Preserve an Apple-1 as a fragile historical artifact, not as ordinary vintage electronics. Keep the original board and its historical modifications intact, avoid routine power-on demonstrations, house it in a rigid padded enclosure, and maintain a monitored, stable environment with low visible light and controlled ultraviolet and infrared exposure. Before every handling event, record photographs, component details, condition, provenance and custody. If operation or treatment is unavoidable, use a conservator-approved plan and document every intervention.

Why an Apple-1 requires museum-level care

The Apple-1 is unusually scarce and unusually vulnerable. Achim Baqué’s Apple-1 exhibitions account states that only 200 units, plus prototypes, were made. Each surviving board therefore carries historical information in its components, soldering, coating, labels, handwritten marks and later modifications. A replacement part or cosmetic “cleanup” can remove evidence that cannot be recreated.

Age compounds the risk. Fiberglass and epoxy board material, copper traces, metal components, sockets, plastic parts, coatings, wood, paper labels and attached peripherals respond differently to moisture, heat, vibration and handling. Connectors and sockets can be brittle, coatings can lift, and a board can flex or crack when unsupported. Baqué described the transport risk plainly: “The risk of damaging the computer is very high. The Apple-1 computer is very old. Parts could break off. The coating can peel off, and other damage can occur.”

Preparation for a public exhibition can take weeks or months. The Apple-1 exhibition account describes extensive paperwork, customs inspections and a case in which coating peeled during transport. Plan preservation, packing, insurance, security and environmental control before announcing a loan or opening a display.

Document identity and condition before handling

Do not begin with cleaning or a power test. Begin with an identity and condition record that can be compared after every move. Apple-1 boards may not have a regular serial-number system, so photographs and distinctive component-level descriptions are part of the object’s identity control.

Photograph the complete object

  • Take sharp, evenly lit photographs of the board front and back, including the full outline and all edges.
  • Make close-ups of chips, sockets, solder joints, corrosion, cracks, coating losses, labels, stamps and handwritten marks.
  • Photograph the keyboard, cassette interface, power supply, cables, connectors and any case or stand supplied with the loan.
  • Include a scale and a written image identifier in the record, but do not attach labels or tape to the artifact.

Record what makes this specimen distinctive

List manufacturer markings, chip numbers, date codes, unusual component substitutions, wire repairs, socket types, fasteners and visible modifications. Record which parts are present, which are detached and which are associated accessories rather than original components. The Apple-1 Registry’s record for Registry #43, last updated July 12, 2026, illustrates why this level of detail matters: it records display history, component changes and a 2024 auction result rather than relying on a simple serial number.

Write a condition and provenance report

Identify the current owner, lender, custodian and contact person. Describe provenance, previous repairs, exhibition history, known storage conditions and any prior electrical testing. Number every item in the loan: board, keyboard, cassette interface, power supply, cables, manuals, boxes and accessories. Note existing dust, oxidation, lifting coating, missing parts and unstable areas as “present before handling” when that is what the inspection shows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Have the lender approve the report and photographs before packing. After unpacking, repeat the same views and compare them rather than relying on memory.

Decide whether the computer should be powered on

The preservation default is display without routine operation. A functioning museum example shows that operation is possible, but there is no universal safe electrical test procedure for every surviving Apple-1. Age, undocumented repairs, replacement components and the condition of the power supply can vary substantially.

Use a separate demonstration whenever possible

An emulator, replica or separate demonstration unit lets visitors see and interact with Apple-1 software without exposing the original to electrical stress, heat, connector wear or accidental handling. Show the original as an artifact and place the interactive experience nearby, clearly labeled as a simulation or replica.

If operation is essential

Treat a power-on as a specialist intervention, not as a routine part of gallery opening. A computer conservator or similarly qualified electronic-heritage specialist should inspect the board, power supply, cables and connections first and approve the procedure in writing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the pre-test condition with photographs and a written checklist.
  2. Review the power supply for deterioration, unsafe modifications, damaged insulation and evidence of overheating. Do not energize an unknown or visibly compromised supply.
  3. Use equipment with current limiting and surge protection, selected by the specialist for the specific specimen.
  4. Keep a qualified operator at the equipment for the entire test. Monitor temperature, smell, sound, smoke, electrical readings and display stability continuously.
  5. Stop immediately at abnormal heat, odor, noise, smoke, instability, unexpected current draw or any sign of coating movement.
  6. Record the date, duration, equipment, settings, observed behavior and any intervention in the object file.

Never leave an original Apple-1 running unattended, cycle it daily merely to prove that it works, or connect modern peripherals without a documented compatibility and conservation assessment.

Support the board without adding new damage

A rigid, padded, custom-fitted support should carry the board without flexing and prevent connectors, sockets and coated surfaces from bearing load. The board should not rest on loose foam, adhesive-backed pads, cable ties, hard pressure points or materials that shed particles. Do not clamp across components or press down on the coating.

Design the mount around the artifact

  • Support broad, structurally sound areas from below; isolate fragile components and overhanging edges.
  • Leave clearance around sockets, connectors, chips, labels and areas of lifting coating.
  • Prevent lateral movement while allowing the object to be removed without prying or pulling on components.
  • Use conservation-tested, chemically inert materials where possible, and document every material placed inside the case.
  • Keep the board horizontal for storage and transport unless a conservator has approved another orientation.

For the Dryden Apple-1 loan to ZKM, a custom protective box was built for the mainboard, cassette interface and keyboard. That example demonstrates the principle: the enclosure is engineered around the complete historic object, not improvised from a generic electronics case.

Choose a secure enclosure

For public display, use a rigid, lockable case with a custom mount, dust control and enough internal volume to avoid contact with glazing. The case should resist vibration and unauthorized access while allowing inspection and environmental monitoring. Avoid materials with strong odors, uncured finishes, plasticizers or unknown adhesives; off-gassing can harm metals, coatings, plastics and paper over time. A conservator should approve the case materials and mount before the artifact is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set stable temperature, relative humidity and light

Stability matters more than chasing a perfect single reading. Rapid changes make dissimilar materials expand, contract or exchange moisture at different rates. Set the final case target with a conservator who has examined the specific Apple-1 and its mixed materials.

Factor Practical preservation target How to apply it
Relative humidity General museum guidance places most collections between 35% and 65% RH; plastics-care guidance often favors about 30–50% RH and staying below 65% to reduce mould risk. Use a conservator-selected case target within a stable range. Do not make abrupt adjustments to chase a brief excursion.
Temperature No universal Apple-1 setpoint is established in the available guidance. Keep the case and room at stable, moderate conditions; avoid heat sources, chilled air blowing directly on the case and rapid day/night swings.
Visible light Use the lowest illuminance that still makes the object legible. Limit display hours, switch lights off when the gallery is closed and measure illuminance rather than judging brightness by eye.
Ultraviolet and infrared Exclude or greatly reduce UV and IR. Use filtered lighting and glazing, keep hot lamps outside the case and provide airflow so the enclosure does not heat up.

The Smithsonian Institution’s conservation proceedings describe illuminance as “always a compromise between preserving the collection item and making it clearly visible.” Light damage accumulates and is generally irreversible; Library of Congress collections-care guidance notes that conservation treatment cannot reverse it in most cases. This is especially important for paper labels, stamps, handwritten notes and coatings. Never place an Apple-1 in direct sunlight, even temporarily for photographs.

Plan lighting for the whole exhibition period

Specify the light source, measured illuminance, UV level, operating hours and blackout schedule in the exhibition plan. A short, low-light display is less demanding than a year-long installation. If the case warms under lighting, reduce the lamp load or redesign ventilation rather than compensating by repeatedly changing the room thermostat.

Monitor the case and gallery continuously

Place a calibrated thermo-hygrometer or data logger inside the case or microclimate and another in the surrounding room. Record temperature and RH continuously; log visible light and UV as practical. Review trends for excursions, duration and rate of change instead of reacting to one isolated reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Set alarm thresholds with the conservator and define who receives alerts outside gallery hours.
  • Check logger time, battery status, calibration and data download before the object enters the case.
  • Keep a written log of door openings, cleaning, lighting changes, HVAC failures and maintenance.
  • Inspect the artifact at an agreed frequency for coating movement, corrosion, condensation, mould, dust or new mechanical damage.
  • Save environmental files with the object record so future custodians can relate changes to incidents.

Museum preventive-conservation guidance treats environmental monitors and data loggers as standard tools. Monitoring is useful only when someone has authority to respond: define actions for a high-RH alarm, a failed HVAC system, a hot lamp, a leaking case or a security breach before the exhibition opens.

Handle and transport the Apple-1 conservatively

Limit the number of handlers and train them before the move. Use two-handed support, keep the board horizontal in its fitted enclosure and never lift by a keyboard, socket, cable, connector or protruding component.

  1. Freeze the record. Complete the condition report, approve photographs and verify the contents of the loan.
  2. Prepare the enclosure. Fit the board and accessories into the custom support. Confirm that nothing can shift, touch the coating or load a connector.
  3. Photograph the packed state. Record the position of every component, mount, cushion, seal and accessory before closing the case.
  4. Close and label the container. Use tamper-evident seals where appropriate. Label orientation, handling limits, contact details and environmental requirements without attaching labels to the artifact.
  5. Document custody. Record every handoff, vehicle or flight segment, seal number, time and condition of the container.
  6. Control the route. Avoid unnecessary transfers, vibration, temperature extremes, unattended storage and security weak points.
  7. Inspect on arrival. Photograph the sealed container, then the unpacked artifact. Compare the condition with the pre-move report before installation.

For an international loan, arrange insurance, security procedures, customs documentation and re-import paperwork in advance. Customs inspection can require opening a case, so the packing plan must allow inspection without forcing an improvised unpacking or unsupported lift.

Do not clean or restore away historical evidence

Dust removal, polishing and replacement are not automatically preservation. A shiny board can be less historically authentic and more damaged than a dusty one. Do not polish metal, scrub solder, remove a coating, erase handwriting, replace parts for cosmetic uniformity or attach a later keyboard simply to make the display look complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Dryden Apple-1 was intentionally not cleaned and retains additions made in 1976. Baqué stated, “Restoration would only be done if the artifact were endangered or badly damaged.” Follow that threshold: treatment should address a documented risk such as active corrosion, unstable material, severe structural damage or a safety hazard, not an owner’s preference for a newer appearance.

When treatment is justified

  • Have a conservator experienced with electronic heritage examine the problem and define the treatment objective.
  • Document the condition, rationale, proposed materials, techniques and expected change before work begins.
  • Favor minimal, reversible or retreatable actions where feasible, and preserve removed material and replaced parts with the object record.
  • Mark all interventions in the provenance and condition history, including who performed them and when.
  • Separate electrical safety repairs from cosmetic restoration; a safe power supply does not justify altering original board components.

Choose a display strategy deliberately

There is no single best display format. Compare the options against artifact risk, historical authenticity, visitor access, monitoring burden, security, insurance, cost, sustainability and reversibility.

Decision Lower-risk choice What it gives up or requires
Visitor interaction Original in a case plus an emulator or replica for hands-on use Visitors do not operate the original, but electrical and handling risk is greatly reduced.
Case format Rigid, padded, lockable and environmentally monitored enclosure Costs more design and installation time than an open bench; access is less immediate.
Exhibition duration Short, low-light presentation with blackout hours Requires rotation, scheduling or a decision not to keep the object on permanent view.
Loan geography Local transport with few handoffs International loans can reach more audiences but add customs, insurance, security and transit risks.
Object appearance Untreated historical condition Visible dust, wear or modifications remain, but historical evidence is retained.
Power demonstration Separate demonstration unit The original’s live behavior is not shown; any operation of the original needs specialist approval.

If a lender requires operation, make the electrical plan a separate approval from the exhibition design. If a lender requires cosmetic treatment, request a written conservation rationale and retain the right to decline work that is not necessary for the artifact’s safety.

Respond to common warning signs

Coating lifts or flakes

Stop handling and isolate the case from vibration. Do not press the coating down, apply household adhesive or brush away loose fragments. Photograph the area, note when it was first seen and contact the conservator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RH rises toward or above 65%

Verify the reading with a second calibrated instrument, check for condensation, leaks and failed HVAC, and follow the prewritten response plan. Avoid a sudden drying treatment that could create a damaging swing. A sustained RH above 65% is a mould-risk condition in the cited plastics-care guidance and requires professional assessment.

The case becomes warm

Switch off display lighting if safe to do so, record the temperature trend and inspect the lamp, power supply and ventilation. Do not add a fan that blows directly on the artifact or opens the case unnecessarily. Have the case and lighting redesigned if heat recurs.

The board smells, crackles or behaves erratically during an approved test

Disconnect power using the specialist’s safe shutdown procedure, keep the artifact untouched and document the symptom, duration and readings. Do not retry to see whether the problem repeats.

A component or accessory is found loose after transport

Do not reinsert, glue or straighten it. Photograph its location, retain it in a labeled inert container and notify the lender and conservator immediately. Compare the finding with the pre-transport photographs to establish whether it is new.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repeatable custody checklist

Every move, exhibition change and inspection should leave the same trail:

  • Condition report approved before handling.
  • Front, back, edge and detail photographs completed.
  • Provenance, component list, markings and modifications recorded.
  • Loan contents, insurance, security and customs documents verified.
  • Mount, case materials, seals and environmental logger checked.
  • Temperature, RH, light and UV requirements communicated to all handlers.
  • Two trained handlers assigned and handoff log prepared.
  • Packed condition photographed and container sealed.
  • Arrival inspection completed before installation.
  • Any power-on or treatment separately approved, monitored and documented.

This discipline protects both the physical Apple-1 and the evidence that establishes what it is. For an object without a dependable serial-number system, the record is part of the artifact’s long-term identity.
