Then identify every dependency—operating system, launcher, DRM, original media, hardware, or online server—and test the game in a compatible environment before support disappears.
Start by checking whether the publisher or an authorized storefront still offers a supported re-release. If no such version exists, preserve the copy you already own and its context; do not assume that a delisted game is legal to download from an unverified source or that preservation gives permission to bypass DRM or redistribute files.

Why preservation requires more than saving an installer
A PC game is rarely a self-contained executable. Its ability to run can depend on a particular operating system, a disc check, a product key, a launcher account, a patch level, a graphics or sound component, or a publisher-operated authentication and multiplayer service. When support ends, any one of those pieces can fail even though the game files remain intact.
The Library of Congress’s Recommended Formats Statement – Software and Video Games treats software and games as a combination of program files, media, documentation and preservation copies. Its guidance distinguishes media-based releases from internet-based releases and notes that a DRM- or encryption-dependent file may require a virtual or emulated platform, or the original physical platform, alongside the file. That is archival guidance, not a guarantee that a particular emulator or compatibility layer will run a particular title.

Preservation therefore has two goals: retain a lawful copy and retain enough information to recreate the conditions in which that copy worked. A backup with no key, patch history or configuration notes may be unreadable when you need it.
1. Identify the exact game edition before doing anything else
Write down the title exactly as it appears on the box, disc, account or installer. Record the edition, region and release channel as well: original retail release, later disc edition, digital download, expansion bundle, remaster or publisher launcher version. Two releases with nearly identical names can use different patches, executables, activation systems and save-file locations.
Make an edition record
- Official title, edition, expansion and language.
- Publisher, developer and the current owner of the distribution or authentication service, if known.
- Where you obtained it: a physical disc, an account library, a publisher download or another authorized source.
- Disc labels, installer filenames, file sizes and checksums if you are able to calculate them.
- Product key, serial number, account identifier and any activation instructions. Store sensitive account information securely rather than publishing it with the archive.
- Included patches, hotfixes, manuals, readme files, configuration utilities and copy-protection notes.
- Operating-system version, processor architecture, graphics and audio hardware, display resolution and controller setup used successfully.
- Whether the game starts offline, requires periodic activation, or depends on a live server for login, matchmaking or content.
Date the record. A storefront catalogue, launcher policy or server status can change without changing the files in your possession.

Before attempting workarounds, search the publisher’s official page and authorized storefronts for the exact title and edition. Verify the region, included expansions, system requirements, offline-installation terms and whether the release is still supported. A modern re-release may replace obsolete activation, include compatibility fixes and provide a legitimate installer that is easier to preserve than an original disc.
GOG describes its Preservation Program as maintaining selected games for modern systems, supplying DRM-free releases and offering dedicated technical support. Its page displayed “Games in the program:308” when accessed in 2026; that is a vendor catalogue count, not an industry-wide measure, and the number and titles can change. Confirm the current listing and your region at the time you make a preservation decision.
An authorized re-release does not automatically contain every original feature. Compare the edition’s language, expansion content, multiplayer mode, save compatibility and soundtrack or video assets with the copy you own. Keep your original materials even if you buy a newer release; they document what you lawfully acquired and may contain content absent from the re-release.

3. Preserve the lawful copy and all of its context
For a physical-disc release
- Inspect every disc and record its label, revision and condition.
- Create a preservation copy of the installer media where your equipment and local law permit. Keep the original disc in a cool, dry, dark place; a copy is not a replacement for the original ownership record.
- Copy manuals, readme files, patches supplied on separate media and printed product-key cards. Photograph labels if print is fading, while keeping the originals.
- Record whether installation asks for the disc, a serial number, online activation or a particular patch.
If your computer has no optical drive, an external USB DVD drive can read a disc-based release. It only solves the physical-reading problem; it does not supply missing patches, remove DRM, satisfy a license check or make an obsolete operating system compatible.
For a digital release
- Download the installer or offline backup offered by the authorized service while it is still available.
- Keep the original installer filename and version, not only an automatically updated launcher copy.
- Export or copy manuals, configuration files, patches and save data that the launcher stores outside its installation directory.
- Record the account, activation process and whether the installer can run without contacting a server.
- Do not share account credentials or upload the installer. Your possession of a licensed copy does not make redistribution lawful.
Label and document the preservation set
Use a folder or archive name that includes the title, edition, region, source and date. Place a plain-text inventory beside the files. Include the operating system and driver versions used for a successful test, launch options, display settings, controller mappings, save-file paths and any error messages. Documentation is part of the preservation object, not optional decoration.
4. Map every dependency
Separate what you can preserve from what you can only document. A local installer can preserve program files and bundled assets; it cannot recreate a publisher’s account database, license server, matchmaking population or cloud-only content.

Mark each dependency as local, account-based or server-based. That classification tells you whether preservation can provide a playable offline copy, only a historically complete archive, or a record that still needs an external service.
5. Test the game before support ends
Use ordinary, supported settings first. Test on a spare installation or a virtual machine rather than experimenting on the only working copy. Keep a written log so another computer can reproduce the result.

- Apply only patches whose source, version and compatibility you can document. Save the original unpatched installer separately.
- Launch offline if the license permits it. Note whether the game reaches its menu, loads a saved game and starts a new game.
- Test display modes, audio, input devices, cut-scenes and a representative save. Record exact settings and any warning messages.
- Close the game, restart the computer and repeat the launch. A one-time activation success is not proof that future offline launches will work.
- Copy a known-good save and configuration into a separate test profile, then verify that the game can read it. Keep the untouched originals.
If the original environment no longer exists, research a game-specific compatibility layer, virtual machine or emulator. The required platform may need to include a particular operating-system version, driver behavior or physical device. Do not assume that a tool advertised for one title is universally compatible with all older games.

6. Preserve patches, saves and configuration separately
Maintain at least three logical components: the base release, the patch set and the user data. A patch can change executable files, copy protection, network endpoints or save formats, so record its order and version. Keep a pristine copy of each stage rather than overwriting the only installer.
- Base: original disc contents or the first authorized installer.
- Updates: official patches, hotfixes and release notes, each labelled with its version and source.
- User data: save files, profiles, screenshots, custom maps and configuration files.
- Context: manuals, readme files, key information, successful settings and a test log.
Save locations vary by game and operating system. Search the installation folder, the user’s documents or saved-games folders, and launcher-specific directories. Copy data while the game is closed to avoid capturing a partially written save. Preserve more than one save slot when possible so a corrupted file does not eliminate your only progress.
7. Back up more than one copy and check it
Keep a primary preservation set and at least one additional copy on a separate device or in a separate physical location. A second copy protects against drive failure, theft and accidental deletion; it does not create a legal right to circumvent DRM or share the files.
Periodically open a sample of installers, archives, manuals and save files. Confirm that the storage device is readable, compare checksums or file sizes when available, and migrate the set before a device reaches the end of its service life. The Library of Congress guidance supports preservation copies and documentation but does not prescribe a consumer backup interval, so choose a schedule that matches the age and importance of your media.
Keep one copy offline when practical. Label removable media with the title, edition and date, and store the inventory with the copy rather than relying on memory about which disc or drive contains which version.
8. Understand DRM, copyright and the limits of preservation
In the United States, Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act generally prohibits circumventing a technological measure that controls access to a copyrighted work. Exemptions are created through a statutory rulemaking process for defined classes of works, users, purposes and time periods. They are limited and temporary.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 materials discuss game-preservation exemptions for eligible libraries, archives and museums under conditions that include noncommercial activity and restrictions on access outside institutional premises. Those provisions are not blanket permission for an individual to bypass DRM, remove a license check, publish a copy or operate a public download mirror. They also do not determine the law in another country.

Do not treat ownership of a disc or account as automatic authorization to download an unverified copy. For an uncertain copying, circumvention or distribution question, consult current official legal information and, where necessary, a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction. Terms of service and license agreements can impose additional conditions.
9. Separate offline play from online service dependency
When a publisher announces a shutdown, identify exactly what is ending. A server may handle only multiplayer matchmaking, or it may also perform login, license validation, character storage, downloadable content delivery or the entire game loop.
- If an offline mode launches and saves locally, test it before the shutdown and preserve the files and configuration that make that mode work.
- If activation is required, document the account and activation state and look for an official offline-installer or deactivation announcement.
- If multiplayer requires a publisher server, preserve client files and network settings but describe the result accurately: the archive cannot recreate the server or its player population.
- If cloud saves are the only saves, export or download them while the service remains available and verify that the local copy loads.
Do not publish server credentials, private keys or personal account data in a preservation archive. Preserve public documentation and your own configuration notes instead.

11. Troubleshoot by symptom, not by age
The installer will not start
Verify that the media is readable, copy the installer to a local drive, run it with the documented permissions and check whether it expects a particular operating-system component. Compare the file with your preserved copy. Do not replace it with a random download simply because the title is old.

The game installs but closes immediately
Reproduce the failure with the original patch level, then test the documented operating-system compatibility settings and required drivers in an isolated environment. Record whether the failure occurs before or after authentication. A compatibility layer may help, but select one based on this title and edition rather than a generic “old games” claim.
The disc or key is rejected
Check the edition and region, inspect the key for transcription errors and determine whether the publisher’s activation service is still operating. Look for an official re-release or support notice. Do not infer that a rejected key authorizes circumvention.
The game launches only when online
Determine whether the network is needed for login, license validation, cloud data or multiplayer. Preserve local files and test any officially supported offline mode. If the server is essential, describe the dependency in your archive and do not promise offline play.

Saves are missing after reinstalling
Search the old user-profile and launcher directories, restore one copied save to a test profile and confirm the game’s version matches the save format. Keep the original files untouched until the restored copy loads successfully.
A multiplayer mode no longer connects
Check the publisher’s service status and shutdown notice before changing local settings. If the server has closed, a local backup can preserve the client and its history but cannot restore matchmaking, authentication or the former community.
12. A compact preservation checklist
- Exact title, edition, region and release format identified.
- Authorized re-release checked, including current availability and system requirements.
- Installer or disc, patches, manuals, keys and activation details copied and labelled.
- Save files, profiles, custom content and configuration files exported.
- Operating-system, hardware, driver and launch settings documented.
- DRM, launcher, account and server dependencies classified.
- Successful offline and online tests recorded with dates and error messages.
- At least one separate backup created and periodically checked for readability.
- Legal uncertainty kept separate from technical advice; no unverified download or unauthorized redistribution used.
What preservation can—and cannot—deliver
A careful archive can keep a lawful game, its documentation and a reproducible working environment available long after a support page disappears. It can also show exactly which feature depended on a server or activation service, preventing false expectations. It cannot guarantee that a future operating system, discontinued hardware, closed account or publisher server will remain available, and it cannot turn an unauthorized copy or DRM circumvention into a lawful one.
