Whether you can keep playing depends on the exact game, console, and disc condition. An eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc may qualify for Xbox Disc-to-Digital, but Microsoft’s rules keep that access conditional on retaining the qualifying disc. Backward-compatible disc games still require the disc in the drive, and Xbox Series S cannot read discs. If the disc is missing or unreadable, your options are usually an existing digital license or a compatible replacement copy.
First, identify the game and what is wrong with the disc
Check the exact title and edition, the console generation printed on the release, and whether the console can recognize the disc. Also confirm whether your console has an optical drive: Xbox Series S is digital-only. Those details determine whether to try Disc-to-Digital, use backward compatibility, rely on a digital purchase, or look for replacement media.

- The disc still reads: For an Xbox One or Series X disc, check whether that specific game is eligible for Disc-to-Digital.
- The disc is unreadable or missing: A disc-based entitlement may not be claimable without a recognized qualifying disc. Check for a digital license on your account or seek the exact compatible replacement.
- The game is from an older Xbox generation: Look up the title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility list; support is selective, not universal.
- You previously bought the game digitally: Sign in to the account that owns it and check your library. Digital access follows separate account and console rules.
Can an Xbox disc be converted to digital?
Xbox Disc-to-Digital for eligible Xbox One and Series X games
Xbox announced Disc-to-Digital on August 26, 2026, describing support for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, subject to exclusions and changes over time. The practical claim path requires inserting a supported disc into a supported console and launching the game. The disc must be readable enough for the console to recognize it; Xbox’s announcement does not establish that a damaged, unrecognized disc can claim an entitlement. Keep the qualifying disc
This is not an unconditional transfer of ownership from disc to account. Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules say the entitlement remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require eligibility to be revalidated and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer have the disc. Do not sell or discard it after claiming. Eligibility can change, and not every disc qualifies.

Where supported, a Disc-to-Digital entitlement may also provide Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming benefits, but those features are title-dependent. The program does not make every disc playable on every device.
What if the game is backward compatible?
Some Xbox 360 and original Xbox games work on newer consoles, but compatibility is title-specific. For a supported disc game, the console downloads the game and the disc must remain inserted to play. Installation does not turn a physical copy into a disc-free license. Check the Xbox backward-compatibility catalog before buying a replacement or troubleshooting an unsupported title.

Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot use a physical game disc even when the title is backward compatible. You need a compatible digital license on that console or other supported access. Series X has a disc drive and is the relevant current-generation option for physical-disc play.
If the disc is damaged or unavailable
When the console still recognizes it
If it is an Xbox One or Series X game, check Disc-to-Digital eligibility and follow the supported console’s prompt. If it is an older title, first verify backward compatibility. In either case, preserve the disc: the disc remains necessary for backward-compatible disc play, and Disc-to-Digital access is conditional on retaining the qualifying disc.

When the console cannot read it, or you no longer have it
Check whether you already own a digital copy under the Microsoft account you use on Xbox. Microsoft’s rules distinguish account and Home console device licenses for Xbox One and Series digital games; availability on another console can depend on signing into the owning account and Home console settings. Xbox 360 digital licenses have separate rules: a downloaded game may be used on the first console it was downloaded to, while use on another console requires the account to be signed in. The Microsoft usage rules explain these distinctions.
If no digital license is available, a replacement copy of the exact game is the straightforward physical-media route, if one is obtainable and compatible with your hardware. Match the platform generation and edition, and check region compatibility and any special peripheral requirements. A replacement disc will not restore unavailable downloadable content or bring back a publisher’s closed multiplayer servers.

Microsoft’s published materials do not establish a general repair or resurfacing method for Xbox game discs. Do not assume polishing will make a disc readable or eligible; avoid treating an unverified repair as a substitute for checking the title’s license and compatibility.

The Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace stopped supporting new purchases on July 29, 2024. Xbox said previously purchased content remains playable and redownloadable, and selected Xbox 360 games are available through backward compatibility on newer consoles. The closure did not make every 360 title compatible with newer hardware; check the title in Xbox’s compatibility catalog.

Having a working license also does not guarantee online play indefinitely. Xbox says publisher-run multiplayer servers can be shut down independently. Its backward-compatibility information also notes that original Xbox online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility, although supported offline multiplayer and system link may remain. Not by itself, according to Xbox’s July 22, 2026 announcement of Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC. Its early release began with four original Xbox games—BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy—and the announcement ties PC or supported-handheld play to ownership of the corresponding digital console license, not possession of a physical disc. Disc preservation has limits
Xbox describes Disc-to-Digital as part of a broader game-preservation effort, but the published rules still make eligibility and access conditional. Preserving a playable copy means keeping the disc when required, keeping access to the account that owns a digital license, and checking compatibility and online-service status for the specific title. No single route preserves every game, edition, feature, or multiplayer service.
