What was visibly displayed, including visible wording and interface context | May omit native data, metadata, deleted material and full context | Immediate visual record while the source remains available |
| Original device and app data | Potentially broader message history, local metadata and account state | Handling can alter or destroy data; acquisition requires trained personnel | Forensic examination under agency procedure |
| Provider-held records | Server-side account, message or access records that the provider still retains | Availability and scope vary; lawful process is required | Investigator request, subpoena, warrant or other applicable process |
| Witness note | How the material was found, viewed and handled | It is a recollection, not the underlying communication | Provenance and context for investigators |
Use the screenshot, note and original source together. The combination allows investigators to compare the visible rendering with native or provider-held information.
What should I do with the phone or account before police see it?
Keep it available and unchanged
- Keep the device charged only as needed for safety; do not experiment with settings.
- Do not reset, update, unlock, root, jailbreak or factory-restore it.
- Do not delete an app, clear its cache, enable disappearing messages or change retention settings.
- Do not sign in on a different device just to look for more messages.
- Do not contact the suspected sender to test, threaten or negotiate.
Let investigators control acquisition
NIST’s mobile-device guidance warns that improper handling can cause digital-data loss. A trained examiner can select a preservation and acquisition method that follows the agency’s rules. A general article cannot safely prescribe forensic extraction, network isolation, password recovery or account-access steps for a particular phone.
Separate personal safety from evidence handling
If preserving a device could expose a child or caregiver to danger, prioritize safety and tell law enforcement what you did. Do not delay an emergency call while trying to make a perfect capture.

Investigators generally build provenance from multiple sources rather than relying on a visible username alone. They may document who supplied the device or file, acquire native data under agency procedure, compare timestamps and conversation sequence, and request provider-held records through appropriate legal process. A formal report should explain what was obtained, when, by whom and by what method.
Chain of custody
NIST says evidence handlers should prevent compromise, contamination and degradation and track chain of custody. Keep a simple handling log:
Date/time (with time zone) | Person | Device or file | Action | Storage or transfer location | Signature or reference
For each handoff, record who had the item, when custody changed, what was done and where it went. Store files with access limited to people who need them. Do not rename or re-encode the only copy; if an authorized examiner makes a working copy, retain the original and document the process.
Native format and formal reports
DOJ Justice Manual § 9-5.004 directs federal prosecution-team members to preserve substantive electronic communications in native electronic format when feasible and to record substantive case information in formal reports. That is federal prosecution-team guidance, not a civilian command, but it explains why investigators may request the original export or device instead of a screenshot alone.
Provider preservation and the CyberTipline
Under the 2023 U.S. Code edition of 18 U.S.C. § 2258A(h)(1), a completed provider submission of a report to NCMEC’s CyberTipline is treated as a request to preserve the contents provided for 90 days. The provision also addresses reasonably accessible commingled visual depictions, data or digital files that may provide context, and requires secure holding with access limited to what is necessary. It does not replace or interfere with separate authority under 18 U.S.C. § 2703.
This is a specific statutory rule for provider submissions under that section—not a guarantee that every public tip, account report or platform message will remain available. Current law and the case-specific process should be confirmed by investigators or counsel. A member of the public should report through the appropriate authority and follow its instructions rather than assuming a preservation period applies.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
| Mistake | Why it creates risk | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Cropping or annotating the only screenshot | Removes context and makes the original state difficult to assess | Keep an untouched original; make any presentation copy separately |
| Forwarding messages to friends or posting them | Spreads sensitive material and can alter metadata or privacy | Give it only to investigators through an approved channel |
| Deleting the account or blocking the sender immediately | May trigger deletion or remove access to relevant context | Ask law enforcement what account-safety steps are appropriate |
| Trying forensic apps or password bypasses | Can change or destroy data and may be unlawful | Stop and wait for a trained examiner |
| Assuming a username proves identity | Accounts can be shared, spoofed or compromised | Record the identifier as displayed and let investigators corroborate it |
| Uploading suspected CSAM to a screenshot or storage service | May create additional illegal copies and expose a child | Do not copy or upload; report and follow official instructions |
Secure storage and authorized working copies
For a family or witness, the safest course is usually to keep the device and untouched files private and transfer them only through an investigator’s approved process. A physical external drive is not, by itself, a chain-of-custody solution and is not necessary for every household.
Rank #4
Authorized evidence handlers may use agency-approved storage media for a documented working copy. California POST’s glossary describes external drives as commonly used for backups and discusses hash values and EXIF data; those technical concepts support documentation but do not turn a consumer backup into proof of authenticity. Follow your agency’s current policy for hashing, encryption, access control and retention.
Troubleshooting: when preservation goes wrong
The message disappeared
Write down when you last saw it, what device and account displayed it, and what action preceded its disappearance. Do not guess at missing text. Tell investigators immediately; they can assess whether a provider request or device examination is appropriate.
The app shows no timestamp
Record that the timestamp was not visible and note the device clock and time zone only as observations. Do not add a timestamp to the image. Investigators can compare other records.
The screenshot is blurry or incomplete
Keep the original blurry file. If the source is still available and an investigator requests another capture, make a second untouched capture with the relevant context visible. Do not replace the first file.
The phone is locked or nearly out of power
Do not attempt repeated passcodes or bypass tools. Tell law enforcement the device state and follow its instructions about power and transport.

For ordinary, lawful web pages—not private chats or suspected CSAM—ScreenshotNeo can make a one-call capture. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Do not send confidential evidence or potentially illegal material to any third-party API unless investigators expressly authorize that method.

Questions investigators and caregivers commonly ask
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I print screenshots for police?
Keep the original digital files and device first. Ask the investigator whether a printout is useful; printing should be an additional copy, not a replacement.
Can I ask the platform to delete an abusive account?
Do not change or delete the account before speaking with law enforcement unless safety requires it. Investigators can advise on reporting and preservation steps.
What if the child sent the messages themselves?
Preserve the child’s device and account without interrogating or coaching the child. Arrange a trained interview through child-protection or law-enforcement professionals.
