Physical PS4 games, supported Xbox discs and compatible Nintendo Switch game cards can work on newer consoles—but only when the console has the right reader and the specific game is supported. A physical copy is not a universal guarantee of compatibility, complete offline play or permanent access to every part of a game.
What a physical game copy does—and does not—preserve
A disc or game card can carry a portable copy of the game’s license, but the console still needs compatible hardware and the title must be supported. Games may also need to install to console storage or download updates. The physical media should not be assumed to contain every file needed to play: manufacturer guidance on compatibility and installation does not establish that every retail edition works offline in full, without updates, account checks or server access.

Check the format, compatibility and installation requirements

PlayStation: check the PS5 model and the individual PS4 game
Sony says PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, describing a supported collection of more than 4,000 titles. Its ecosystem page says more than 99 percent of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5. Those figures refer specifically to PS4-to-PS5 compatibility, not to other console generations, and do not mean every title is supported. Sony lists exceptions and notes that some PS4 games may show errors or unexpected behavior. Check the PS5 backward-compatibility information for the title before relying on it.

- Confirm that your PS5 has a disc drive. A PS4 disc cannot be used directly on a PS5 Digital Edition without a compatible add-on drive.
- Check the exact game against Sony’s compatibility information, especially if you plan to buy add-ons or depend on a particular feature.
- Insert the disc and allow the game to install and update. Keep the disc in the drive when you play.
Sony documents an add-on disc drive for certain PS5 Digital Edition model groups, not every disc-less PS5. Verify your console’s exact model before buying one; the PlayStation disc support page is the supplied official reference for disc-related hardware guidance. PS5 does not support PS3 game discs.
Xbox: Series S cannot use discs
Xbox Series S is digital-only and does not play physical discs. If your library is on disc, you need a disc-capable console to use it.

For supported backward-compatible disc games, Xbox says inserting the disc starts a download to the console hard drive. The disc therefore remains relevant as the physical entitlement even though the game files are installed on storage. Check whether the title is listed in the Xbox backward-compatibility catalog before expecting an older disc to work.

Xbox said the disc continues to work as before and described the feature as part of its game-preservation commitment. “Most” does not mean all: the announcement does not establish eligibility for every title or every older Xbox and Xbox 360 disc. Nintendo: Switch 2 accepts compatible Switch game cards
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games originally released for Nintendo Switch, and that Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2. Some games may not be supported or fully compatible, so consult Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information and guidance on transferring games for the individual title and any limitations.
Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards. Those cards are storage media, not substitutes for physical game cards; having one does not make an unsupported game compatible.

Preserve the media and the hardware that can read it
- Keep discs in their cases and handle them by the edges. Avoid scratches, heat and direct sunlight; keep game cards in protective cases. Follow the console manual for platform-specific cleaning and storage guidance.
- Record each game’s title, region and edition, along with its format, and note which console models can play it.
- Install available updates while the publisher’s download remains available. This does not guarantee that updates, account services or servers will remain available indefinitely.
- Keep a working disc-capable console if you own games on disc and a later console omits the drive, or if a game’s compatibility is uncertain.
- For a specific release, check publisher instructions and edition-specific information before assuming it can be installed or played offline, or that included downloadable content will remain accessible.
