How to Preserve and Display Original Video Game Artwork Safely

The safest way to preserve original video game box art, manuals, inserts, posters, and packaging is to keep the originals in dark, stable storage and display a high-quality reproduction. If you must display an original, use UV-filtering glazing, an acid-free or pH-neutral window mat with spacers, low and controlled light, and a stable indoor environment. Paper-based game artwork is light-sensitive: prolonged exposure can fade inks, yellow paper, cause discoloration, and make sheets brittle.

Choose what you are actually displaying

Before buying a frame, decide whether the object is an original, a reproduction, or a digital access copy. This choice determines how much environmental and handling risk you accept.

Option Light and UV protection Humidity and temperature stability Physical support and reversibility Visibility and glare Removal and legal considerations
Original in a frame Requires UV-filtering glazing, low-intensity light, no direct sun, and limited display time. Even filtered light causes cumulative damage. Needs a stable room rather than an attic, garage, damp basement, heater, leak-prone area, or exterior wall. Use a window mat or spacers so glazing never touches the paper. Mount without pressure-sensitive adhesives or irreversible alteration. Shows the authentic surface, printing, folds, and wear, but glazing can reflect windows and lights. Can be removed for inspection, but every handling cycle adds risk. Keep a condition record and rotate it.
High-quality reproduction Still benefits from UV protection, but the valuable original remains out of the light. Normal stable indoor conditions are generally easier to maintain. Can be mounted more freely because the source object is not being altered. Provides everyday viewing with less concern about fading the collectible. Use a scan or photograph for routine access. Permission may still be required to publish, distribute, sell prints, or use the image commercially.
Original in dark storage with a digital surrogate Offers the strongest long-term protection because the paper is not exposed during viewing. Use monitored, stable storage and archival enclosures. Store flat when the structure permits, or support the object when it does not. Avoid unnecessary disassembly. The screen or printed surrogate cannot show every physical characteristic, but it is ideal for cataloging and reference. Usually the easiest option for repeated access. Keep provenance, condition, and rights information with the file.

The National Archives summarizes the conservation logic this way: “The best protection from light is to display copies of the originals and keep the originals in a box.” The Library of Congress likewise says that long-term or permanent display of paper-based materials is not recommended. A frame can slow damage; it cannot make light exposure harmless.

Set a stable environment before framing

Temperature and relative humidity (RH) affect paper, adhesives, inks, coatings, and any media stored alongside the artwork. Stability matters more than chasing a single perfect number. Avoid rapid swings and keep the collection away from sunlight, heating vents, radiators, plumbing, and rooms that routinely become damp or hot.

Home storage range

For home video-material storage, National Archives guidance reviewed in 2023 gives 55–70 °F and 30–55% RH. This is a practical storage range, not a guarantee that every paper, adhesive, or cartridge will behave identically. Use a digital hygrometer data logger to see daily and seasonal changes rather than relying on a single reading.

Exhibit or loan range

For institutional exhibit loans, National Archives technical guidance specifies 65–75 °F and 35–50% RH plus or minus 5%. It also limits ultraviolet exposure to no more than 10 microwatts per lumen and generally limits exposure to 10 hours per day. These tighter values describe controlled exhibit conditions; do not treat them as a universal household requirement or as permission for continuous display.

Mold-risk monitoring

National Archives mold guidance recommends routinely monitoring RH, preferably around 45–55% to reduce germination risk and below 65% as a ceiling. A brief excursion is not the same as sustained dampness, but repeated readings near or above the ceiling require corrective action. Never place a box against a leaking wall or in a basement simply because the room feels cool.

Build a frame that does not damage the artwork

Use conservation materials and make every contact point reversible. A standard poster frame with ordinary glass, cardboard backing, and adhesive tape can accelerate fading, transfer acids, trap moisture, or physically abrade a fragile cover.

  1. Inspect and document the item. Photograph both sides, note tears, folds, stains, missing pieces, inscriptions, detached layers, and existing repairs, and record dimensions. Do not flatten a folded or brittle piece merely to make it fit.
  2. Select glazing with UV filtering. UV-filtering acrylic or glass reduces ultraviolet exposure. Acrylic is lighter and safer from breakage; anti-static acrylic is appropriate when the media is friable or easily attracts loose particles. UV filtering does not eliminate visible-light fading, so light intensity and display duration still matter.
  3. Choose a conservation mat. Cotton-rag or chemically purified, acid-free/pH-neutral mat board is appropriate. Avoid ordinary acidic cardboard, wood-based backing, and unknown decorative papers that can discolor the artwork over time.
  4. Create an air gap. Use a window mat or archival spacers so the artwork cannot touch the glazing. The gap prevents condensation, sticking, abrasion, and transfer of surface material when temperature or humidity changes.
  5. Support the sheet without permanent adhesive. A conservator can select a reversible attachment method for the specific paper and condition. Do not improvise with pressure-sensitive tape, household glue, spray adhesive, or double-sided mounting products.
  6. Use a clean, stable backing and sealed frame. The backing should support the object without bending it. A well-fitted frame helps limit dust and pests, but it is not a substitute for RH control.
  7. Secure the finished frame. Anchor it against tipping, theft, vibration, and accidental contact. Keep it out of reach of pets, children, and areas where a chair or door can strike it.
  8. Label the display record. Keep the object identifier, owner, source, condition, framing materials, installation date, and planned removal date with your collection records. That information makes rotation and future conservation decisions possible.

Search terms such as UV-filtering acrylic sheet for picture frames, museum mat board, and archival polyester sleeve describe material categories, not a guarantee of quality. Exact brands, prices, and affiliate availability are not established here; verify that a product is genuinely acid-free or pH-neutral and that its UV performance is documented.

Control light and limit display time

Light damage is cumulative. A print that looks fine after a week can still be receiving an irreversible dose that becomes visible months or years later.

  • Keep the frame away from direct daylight. Block or shade nearby windows and do not position the artwork where a sunbeam moves across it during the day.
  • Avoid unfiltered fluorescent sources and other high-UV lamps. Use low-intensity room lighting and switch it off when the room is not in use.
  • Do not assume UV-filtering glazing makes a sunny wall safe. UV is only one part of the light spectrum that can fade dyes and inks.
  • Use a timer, occupancy switch, or exhibit schedule so lights are on only when visitors are present.
  • Rotate sensitive originals and favor short display periods. Return them to dark storage and substitute a reproduction for routine viewing.
  • Inspect the item at each rotation for new fading, yellowing, embrittlement, cockling, adhesive failure, or insect activity, and update the condition record.

Store manuals, jackets, inserts, and loose art correctly

Use suitable enclosures

Place manuals, jackets, inserts, maps, posters, stickers, and other loose paper in acid-free envelopes, archival boxes, or dedicated files. An acid-free archival box keeps light out and reduces dust, but it still needs a dry, stable room. Archival polyester sleeves can provide a transparent barrier for appropriate items; avoid sleeves that create static or press against friable surfaces.

Choose flat or supported storage

Keep a sheet flat when its structure permits and when the box does not force it to bend. A folded, layered, or three-dimensional package should be supported rather than crushed flat. Heavy objects should not rest on manuals or inserts, and boxes should not be overfilled so that removal requires pulling on a paper edge.

Handle with the least force

Use clean, dry hands for ordinary stable paper, or appropriate gloves when the material or a conservator specifically calls for them. Support folded, brittle, or oversized pieces with both hands or a rigid board. Do not drag paper across a table, press down on raised ink, or repeatedly refold a crease.

Keep paper and media together only when that is safe

Separate paper from cartridges, discs, batteries, or other media when separation reduces moisture transfer, abrasion, or chemical risk. Do not disassemble a package if doing so would destroy its identity, remove original context, or cause damage. Record any separation so the relationship between the game, manual, packaging, and inclusions remains clear.

Avoid irreversible household fixes

Never use pressure-sensitive tape, household glue, lamination, or an untested cleaning fluid. Lamination permanently changes the object and can trap acids or moisture. If a repair seems necessary, isolate the item and consult a paper conservator instead of testing a product on the original.

Digitize the artwork for safe everyday access

A digital surrogate lets you inspect cover art, compare editions, and share a reference image without repeatedly exposing or handling the original. The Library of Congress describes videogame collections as including cartridges, discs, packaging, documentation, and magazines, and highlights the access challenges created by aging formats. Digitization should therefore preserve both the image and its context.

  1. Prepare a clean, stable setup. Work on a flat surface away from food, liquids, direct sun, and airborne dust. Do not force a curled or fragile item flat for scanning.
  2. Capture a high-resolution, color-managed master. Use a calibrated scanner when the object can safely lie flat; otherwise use a camera copy stand with even, diffuse light. Include a color target or scale when practical, and capture the entire object, edges, folds, and marks.
  3. Preserve an untouched master. Keep the original camera file or scan without cropping, sharpening, dust removal, or color “correction.” Make working derivatives for web viewing and routine catalog use.
  4. Record provenance and condition. Document who supplied the item, where it came from, the game title and edition, capture date, equipment, settings, dimensions, visible defects, and any treatment history.
  5. Link files to the catalog record. Use stable identifiers and consistent filenames. A University of Michigan workflow packages game files, manuals, maps, supporting materials, and metadata in an archival bag linked to the catalog record; the same principle helps a private collection retain context when files move between drives.
  6. Back up and verify. Keep at least one additional copy in a separate location, check that files open correctly, and retain checksums or another method of detecting silent corruption.
  7. Use the derivative for access. Display the reproduction on a monitor or print a viewing copy. Return the original to dark storage after capture.

A scan is not automatically free to publish. Image quality and copyright are separate questions: a technically excellent file can still reproduce protected artwork without permission.

Check rights before publishing or selling a scan

The Library of Congress rights statement says written permission from copyright owners is required for distribution, reproduction, or other use of protected items beyond fair use or statutory exemptions. Before posting a high-resolution scan, selling prints, using cover art in merchandise, or supplying images to a publication, identify the rights holder and check the law in the relevant jurisdiction.

  • Keep a record of the item’s source, ownership, and any license or written permission.
  • Distinguish private, noncommercial reference from public distribution or commercial use.
  • Do not assume that owning a cartridge, box, or manual transfers copyright in the artwork.
  • If permission is unavailable, use a lower-risk access strategy, such as private cataloging, a rights-cleared reproduction, or a description without a full-resolution image.

Respond safely to water, mold, and visible deterioration

Wet artwork

Move a wet item away from the collection without rubbing or stacking it against other paper. Keep it isolated, stabilize the room, and seek professional conservation advice. Do not close damp paper in an airtight plastic sleeve, apply heat, or press it under books; those actions can bond sheets together and encourage mold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Active or suspected mold

Isolate the item from the collection and avoid brushing active mold through the room. Keep people and air-handling equipment from spreading spores, lower excessive RH without creating a rapid shock, and obtain professional advice. Do not vacuum, wipe, or spray an irreplaceable cover with household chemicals.

Fading, embrittlement, or adhesive failure

Remove the original from display, photograph its condition, and store it flat or supported in an archival enclosure. A conservator can determine whether a backing, hinge, stain, or adhesive can be treated safely. Do not attempt to restore color digitally and then discard the unaltered master; retain both the physical object and the untouched digital capture.

Manage a collection as separate elements

Game packages are systems rather than single sheets. The Game Preservation Society’s 2026 manual describes element-based management of packages, media, manuals, posters, stickers, and other inclusions, with paper materials stored around 50–55% humidity and UV shielding. Treat that figure as a videogame-collection example, not a universal requirement for every home or every material. The broader rule is to document each element, its condition, its enclosure, and its relationship to the game.

The scale of the preservation problem explains why this discipline matters. The Strong National Museum of Play reported 25,000 imperiled artifacts in its 2023 Digital Preservation Handbook, including games created before 2005 on endangered media, and its collection page describes more than 60,000 artifacts and hundreds of thousands of archival materials. A private collection benefits from the same habits used by institutions: stable storage, clear identifiers, controlled access, and planned migration of information to readable formats.

Troubleshoot common display problems

Symptom Likely cause Immediate correction
Colors are fading or yellowing near the window Cumulative daylight or high-intensity room lighting Remove the original, document the condition, block the window, reduce light levels, and display a reproduction.
Paper is touching or sticking to the glazing No window mat or spacers; humidity or static may be worsening contact Stop handling the frame, keep it level, and have the object reframed with a proper air gap.
Edges curl or the sheet buckles Humidity fluctuation, uneven mounting, or pressure from an overfilled enclosure Move it to stable storage, remove pressure, and seek conservation advice before flattening.
Black, green, or fuzzy spots appear Possible active mold, often associated with sustained high RH Isolate the item, do not brush it indoors, and obtain professional advice.
A sleeve clings to the surface or lifts loose ink Static, unsuitable plastic, or friable media Stop sliding the item, use appropriate archival materials, and consult a conservator.
A scan looks different from the original Unmanaged color, uneven lighting, or an edited working file Retain the untouched master, recalibrate the capture setup, and create a documented derivative.
You want to post a high-resolution cover image Ownership of the physical item is being confused with copyright permission Identify the rights holder and obtain written permission unless a specific legal exception applies.

A practical preservation routine

For most collectors, the defensible routine is simple: photograph and catalog each artwork, make a color-managed master and a viewing copy, store the original in an acid-free enclosure in a stable dark room, and display the reproduction. If an original must appear in an exhibit, use UV-filtering glazing, a pH-neutral mat with spacers, low light, a monitored environment, a short installation period, and a written rotation date. That approach keeps the authentic object available while reserving its limited exposure budget for the moments when seeing the original truly matters.
