A durable PC-game archive is more than a copied installer. Keep the exact edition you acquired, the files needed to install and update it, its manuals and readme files, and a short record of the system and settings that make it work. Store a separate copy away from your gaming computer, label every component, and record launcher, DRM, patch, and operating-system dependencies. That combination gives you a realistic path to reinstalling a delisted or aging game without relying on memory or a single storefront.
What a useful PC-game preservation set contains
Preservation means retaining enough lawful source material and context to identify, install, configure, and use one particular edition later. The “game” in your archive may include several pieces:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The original disc and any printed manual, or the complete installer and distribution files you lawfully acquired.
- Official patches, expansion installers, language packs, bonus content, and configuration utilities that belong to that edition.
- Readme files, errata, patch notes, license information, and publisher documentation.
- A manifest describing the edition, source, build, files, requirements, and known compatibility workarounds.
- A second copy on independent storage, separate from the computer used for play.
This is not permission to redistribute copyrighted game files. Ownership of a copy and permission to share copies are different questions, and the rules for making or circumventing a copy vary by jurisdiction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches1. Identify the exact edition before copying anything
Preserve the version you actually own, not a generic title name. Re-releases can change executable files, language support, soundtrack licensing, DRM, included patches, or operating-system behavior. A label such as “Game Name” is therefore inadequate if several editions exist.

Record these identity fields
- Title and edition: Include subtitles, collector or budget designation, expansion bundles, and whether it is a remaster or original release.
- Publisher and developer: Add both when known; companies and rights holders can differ between editions.
- Distribution source: Note the physical publisher, storefront, subscription, download portal, or other lawful source.
- Language and region: A regional build may contain different files, censorship, manuals, or activation rules.
- Release, build, and patch identifiers: Copy the version number shown by the installer, executable, launcher, or readme. If no number is shown, write “not stated” and record where you looked.
- Acquisition date: Use the date you bought, downloaded, or copied the material.
- Ownership records: Keep receipts, product keys, registration details, or account information with the archive, while protecting passwords and personal data.
Do not call a later compilation the original release. If you keep more than one edition, give each its own folder and manifest so that patches and compatibility notes cannot be mixed.
2. Retain the most useful lawful source files
For a digital purchase, retain the actual installer or distribution package supplied to you, rather than only a shortcut to a launcher. Save every installer component, split archive, language file, expansion, and update that you are entitled to access. For a disc purchase, keep the original disc, case information, manual, and product key in a safe place. If you create a digital image of physical media, first check the copying and circumvention rules where you live.
Use a preservation hierarchy
The Library of Congress lists this preference order for software and video-game content:
- Uncompiled source code.
- A gold master build.
- A distribution file, such as an iOS App Store package (IPA), Android package (APK), or Windows executable.
Most home collectors will not have source code or a gold master. A lawfully obtained distribution file or the original retail media is the practical target. The hierarchy is an archival format preference, not a claim that consumers can obtain proprietary source code.
Capture installers before a storefront changes
Copy the installer files while your account still lets you download them. Keep the original filenames and directory structure when possible. If a launcher stores an offline installer in a cache, identify the complete set of files needed by that edition; copying only a desktop shortcut or a small downloader will not create an independent installer.
Save official patches in installation order and write down whether each patch is cumulative or requires an earlier version. Include optional updates only when you know which edition they target. A patch for a remaster may not apply to the original executable even when the game title is identical.
Keep physical material usable
Store discs vertically in protective cases, away from heat, moisture, direct sunlight, and pressure. Keep manuals, serial labels, and foldout maps with the corresponding disc. If a disc has multiple volumes, label them “Disc 1 of 3,” and retain the original order. A digital copy can supplement physical media, but it does not remove the need to check whether a disc check, activation server, or obsolete driver is still required.
3. Preserve documentation and metadata beside the files
Bytes without context are difficult to identify and may be impossible to operate years later. Put a plain-text or HTML readme in the top-level folder and keep documentation next to the installer, not in a separate location that can become detached.

Recommended manifest fields
- Title, edition, publisher, developer, language, region, and distribution source.
- Release date or build identifier, patch level, and the date the archive was created.
- Installer filenames, file sizes, and any required serial number or product-key location.
- Manuals, readme files, errata, patch notes, add-ons, and expansion installers included.
- Supported operating systems and whether the game is 32-bit, 64-bit, or dependent on older runtime components.
- Launcher, account, DRM, disc-check, activation, or external-service requirements.
- Hardware assumptions such as graphics API, resolution, display mode, audio device, controller, and input mapping.
- Configuration files, wrappers, compatibility layers, emulators, or community patches used, including their version and source.
- Test date, tester, machine or virtual machine description, operating-system build, and result.
- Rights information and any restrictions printed in the license or supplied documentation.
The Library of Congress recommends descriptive information such as title, creator, creation date, place of publication, publisher or producer, distributor, rights information, and identifiers when known. It also notes that an operating-system copy as a disk image may be needed for some institutional submissions when software cannot run on a commonly available operating system. That institutional guidance should not be treated as a requirement for every home archive or as legal advice about copying an operating system.
A practical folder layout

checksums.txt
01-Original-Media-or-Installer/
02-Official-Patches/
03-Manuals-and-Documentation/

Use names that include the edition and version, such as GameTitle_OriginalDVD_EN_v1.00 or Patch_1.03_cumulative. Do not rename an executable in a way that hides its original name; add a descriptive prefix or record the original filename in the manifest.
4. Make an independent backup and label it
Keep the retained files off the computer used for everyday play. A separate external USB hard drive is one mass-storage category the Library of Congress lists as acceptable for preservation submissions. That reference does not prescribe a consumer capacity, brand, drive type, cloud service, backup interval, or checksum schedule, so choose those according to the size and value of your collection.

Label the physical and logical copies
- Give the drive or disc case an archive name and an inventory number.
- Record the game title, exact edition, source, language, and highest included patch.
- Write the archive date and the location of the manifest.
- Keep a separate inventory listing which games are on which medium.
Do not rely on a single external drive. A drive can fail, be lost, or be damaged at the same time as the gaming PC. A second copy in a different physical location reduces that single-point risk. The source material establishes the usefulness of separate mass storage; it does not establish a particular redundancy formula, so document the arrangement you can maintain consistently.
Use checksums as an audit aid
You may record a cryptographic checksum for each installer and patch. In checksums.txt, include the algorithm, filename, and date calculated. A checksum proves that a file matches the value you recorded; it does not prove that the file is authentic unless you compare it with a trustworthy reference value from the publisher or another reliable record. Recalculate the values after moving files to a new disk and investigate any mismatch before deleting the older copy.
5. Write compatibility notes someone can reproduce
A compatibility note should let a future you—or another person who has permission to use the copy—repeat the setup. “Works on my PC” is not enough. Record what was tested, when, and how.
Operating system and architecture
- Write the operating system edition and build, not just “Windows.”
- State whether the game is 32-bit or 64-bit and whether a 32-bit subsystem is required.
- Note administrator privileges, installation paths, runtime libraries, or legacy components needed.
- Record whether compatibility mode, high-DPI overrides, windowed mode, or “run as administrator” was enabled.
Graphics, audio, and input
- Record graphics API assumptions, renderer selection, resolution, refresh rate, aspect ratio, and display mode.
- Note graphics-driver behavior, shader or texture fixes, and whether a modern driver changed the original rendering.
- List audio device settings, MIDI or surround requirements, and any sound wrapper used.
- Describe controller model, keyboard layout, key bindings, and dead-zone or force-feedback settings.
DRM, launchers, and online dependencies
- State whether installation requires an account or a launcher and whether the installed game starts without it.
- Document disc checks, product-key activation, offline activation limits, and authentication servers if known.
- Record any multiplayer, leaderboard, cloud-save, or external-service dependency separately from single-player play.
- Write the last date on which an online requirement was verified; services can change without changing the game files.
Testing standard
For each test, record the date, tester, machine, operating-system build, game version, procedure, and result. A forum post or an old wiki entry can suggest a workaround, but it is not evidence that your exact edition works. PCGamingWiki pages, for example, expose fields for source, DRM, notes, keys, and operating systems. Use such community pages as leads, then verify the information against the installer, publisher or developer documentation, and the exact version in your archive.
Windows updates and graphics-driver changes can affect compatibility over time. A note that says “tested successfully on Windows 11 build X with driver Y” is more useful than a permanent claim that the game “supports Windows 11.”

How do I back up my PC games?
Use this repeatable process for each title:
- Inventory the edition, source, language, build, patches, keys, and documentation.
- Copy the complete lawful installer or distribution files, or secure the original physical media and make any permitted archival copy.
- Place manuals, readmes, patch notes, and your manifest in the same archive.
- Install or launch the game once, if practical, and record the exact steps, settings, and errors.
- Copy configuration files and save games only when you have permission to retain them and have documented their location.
- Create checksums for the files you want to audit and record the algorithm.
- Copy the finished folder to separate storage, verify that it opens, and update the inventory.
- Periodically read the manifest and test a representative title after moving the archive to new storage.
Do not delete the original source immediately after making a backup. Verify the independent copy first, and keep at least one known-good copy until the replacement has been checked.
How do I reinstall a game without the launcher?
This is possible only when the edition includes a self-contained installer or an offline installation path. A launcher that merely downloads files is not an offline installer.
- Open the manifest and confirm the edition, language, installer sequence, and highest compatible patch.
- Disconnecting from the internet is optional; do it only after checking whether the installer requires online activation. Do not assume that offline installation bypasses DRM.
- Run the preserved installer from a local disk and choose a documented installation path.
- Apply official patches in the recorded order. Keep a copy of the unpatched installer so you can reproduce the original state.
- Install any documented runtime, wrapper, or compatibility component from the preserved tools folder, checking its version and license.
- Use the recorded configuration settings and test a save, a new game, audio, input, and a representative level.
- If activation or a launcher is required, follow the edition’s lawful account and offline-activation procedure. If the service no longer exists, do not substitute an unauthorized download or crack.
If the archive contains only a shortcut, a partial cache, or a launcher that has to contact a server, it does not provide a guaranteed launcher-free reinstall. Update the manifest to state that limitation rather than implying that the game is fully preserved.
How do I get an old PC game running on Windows 11?
Start with the exact edition and the compatibility notes, then change one variable at a time. A modern operating system can expose problems caused by 16-bit installers, old DRM drivers, obsolete graphics APIs, hard-coded paths, high-DPI scaling, or missing runtime libraries.
- Confirm the build. Compare the installed executable and patch level with the manifest. Applying a fix intended for another release can create new failures.
- Try the documented native configuration. Use the recorded resolution, renderer, audio mode, and controller settings before adding third-party changes.
- Apply Windows compatibility settings deliberately. Test compatibility mode, administrator status, high-DPI behavior, and windowed mode one at a time, recording each change.
- Check dependencies. Look for the runtime components named by the installer or readme. Avoid downloading replacement binaries from unverified sites.
- Test graphics and input separately. A game that launches may still have missing textures, incorrect aspect ratio, broken audio, or unusable controls.
- Use a documented wrapper, emulator, or community patch only when needed. Record its exact version, source, license, configuration, and effect on the original experience.
- Preserve the working configuration. Copy configuration files and update the manifest with the Windows 11 build, driver, display, and date tested.
If the installer itself cannot run, do not infer that the game files are corrupt. The blocker may be an obsolete installer architecture or a discontinued activation component. A virtual machine or older supported operating system can sometimes provide a lawful environment, but its feasibility depends on the game, your license, and the hardware. The Library of Congress’s mention of operating-system disk images concerns institutional preservation submissions; it is not a blanket instruction for consumers to copy or distribute operating-system images.
What should I save before a game is delisted?
Save the materials that a storefront may stop serving, and capture the context that proves which edition they belong to:
- The complete offline installer or distribution package, not just a download button.
- All entitled patches, expansions, language files, bonus content, and manuals.
- Product keys, receipts, order records, and the account or activation requirements, stored securely.
- Store and publisher documentation explaining installation, offline mode, or legacy support.
- Your current game version, configuration files, save-game location, and a successful launch record.
- A copy on independent storage with an inventory and checksums where used.
A delisting does not by itself establish a right to obtain an unauthorized copy. Preserve what you lawfully acquired while access is available, and distinguish a discontinued sale from a discontinued authentication service.

| Route | Edition fidelity and content | Online dependence | Offline installation | Operating-system support | Compatibility and documentation | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original disc or other physical media | Usually closest to the acquired release, including its original files and manuals; may require a disc check or legacy installer. | May be independent of a storefront, but can still require activation or a discontinued service. | Possible from the media if the installer and authentication still function; create only copies permitted by local law. | Often reflects the original operating systems and may need compatibility workarounds. | Original documentation is valuable; fixes may alter the original experience. | Depends on whether you already own usable media and keys. |
| Preserved offline installer | Matches the downloaded edition and included patches; verify language, region, and build. | Can reduce launcher dependence, but it cannot remove a required activation service. | Yes, when the package is complete and the license permits its use. | Depends on the installer, dependencies, and recorded compatibility settings. | Can be paired with your own manifest, checksums, and official patch notes. | Available only if acquired before access changes or supplied by the publisher. |
| Maintained commercial re-release | May include fixes, bundled patches, altered music, or configuration changes, so it is not necessarily the original edition. | Terms vary by release; check launcher, account, and authentication requirements. | Some releases provide an installer that can be retained; confirm the current terms and package behavior. | Usually targets newer operating systems, but support is title-specific. | May include compatibility fixes and dedicated support, at the cost of changing the original behavior. | Depends on current catalog status; a title can later be delisted. |
Keep more than one route when the distinction matters: an original disc can preserve edition fidelity, while a maintained release can provide a practical modern installation. Label them as separate editions and never apply one route’s patch or compatibility note to the other without testing.
What maintained re-releases can—and cannot—guarantee
GOG describes its Preservation Program as maintaining selected classic titles, providing DRM-free releases and dedicated technical support. Its FAQ says the team runs quality tests and updates games when needed, that the program is currently Windows-only, and that titles remain in the initiative if they are delisted from sale. These are statements about that program, not a guarantee for every game, every platform, or every catalog entry.
“The GOG Preservation Program is currently Windows-only.”

A maintained re-release can be the easiest way to run a classic title on a current Windows system, but compare its files and behavior with the edition you intend to preserve. Record the re-release’s version, installer availability, included fixes, removed content, launcher requirements, and documentation separately from the original archive.
Legal boundaries, especially in the United States
Copyright and circumvention rules are jurisdiction-specific. In the United States, 37 CFR § 201.40 contains narrow exemptions for particular video-game activities; it does not create a general right to download, copy, or distribute any game you own.
When an external authentication server has stopped being provided
One provision concerns a lawfully acquired complete game when the copyright owner or authorized representative has ceased providing access to an external server needed for authentication. Under the specified conditions, restoration for personal local gameplay may be permitted. The regulation defines “ceased to provide access” with conditions that include an affirmative statement plus discontinued support, or at least six months without support and no restoration. Those details matter; an outage, delisting, or unsupported rumor is not automatically the statutory condition.
Libraries, archives, and museums
Another provision covers eligible libraries, archives, and museums preserving qualifying games that are no longer reasonably available. It includes restrictions such as a noncommercial purpose and no access outside institutional premises. Those institutional rules should not be presented as a consumer exemption.
