Short answer: You do not need to throw away your Valheim world for the Deep North. Valheim 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026, and existing saves remain playable. For the new biome to generate correctly, travel to areas no player has explored; Iron Gate describes an unexplored area as roughly a 500-metre radius around places nobody has visited. A new world is Iron Gate’s recommended way to experience the update, but it is optional.
Before loading a changed version or a modified setup, make a separate copy of your world and character saves, check whether your mods have been updated, and bring the game to version 1.0.16 or later. That patch fixed a Deep North terrain-modification bug, although some visible seams may still need manual repair.

What the Deep North update means for an existing world
The Deep North is part of the released Valheim 1.0 update, not a future expansion that requires a special migration process. Iron Gate says a world created before 1.0 will receive new content and can continue from its existing state. The important limitation is where that content is generated: newly added biome terrain works properly only in areas that were not explored before the update.
Iron Gate’s July 1, 2026, 1.0 FAQ puts the rule plainly: “As usual, your world will receive new content even if it was created before the update, although biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored.” The same FAQ says, “However, we always recommend that you start the game over from scratch to get the best possible experience.” Those statements describe a recommendation, not a forced reset.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore a bright Norse realm: discover dungeons, slay legendary beasts, and build anywhere as you explore formidable, procedurally-generated lands on your quest to take on Ragnarok.
- Face colossal game-changers: protect the speed of Yggdrasil from a nightly invasion of helthings, and work together with your tribe to withstand the ever-looming threat of the jotnar.
- Forge your Viking Legend: choose your class and take the battle into the wilds as you seek resources to craft epic armor and mighty weaponry. Then, unleash powerful abilities and prepare clever village defenses to give your enemies some nasty surprises.
- Rally the tribe: when the giants arrive, it takes a village to bring them down! Adventure through midgard solo, or form a tribe of up to 10 players in online pve co-op.
- Keep up the fight: throughout the year, limited time seasonal events bring bigger challenges and even mightier treasures to the endgame of midgard, including new ways to progress and unlockable rewards for use across every game.
You therefore have two sound options:
- Keep your established world, protect its builds and progress, and seek the Deep North in untouched territory.
- Create a fresh world for the cleanest version of Iron Gate’s intended 1.0 journey.
You can also use an existing character in a new world. Iron Gate confirms that the world and character choices are separate; it does not say that every character must be discarded when starting a new map.

| Choice | What you keep | How new Deep North content appears | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continue an existing world | Existing buildings, map progress and the history of that save | Travel to areas that no player has explored; previously explored terrain is not promised to regenerate as new biome terrain | Players who want continuity and do not want to rebuild |
| Start a new world | Your character can still be used if you choose | Fresh world generation follows the new 1.0 setup from the beginning | Players who want Iron Gate’s recommended fresh experience |
The sources do not quantify how long rebuilding takes, so treat the new-world option as a gameplay and continuity decision rather than a guaranteed time saving or time loss.
How unexplored areas work
“Unexplored” means more than an empty-looking patch
Iron Gate’s general FAQ describes an unexplored area as one where no player has set foot. It gives an approximate radius of about 500 metres around a visited location. The radius is guidance, not a precise per-world boundary calculator: do not assume that measuring exactly 500 metres from a marker will predict the generation result for every seed.
Your earlier travel can therefore affect more land than the strip you remember walking across. Sailing past a coast, scouting by boat, touching down briefly, or revealing terrain around a base may all mean that the surrounding area is no longer considered untouched. Updates that alter fixed world content are limited to unexplored areas partly to avoid damaging player-built structures.
Plan an approach from known territory
- Load the old save only after making a backup copy.
- Look at the world map and identify a direction that has not been visited by any player on the save.
- Use the least-explored route toward the Deep North rather than crossing a familiar coast and expecting it to transform.
- Once you reach genuinely new territory, allow the game to generate the area normally before making major construction or terrain changes.
Do not treat a blank-looking map as proof that the ground is untouched. Map visibility and player presence are related but are not a substitute for Iron Gate’s approximate unexplored-area rule.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOption 1: Keep your established world
Keeping the old save is the right choice when your bases, roads, portals, farms or long-term progression matter more than restarting the complete 1.0 journey. The save remains usable after the launch, and Iron Gate explicitly allows players to head straight for the Deep North on an existing world.
Preparation checklist for an old save
- Copy the world and character save files to a separate location before changing the game version or mod setup.
- Write down which characters, worlds and server profiles belong together so you can restore the intended combination if something goes wrong.
- Mark the edges of your known travel area on the in-game map. Treat nearby land as potentially explored even if no base was built there.
- Choose a route that avoids regions you or another player already visited.
- Update the game before judging whether a Deep North area or its terrain is behaving correctly.
The goal is not to reset the map. It is to preserve what you built while giving the new generator untouched space in which to work.
Option 2: Start a fresh world
A new world is the cleanest way to follow Iron Gate’s recommendation. All terrain is generated as part of the 1.0 setup, so you do not have to remember which coastlines, islands or routes were exposed before the update.
What you can carry into the new start
Iron Gate’s FAQ confirms that you may use an existing character in a new world. That lets you separate the decision to rebuild a map from the decision to create a new character. The FAQ does not state that every piece of world progress must be repeated or that a particular character setup is required, so choose the combination that matches your preferred challenge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a fresh world is preferable
- You want the Deep North and other 1.0 content integrated into a complete new map.
- Your old map has been extensively explored in every direction.
- You play with a group that wants a shared restart point.
- You would rather avoid uncertainty about which regions were exposed before the update.
A fresh world does mean giving up the physical layout of the old map. Preserve the old save even if you start over; it remains your fallback and a record of your previous work.
Back up saves before changing versions or mods
Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ does not present a special mandatory backup workflow. Making a separate copy is still prudent data care whenever a game version, world file or mod arrangement changes.
- Exit Valheim completely rather than copying files while the game is running.
- Locate the world and character save data using the save-management location appropriate to your platform.
- Copy the relevant files to a different folder or storage location, keeping the original names and file structure intact.
- Label the copy with the date, game version and whether mods were enabled.
- Keep at least one untouched copy until you have loaded the world, travelled to new terrain and confirmed that your important structures are present.
A backup is useful only if it is separate from the live save. Do not overwrite your only copy while testing a new loader or troubleshooting terrain.
Check mods before you launch
The official 1.0 FAQ says that Valheim has no official mod support, that compatibility is not guaranteed, and that mods may take time to become compatible with the new release. A mod that worked before September 9, 2026, is not automatically safe on 1.0.

Use a controlled compatibility check
- Record the mod list and loader version used by the old world.
- Check each mod’s current release notes through its own distribution channel.
- Do not assume that a loader, map tool or world-editing utility works simply because the game opens.
- Test first with a copied world, not your only live save.
- If the game crashes, shows missing assets or changes world behavior, disable the suspect mod set and retest on the clean game version.
Do not promise that any named mod is currently compatible without a separate, current verification. If a mod is essential to a server or save, wait for a version explicitly marked for your installed 1.0 build or be prepared to play that world without the mod.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Update to 1.0.16 before diagnosing terrain
Iron Gate’s September 25, 2026, version 1.0.16 notes identify a bug that could cause terrain modifications to revert after unloading a Deep North area in some cases. Update before deciding that your save is permanently corrupted or that the biome failed to generate.
The patch does not guarantee that every visible transition will look perfect. Iron Gate notes that seams may still require manual repair with a pickaxe, hoe or by walking over snow. That is patch-specific guidance, not evidence that every Deep North world is damaged.

After updating
- Confirm the game reports the current installed version in its launcher or title screen.
- Load the backed-up copy first if you are testing a heavily modified world.
- Travel into an area that was not explored before 1.0.
- Unload and reload the area once, then inspect any terrain you modified.
- If a seam remains, use the tools Iron Gate identifies—pickaxe, hoe or simply walking over snow—to smooth the local transition.
Prepare a multiplayer world or server
Every player should agree on the world strategy. If the group keeps an old world, ask whether anyone has already travelled through the intended route; one player’s exploration can affect the area available for new generation. If the group starts a new world, decide whether everyone will use new characters or whether some players will bring existing ones.
Make sure the host, dedicated server and joining clients are on compatible game versions. Valheim 1.0 is available across the supported platforms, and the official announcement and FAQ discuss crossplay, but they do not provide a universal server-upgrade procedure. Follow the hosting platform’s own update process rather than applying an unverified file or command.
Group checklist
- Agree on one world file and keep a dated backup before the first post-launch session.
- Tell every player which regions are off-limits until the group is ready to generate them.
- Record the exact game version and mod list for all participants.
- Use the same clean-versus-modded setup when testing a suspected terrain problem.
Verify the world after the first Deep North trip
A short verification run can distinguish normal unexplored-area behavior from a version or mod problem.
- Enter the world and confirm that your principal base, portals and storage areas are intact.
- Travel toward a direction no player has previously visited.
- Let the game finish loading the new area before placing permanent structures.
- Leave and reload once, especially if you have altered the ground.
- Check that terrain changes remain and that any seam is limited to a local visual or surface transition.
Keep your backup until this sequence succeeds. Do not delete the old world merely because the first route you tried was already explored.

Troubleshooting common problems
The Deep North does not appear where I expected
First ask whether the location was explored before 1.0. New biome generation is not promised in previously visited terrain, including the approximate surrounding area described by Iron Gate. Try an untouched route instead of repeatedly reloading the same familiar coast.
Terrain changes disappeared after I unloaded the area
Update to version 1.0.16 or later, then retest without mods on a copied save. That release fixed a reported Deep North terrain-reversion bug. If the problem continues, preserve the affected save and avoid further construction there while isolating the version or mod cause.
I see a seam between snow and another surface
Iron Gate says some seams may still need manual repair. Try a pickaxe, hoe or walking over snow in the affected spot. A seam by itself is not a reason to reset the entire world.
The game crashes after the update
Use the backup to separate save damage from compatibility trouble. Disable mods, launch the clean 1.0 build and test a copy of the world. If the clean version works, reintroduce mods one at a time only after their maintainers identify a compatible release.
Another player explored the route before we were ready
That route may no longer qualify as untouched. Choose a different direction or create a new world. The 500-metre figure is approximate, so do not rely on a narrow boundary calculation to recover a partially explored region.
A practical decision path
- Do your existing builds matter more than a fresh 1.0 journey? Keep the old world, back it up and travel through genuinely unexplored territory.
- Has most of the map already been visited? A new world removes uncertainty about old exploration.
- Do you use mods? Check compatibility first and test on a copy because official support and compatibility are not guaranteed.
- Have you installed 1.0.16 or later? Do that before investigating Deep North terrain reversion.
- Are you playing with others? Align world choice, exploration boundaries, game version and mod list before anyone scouts ahead.
The essential preparation is therefore organizational, not material: choose the save strategy, protect the files, control exploration, update the game and isolate mods. No special accessory, consumable or physical item is required to make a world ready for the Deep North.
