Keep it unpowered, document its condition before every move, house it in a stable and chemically inert case, control light and humidity, and prevent casual handling. Have a qualified vintage-electronics technician assess it before any electrical test, and use a replica, emulator, or video for demonstrations.
Only 200 Apple-1 computers, plus prototypes, were made, according to a collector exhibition account. That scarcity makes an undocumented cleaning, improvised mount, or unsuccessful power-up a potentially irreversible loss of evidence and value.

Why an Apple-1 needs artifact-level care
The Apple-1 dates from 1976 and combines vulnerable materials: a printed-circuit board, metal parts, plastic components, paper documentation, sockets, hand-soldered connections and, on some examples, later owner modifications. Age can make solder joints brittle, coatings fragile and component leads easy to bend. A part that looks like dirt may be original residue, a handwritten identification mark or evidence of a previous repair.

The original system was not a self-contained modern computer. The Smithsonian collection record describes a video display, ASCII keyboard and an AC power unit supplying 8 volts at 3 amps and 28 volts at 1 amp; a cassette interface could provide storage and programming support. Those are historical system specifications, not instructions to energize an unrestored board.

An Apple-1 exhibition account describes planning for insurance, specialist transport, security, documentation and lighting, and warns that parts can break and coatings can peel. Treat every intervention as a conservation decision: first preserve evidence, then improve presentation only when the change is necessary, reversible and documented.
Establish a condition record before touching or moving it
Create a baseline while the board is in a secure, clean area with good, diffuse light. The record should stay with the artifact and be updated after every inspection, loan or change in display.
Photograph both sides and every associated part
- Take high-resolution, straight-on images of the component side, solder side, edge connectors, sockets, transformers, power unit, keyboard, cassette interface and any case or paperwork.
- Add oblique-light photographs for lifted traces, flaking coatings, dents, corrosion, residue and raised or loose components.
- Include a scale, color reference and a unique inventory number in the frame, but do not attach labels or tape to the board.
- Record serial numbers, date codes, handwritten notes, maker marks, substitutions and non-original fasteners exactly as found.
Write an inventory and handling log
List every object in the set, its dimensions, approximate weight, current location and packing configuration. Note which pieces are attached, which are separate and which connectors or leads are especially vulnerable. Record who handled the set, when, for what purpose and whether anything changed. A custody trail is essential when an Apple-1 is loaned, shipped or shown to visitors.

Do not “improve” the surface during documentation
The Dryden Apple-1 exhibition account states: “No cleaning has been done. That is the approach many museums prefer. Restoration would only be done if the artifact were endangered or badly damaged.” Patina, dust embedded in old residue, original sockets, substitutions and later owner work can all be evidence of the computer’s history. Do not polish contacts, remove residue, straighten leads, replace parts or apply a protective coating before a conservator has assessed the object and approved a reversible treatment plan.

Choose a display that protects the board first
A static display in a locked case is normally the lowest-risk option. The case should be physically stable, dust-resistant and made from materials that will not release corrosive vapors. Ask the case maker for material information and allow new case components to off-gas before the Apple-1 is installed.
Case construction and internal materials
- Use a secure exhibition case with a lock, controlled access and enough clearance that visitors cannot touch the board through openings.
- Prefer chemically inert plastics, metals and barrier fabrics. Library of Congress guidance advises that case materials pass the Oddy test or photographic activity test.
- Keep wood, fresh paint, rubber, adhesives and unknown foams away from the artifact unless they are isolated by a proven barrier and approved by a conservator.
- Provide ventilation or heat management when lighting or electronics near the case could raise its temperature. A sealed case can trap heat and pollutants if its materials are unsuitable.
- Place the case on a rigid, level stand away from doors, vibration, radiators, vents, plumbing and direct traffic.
Light, ultraviolet radiation and heat
Light damage accumulates. Filtering ultraviolet radiation does not make unlimited exposure safe, and infrared energy can heat the board and accelerate deterioration. The Library of Congress warns: “In most cases, conservation treatment cannot reverse light damage.”
- Keep sunlight off the case, including reflected sunlight from windows and bright walls.
- Use the lowest practical visible illuminance for the display’s purpose. Switch display lights off whenever no one is viewing the object.
- Put hot fixtures outside the case or provide sufficient airflow and measure the temperature at the board, not only in the room.
- Use UV-filtering acrylic or glass only after verifying the stated UV performance and the material’s chemical suitability.
- Consider rotating the Apple-1 off display for long periods. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends blocking UV and unnecessary light and using dynamic light-blocking procedures when galleries are closed.
Temperature and relative humidity
Avoid garages, attics, damp basements, exterior-wall cold spots and rooms with rapid heating or cooling. Sudden changes can produce condensation and dimensional stress even when the daily average appears acceptable.

| Canadian Conservation Institute | Room-specific control is required | Moderate 40–55% RH is adequate for most metals; above 65% RH is a high-corrosion risk for many objects | Useful for setting a conservative target for a mixed metal, plastic, paper and electronic object. |
Because an Apple-1 contains several material types, these ranges are starting points rather than a universal prescription. A conservator should set tighter limits if the board has corrosion, flaking coatings, unstable plastics or other active deterioration.

Monitor the case instead of guessing
Put a calibrated thermo-hygrometer or data logger inside the case, or immediately beside it if the enclosure prevents reliable measurement. Review the record for sustained excursions, repeated daily swings and sudden changes. A single reading cannot show whether the object is experiencing harmful cycles. Check the instrument against a reference periodically and document battery changes and calibration dates.
An enclosure may buffer a short environmental spike, but it is not a substitute for room control. If the case becomes warmer or more humid than the room, correct the cause rather than sealing it more tightly.
Support and handle the board without stressing it
Design a custom, non-abrasive support
There is no universal Apple-1 mount: dimensions, missing parts and condition vary. Have the support shaped to the individual board. It should hold the board around strong structural areas, distribute weight and leave solder joints, component leads, sockets and edge connectors free of pressure. Use stable, non-abrasive materials and make the mount removable without adhesive applied to the artifact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Keep the board off the floor and away from case walls, glazing and hardware that could fall onto it.
- Prevent sliding and tipping if the case is bumped or moved.
- Support associated parts separately so a heavy power unit or keyboard cannot strike the board.
- Photograph the installed mount and mark its orientation in the condition record.
Use a two-person, two-hand lift when practical
Handle the board with clean, dry hands. Nitrile gloves can help when they improve grip and do not increase drop risk; loose or contaminated gloves are worse than bare, clean hands. Support the board with two hands over a padded, rigid work surface. Never lift it by the keyboard connector, edge connector, sockets, heat sinks or protruding components. Keep food, drinks, jewelry, pens and loose tools away from the work area, and restrict handling to trained, authorized people.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep visitors from becoming an accidental hazard
Use a lock, a physical barrier and enough viewing distance that a hand, bag or camera cannot strike the case. Post a no-touch instruction outside the enclosure. If the display is in a public venue, include an alarm or opening sensor and a written response plan for a case breach, power failure or environmental alarm.
Pack and transport it as a museum object
Moving an Apple-1 is often riskier than displaying it. The documented exhibition account says preparation can take weeks or months and explicitly raises transport, insurance, security, documentation and lighting questions.
- Freeze the condition record. Photograph the board, accessories, mount and packing configuration immediately before closing the case or box. Have the sender and receiver sign the inventory.
- Separate vulnerable components. Immobilize the board and associated parts in individual compartments so connectors, leads and heavy objects cannot contact one another.
- Use a custom padded container. The inner support should prevent movement without compressing components. Add shock and vibration protection around the immobilized support, not loose packing directly against the board.
- Control custody. Use a specialist art or museum transporter when possible, keep a handoff log and limit the number of people who know the route and schedule.
- Arrange insurance before departure. Confirm the declared value, coverage during loading and unloading, exclusions for electrical testing and the procedure for reporting damage.
- Acclimatize after a major temperature change. Leave the packing closed until the object has reached the destination environment gradually. Opening a cold container in warm, humid air can cause condensation on metal and electronics.
- Inspect before unpacking completely. Compare the exterior for impact, then compare the artifact with the pre-shipment photographs. Record any change before attempting to correct it.
Do not power an original board merely to prove it works
A static display avoids electrical, thermal and mechanical risks. An unsuccessful power-up can destroy irreplaceable components, damage traces or turn a recoverable fault into a fire hazard. The Smithsonian record’s 8-volt, 3-amp and 28-volt, 1-amp figures describe the original system; they are not a modern test procedure.
What must happen before any energizing attempt
Use a qualified vintage-electronics technician who is familiar with early digital hardware. The technician should inspect the power unit, capacitors, connectors, insulation, traces, sockets, component substitutions and previous modifications, then compare the proposed setup with the period Apple-1 Operation Manual preserved by the Computer History Museum. The assessment should be written, identify uncertainties and specify protective limits and an emergency shutoff.

Do not substitute a modern adapter because its label appears to match one voltage. The complete power arrangement, current capability, polarity, grounding, connector condition and board modifications all matter. Keep modern cables and adapters physically separated from the artifact unless a conservator and technician have approved the installation.
Safer ways to demonstrate the computer
- Display a faithful replica next to the original and let visitors interact only with the replica.
- Run an emulator on a separate screen or computer, with no electrical connection to the Apple-1.
- Show a video of a verified demonstration while the original remains unpowered.
- Use labels and photographs to explain the historical video, keyboard and cassette arrangement without installing working hardware in the case.
Inspect on a schedule and respond to change
Set a written inspection interval appropriate to the environment and loan terms. At each inspection, look through the case before opening it and compare the board with the baseline photographs.
Look for these warning signs
- New orange, green or white corrosion; darkening around contacts; or a powdery deposit.
- Lifted traces, cracked solder joints, loose sockets, flaking coating or a component that has shifted.
- Mold, pest evidence, oily residue, unusual odor or droplets inside the case.
- Dust accumulation, condensation, case discoloration or evidence that foam, rubber or adhesive is off-gassing.
- Temperature or RH excursions, repeated daily swings or a logger that has stopped recording.
What to do when you find a problem
Photograph the condition in place, stop handling and contact a conservator. Quarantine the object from other collection materials if active mold, oily residue or active corrosion is present. Do not wipe, scrape, vacuum, blow or spray the board while deciding what to do.

Never use household glass cleaner, alcohol, abrasive erasers, compressed air, oil or contact cleaner without a specialist’s written treatment plan. Even a treatment that makes a contact look brighter can remove plating, original residue or evidence of a repair. Preserve the removed material and treatment record if a conservator does approve an intervention.
Compare display approaches before committing
| Approach | Artifact safety | Interactivity | Main controls needed | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unpowered original in a locked case | Lowest electrical risk; physical and environmental risks remain | Visual only | Inert materials, low cumulative light, stable RH and temperature, monitoring, security and a reversible mount | Default choice for an unrestored or undocumented board |
| Original beside a replica or emulator | Original remains unpowered and isolated | High, but visitors interact with the separate system | Clear separation, independent power, labels and supervision | Public education where hands-on use matters |
| Original connected for a supervised demonstration | Highest electrical and thermal risk | Direct historical operation | Written condition assessment, qualified technician, period-manual comparison, protective limits, emergency shutoff and approved installation | Only when the owner and conservator accept the documented risk |
| Long-term storage off display | Reduces cumulative light and visitor risk | None | Stable monitored environment, inert packing, security and periodic inspection | Rotation schedules or when the case environment cannot be controlled |
Use the same decision axes for every proposal: artifact safety versus interactivity, UV and heat dose, enclosure emissions and ventilation, environmental monitoring, physical security, mount reversibility, and the transport, insurance and conservation support required.
A practical setup sequence
- Assign responsibility. Name the owner or collection manager, conservator, technician and emergency contact. Restrict access to trained handlers.
- Complete the baseline record. Photograph both sides, inventory every part and note all marks, substitutions and existing damage.
- Stabilize the room. Select an interior location away from sunlight, vents, plumbing, vibration and rapid temperature changes. Start recording temperature and RH before installation.
- Prepare the case. Verify lock strength, glazing, UV performance, material chemistry, ventilation and sensor placement. Allow new materials to off-gas as advised by a conservator.
- Fabricate and test the mount. Fit a removable support to the individual board. Test for tipping, pressure points and vibration with a non-valuable mock-up first.
- Install without power. Use two-hand support, keep connectors and leads unloaded, and photograph the final orientation.
- Set the light schedule. Use low practical illuminance, turn lights off when unviewed and record the schedule so cumulative exposure can be managed.
- Document the handover. Record case location, sensor serial number, alarm limits, key holders and the inspection date.
- Review trends. Check the logger and visual condition at each interval. Investigate trends rather than waiting for visible damage.
Records, security and future treatment
Keep the condition report, photographs, inventories, transport receipts, insurance documents, environmental logs, mount drawings, treatment approvals and inspection notes together. Use file names that include the inventory number, view and date, and keep a secure backup. When the board changes location, copy the complete record rather than sending an undocumented object.
Any future cleaning, repair, replacement or electrical demonstration should have a written purpose, risk assessment, method, responsible professional, date, before-and-after photographs and a statement of what was not changed. Reversible, minimal intervention protects both the physical Apple-1 and the information carried by its original condition.
