How to Preserve and Identify Artifacts Recovered from Saltwater Shipwrecks

Keep a newly recovered saltwater artifact wet, cool, dark, labeled, and supported. Do not let it air-dry while you decide what it is. Photograph and map it in place first, keep its connection to nearby objects, and contact a qualified nautical conservator and the responsible heritage authority before cleaning, moving, selling, exporting, or publishing a sensitive location.

Saltwater finds are evidence as well as objects. Their position, orientation, sediment, encrustation, and association with other finds can identify a vessel, cargo, date, and use. Drying, scrubbing, polishing, or an improvised chemical bath can destroy that evidence and cause irreversible damage.

What to do first

Treat recovery as an archaeological operation, not a souvenir collection. Before lifting an object, create an object-to-context record that can be followed from the seabed to storage and eventually to a laboratory or repository.

  1. Record the find in place. Note the date, coordinates or site reference, depth, visibility, orientation, sediment, nearby objects, and any visible marks, inscriptions, joins, or decoration. Take photographs from several angles with a scale and a north arrow or other orientation reference.
  2. Give it a unique identifier. Use a waterproof label and a written log. The identifier must connect the object, photographs, map position, recovery bag or container, and every later treatment record.
  3. Lift only when justified and safely possible. Preservation in place and non-destructive survey are preferred where feasible. If recovery is necessary, support the object from below; do not pull on handles, projecting parts, corrosion layers, textile, leather, or wood.
  4. Keep it wet immediately. Place it in clean site water or another conservator-approved medium, in an inert, leak-proof container. Keep it cool, dark, and protected from movement. Do not leave it in a bucket in direct sun or in a hot vehicle.
  5. Separate materials and finds. Do not place iron, copper alloy, wood, leather, glass, ceramics, and sediment from different objects together. Separation limits cross-contamination and preserves the evidence about which materials were associated.
  6. Call for professional help. A nautical conservator or laboratory experienced with waterlogged archaeological material can specify water quality, temperature, packaging, transport, testing, and treatment. Tell the heritage authority what was found before any intervention or transfer.

Conservation starts when an artifact is exposed. The Naval History and Heritage Command describes conservation as part of archaeology because, without it, archaeological information can be lost or left unused. The same principle applies to a private find: the first handling decision can determine whether the object remains interpretable.

Why drying a saltwater find is dangerous

Seawater leaves soluble salts in pores, corrosion layers, wood cells, ceramic bodies, and sediment. As water evaporates, those salts can crystallize and exert pressure inside the material. A metal that appears hard may have a fragile, salt-laden corrosion structure; a waterlogged wooden object may look sound only because water is supporting collapsed cell walls.

  • Iron and steel: evaporation can concentrate chloride salts and restart or accelerate active corrosion, producing powdering, cracking, and expanding corrosion products.
  • Wood: uncontrolled drying can cause severe shrinkage, warping, splitting, and collapse.
  • Leather, textiles, and paper: fibers can stiffen, stick together, tear, or become impossible to unfold safely.
  • Glass and ceramics: salts in porous bodies can crystallize and cause flaking, cracking, or loss of surface.
  • Composite objects: different components shrink at different rates, tearing joints and finishes.

“Dry” is not a preservation method by itself. Drying is a controlled treatment chosen after material identification, salt assessment, structural evaluation, and a storage plan. Until then, maintaining a stable wet state is usually the safer temporary measure.

Legal and ethical checks before you move or keep anything

There is no universal rule that a diver or beachcomber owns a shipwreck artifact. Applicable law can depend on the wreck’s location, the flag or nationality of the vessel, ownership of submerged land, protected-site status, salvage law, cultural-heritage statutes, and national or treaty obligations. Recovery, possession, export, publication of coordinates, and sale may each be regulated separately.

Identify the responsible state, federal, provincial, territorial, or local heritage authority before lifting an object when circumstances permit. Ask about reporting duties, permits, protected wrecks, repository requirements, and whether a qualified archaeologist must supervise work. Do not advertise a sale or export an object while ownership and cultural-heritage status are unresolved.

The UNESCO Annex to the 2001 Convention sets out 36 rules addressing project design, qualifications, documentation, conservation, and site management for underwater cultural heritage. National Park Service guidance emphasizes systematic survey, non-destructive ground-truthing, limited recovery, professional nautical conservation, and a final report. These principles are useful even where a particular jurisdiction has different legal terminology.

Do not publish precise coordinates if doing so could attract unauthorized recovery or damage an archaeological site. Share sensitive location data with the competent authority and qualified professionals through an appropriate channel.

How to document context before and during recovery

Photographs and measurements

Photograph the object before touching it, after exposing enough of its outline to understand its form, and immediately after recovery. Include a scale, color reference when practical, direction, and a frame showing surrounding features. Measure maximum length, width, thickness, and relevant diameters without forcing or straightening fragile parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maps and associations

Plot the object on a master site map and an artifact-position map. Record its depth, orientation, slope, burial, sediment type, and proximity to hull structure, cargo, fittings, human remains, or other diagnostic objects. Exact distribution can reveal a vessel’s construction, a cargo break, a fire, a collapse sequence, or later disturbance.

Field notes and chain of custody

Record who recovered, packed, transported, and received the object; the container and label number; water source; temperature if measured; and any change in condition. Keep copies of original notes and photographs. Add treatment dates, operators, materials, solutions, test results, and decisions to the same object record.

Temporary storage and transport

Use a chemically inert, sealable container large enough that the object is not bent or crushed. Polyethylene or polypropylene containers are commonly suitable choices, but a conservator should confirm compatibility for unusual materials, coatings, or solvents. Pad the object with inert supports that do not shed fibers or react with metal. Keep the original sediment in a separate labeled container if it may contain small associated finds or analytical evidence.

  • Keep the container closed enough to prevent evaporation and contamination, but follow professional advice if gas exchange or drainage is needed.
  • Keep objects chilled, dark, and away from heat, sunlight, and vibration. Do not freeze an unknown object.
  • Use separate containers for different objects and, where practical, different material classes.
  • Do not add bleach, vinegar, detergent, oil, household rust remover, alcohol, or an unapproved preservative.
  • Do not scrub, wire-brush, polish, scrape, drill, straighten, unfold, or remove “concretions” before imaging and examination.

For transport, immobilize the container, maintain the wet and cool condition, and provide the conservator with the field record. A leaking, warming, or mislabeled container is a treatment emergency because the object’s history and condition can become impossible to reconstruct.

How professionals identify an unknown wreck artifact

1. Context and visual examination

Identification begins with morphology and context rather than a guess based on color. Conservators and archaeologists examine dimensions, cross-section, construction, joins, tool marks, decoration, maker marks, inscriptions, wear, and residues. They compare those observations with the wreck’s history, cargo records, ship plans, and associated finds. Encrustation can hide the very feature needed for a typological identification, so the first name assigned to an object may be provisional.

2. Non-destructive imaging

X-radiography can show the outline and internal structure of a metal or composite object inside a concretion. It may reveal blades, fasteners, hollow spaces, or multiple objects fused together before mechanical cleaning. Imaging should precede any attempt to chip away a rock-like crust, especially on iron.

3. Material and corrosion analysis

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) can help identify material makeup, corrosion products, surface details, and coatings. X-ray energy spectrometry, commonly called EDX, can provide more precise elemental information for metals and help distinguish alloys. The appropriate method depends on the question, the object’s condition, and whether sampling can be avoided.

4. Historical and scientific studies

Depending on the research question, specialists may use artifact typology and distribution, radiometric dating, dendrochronology, wood identification, soil and sediment studies, or analysis of pollen, seeds, bone, shell, and other organic remains. A date from a wood sample, for example, does not automatically date the wreck or prove when the object entered it; the result must be interpreted with construction, repairs, reuse, and site context.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

5. Iterative records

Identification should be updated as encrustation is removed or surfaces become visible. Preserve before-treatment, during-treatment, and after-treatment photographs; condition descriptions; drawings; analytical results; and the reasoning behind each intervention. A treatment that improves visibility but removes original surface evidence must be documented as a trade-off, not treated as a neutral cleaning step.

Material-specific preservation and treatment

Iron and steel

Saltwater accelerates iron corrosion. A concretion is not merely dirt: it can be a rock-like mixture of corrosion products, sediment, and marine material that traps nearby objects. Obtain X-rays before mechanical cleaning. Desalination commonly uses alkaline solutions, and electrolytic reduction may be appropriate for iron with a solid metal core, but both require conservator supervision, monitoring, and a disposal plan for contaminated solutions. After treatment and thorough drying under controlled conditions, a stable metal surface may receive a reversible protective wax or consolidant selected for the object and its future environment.

Copper alloys and other metals

Bronze, brass, copper, lead, tin, silver, and mixed alloys do not respond like iron. Identify the alloy and corrosion products before choosing an alkaline bath, inhibitor, electrolytic process, or mechanical method. EDX or related X-ray energy spectrometry can refine composition. A treatment suitable for an iron core may damage a copper alloy, remove patina, or worsen a lead or tin object.

Waterlogged wood

Waterlogged wood can be structurally weak even when it looks intact. Keep it fully supported and wet; never leave it partly exposed to air. One established approach uses polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a bulking agent, followed by freeze-drying to remove water while reducing shrinkage, warping, and cracking. Concentration, penetration time, drying schedule, and final support must be designed for the species, size, condition, and intended display environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leather, textiles, and paper

These materials are often among the most compromised underwater finds. Keep them supported, wet, dark, and chilled. Do not brush, unfold, separate layers, or lift a textile by one edge. Conservators may need temporary backing, waterlogged storage, specialized cleaning, and gradual drying or freeze-drying. Small detached fragments should remain with their object record rather than being discarded as debris.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Glass and ceramics

Glass and high-fired ceramics often survive better than organics, but they can retain salts and have weakened surfaces. Porous ceramic bodies may require desalination followed by controlled drying. Rapid evaporation can drive salt crystallization, flaking, and cracking. Glass may have leached or iridescent layers that are part of its condition history; polishing or aggressive cleaning can remove them permanently.

Composite objects

A sword, tool, weapon, fitting, or piece of equipment may combine iron, wood, leather, textile, glass, and non-ferrous metal. Components may need different baths, supports, or drying schedules. Disassembly should occur only when a conservator determines that it is necessary and records the original relationships, fasteners, residues, and order of removal.

Choosing a treatment: a practical decision framework

A defensible treatment balances preservation of information against the risk and resources of intervention. Professionals assess the following before selecting a method:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Questions to answer
Material and porosity Is it metal, wood, leather, textile, paper, glass, ceramic, or a composite? How readily can water and salts move through it?
Salt and corrosion load Are chlorides, active corrosion, efflorescence, or soluble salts present, and how will they be monitored?
Structural integrity Can the object support itself, or does it need a tray, mesh, foam, or custom mount?
Information preserved Will cleaning expose a diagnostic mark, or remove surface, residue, patina, tool marks, or associated sediment?
Reversibility Can the intervention be reversed or adjusted if new evidence appears?
Intervention risk Could pH, electricity, solvents, heat, pressure, or mechanical force damage another component?
Facilities and staff Are ventilation, drainage, deionized water, climate control, chemical storage, monitoring equipment, and trained personnel available?
Time and cost Can the owner or repository support a treatment that may take months or years, plus long-term monitoring?
Storage and display What stable temperature, relative humidity, light level, mount, and inspection schedule will prevent renewed deterioration?

“Cleaning” is therefore not a single step. It may mean imaging, gentle removal of loose sediment, desalination, corrosion stabilization, consolidation, controlled drying, mounting, or no intervention beyond stable storage. The least destructive option that answers the archaeological question is often preferable.

What a professional conservation report should contain

A complete record allows another specialist to understand what was found, what changed, and how to care for it in the future. Include:

  • Desk-based site history, ownership and permit information, and the reason for recovery.
  • A master site map, artifact-position maps, interpreted survey data, and a description of search and recovery methods.
  • In-situ and post-recovery photographs, scales, orientation references, drawings, and measurements.
  • Object descriptions, condition assessments, material identifications, and links to associated finds.
  • Analytical methods and results, including imaging, FTIR, EDX or other elemental analysis, dating, wood identification, and sediment studies where used.
  • Every conservation treatment, solution, concentration, equipment setting, exposure time, rinse, drying stage, consolidant, coating, and deviation from the plan.
  • Condition before and after treatment, remaining risks, storage and display recommendations, and an inspection schedule.
  • Repository, curation, ownership, access, and location information, including who is responsible for future care.

The National Park Service recommends a final report that describes field methods, laboratory analyses, conservation treatments, findings, and future recommendations. This is not paperwork added after the real work; it is how the object’s evidence remains usable.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Why it causes harm Safer alternative
Leaving the object on a towel to dry Salt crystallization, shrinkage, cracking, warping, and active corrosion can begin before identification. Keep it wet, cool, dark, supported, labeled, and sealed while arranging conservation.
Scrubbing or polishing a concretion It can destroy corrosion layers, tool marks, coatings, residues, or concealed objects. Photograph, X-ray, and assess before any controlled cleaning.
Using vinegar, bleach, oil, detergent, or rust remover Household chemicals can alter corrosion products, stain materials, introduce contaminants, or make later treatment harder. Use only a conservator-approved solution and record its composition.
Mixing finds in one container Objects can abrade one another, exchange corrosion products, and lose their archaeological associations. Separate by object and material, with unique labels and linked records.
Assuming color proves material Marine deposits and corrosion can disguise iron, bronze, glass, ceramic, or composite construction. Combine context, morphology, imaging, and material analysis.
Selling or exporting immediately Ownership, protected-site, reporting, export, and cultural-heritage rules may apply. Contact the responsible heritage authority before transfer or publication.

When to seek urgent professional advice

Contact a conservator promptly if the object is drying, warming, shedding flakes or powder, developing orange or green corrosion, splitting, collapsing, emitting an unusual odor, or containing textile, leather, paper, wood, human remains, ammunition, fuel residue, or an unknown chemical. Do not open sealed containers that may contain hazardous residues without appropriate safety advice. A professional can also determine whether the safest action is continued wet storage, a controlled water change, immediate imaging, quarantine, or transfer to a specialist facility.

The essential rule

Preserve the context, not just the object. Keep the find wet, cool, dark, labeled, separated, and supported; document its position and condition; identify it with the least destructive methods; and involve a qualified nautical conservator and the responsible heritage authority before treatment, transfer, sale, export, or public disclosure of location. The most reliable identification usually comes from the combination of site distribution, imaging, material science, and historical comparison—not appearance alone.
