Preserve Comic Con apparel and collectibles by limiting light, handling, dust, moisture, and physical strain—and by choosing storage or display methods that suit each object’s materials and condition. A fragile costume, a comic book, and a signed mixed-media prop need different support and enclosures; there is no single “archival” solution that fits them all.
Start by deciding what to store and what to display
Display offers visibility, but it increases exposure to light, dust, handling, and possible damage. Storage reduces many of those risks, though it still requires an appropriate enclosure and stable location. Light damage is cumulative: textiles can fade and become brittle, and paper collectibles should be kept away from direct or intense light. The Library of Congress notes, “In most cases, conservation treatment cannot reverse light damage.” Library of Congress guidance on paper care

Before choosing a box, frame, sleeve, or mount, identify the item’s materials and condition. A signed prop, synthetic costume, comic, and mixed-media collectible may respond differently to the same material or environment. If an object is fragile, valuable, or made from materials you cannot identify, get condition-specific advice before cleaning, repairing, or enclosing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreserve apparel without straining the garment
Choose flat or hanging storage according to the garment
Handle a collectible garment only when necessary. Clean hands reduce transfer of oils and perspiration, and removing jewelry helps prevent snags. Avoid wearing fragile collectible apparel for ordinary use.

Store weak, heavy, beaded, or bias-cut garments flat where possible. Their weight or construction can make hanging stressful: gravity may stretch or distort the textile. If hanging is suitable, use a padded support that distributes the garment’s weight rather than a narrow, hard hanger. The right choice depends on the garment’s structure and condition.
Use a supported, labelled storage box
A labelled box makes it easier to identify an item without repeated handling. Use suitable tissue to support the garment and help protect it from dust and pollutants. Keep the box closed and out of direct light. For textile collections, the Canadian Conservation Institute describes a three-month maximum display period as an example of limited rotation—not as a universal rule for every household collectible. Mount garments carefully for display
A displayed garment needs support tailored to its shape and condition. Consider a custom mannequin or padded mount that supports the textile without pulling at seams, shoulders, or fragile details. Limit the display period and return the garment to suitable storage to reduce cumulative exposure.
Protect comics and other paper collectibles
Handle comics with care
Use clean hands and a clean work surface, and keep food and drink away. Avoid opening a comic beyond 180 degrees or folding it back on itself. Do not use tape, glue, rubber bands, paper clips, or dog-ear folds. The Library of Congress calls careful handling of functional items such as comics “one of the more effective, cost-efficient, and easily achieved preservation measures.” Library of Congress guidance on comic books

Match the enclosure to the paper and ink
Possible enclosures include acid- and lignin-free folders, four-flap folders, document boxes, and supportive sleeves. Material choice matters: buffered paper can help neutralize acids, but some inks may be sensitive to alkaline pH. Clear polyester film is another option, but static can lift crumbs from brittle comic paper. For a valuable or fragile issue, consider its paper and ink condition before selecting an enclosure rather than assuming one sleeve or backing is appropriate for every comic.
The Library of Congress recommends a cool, clean, stable, relatively dry environment and about 35% relative humidity for comic-book storage. That figure is its recommendation for comics, not a universal target for every type of collectible. Keep paper away from direct or intense light, radiators, and vents.

Choose a safe display area and storage location
Assess temperature, relative humidity, light, surrounding materials, physical support, and security before displaying an object. Avoid direct sunlight and intense light, and keep collectibles away from radiators and heat vents. A secure case or frame can help limit dust and handling, but only if its materials are suitable and the object is supported without strain. Library of Congress collection-care guidance

Buy supplies for the object, not the label
For textiles, suitable supplies may include archival acid-free boxes and unbuffered acid-free tissue when appropriate. For comics, select sleeves, folders, or boxes according to the item’s size, structure, ink, and condition. Avoid PVC and unidentified plastics around collections. The Library of Congress identifies polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester/PET without added slip or coating agents as stable plastics for bags, sleeves, or bins; that general material guidance does not mean every clear plastic display product is suitable for every collectible. Library of Congress collection-care guidance
- Check that a textile has adequate support in storage or on display.
- For a comic, consider how the enclosure material interacts with its paper and inks.
- For a mixed-material collectible, identify the materials before choosing a case, mount, or cleaning method.
- Use storage or limited display to reduce exposure and handling, and avoid unstable or damp locations.
Preventive care can slow deterioration but cannot stop it entirely. As the Canadian Conservation Institute puts it, “Preventive conservation measures can slow down the rate of these deterioration processes but cannot halt them completely.” Canadian Conservation Institute textile and costume guidance
