For a long session, prepare the console before you launch a game: give it unobstructed airflow, remove dust safely, make sure a controller is ready, and choose a power mode that matches your need for downloads, charging, remote access, and energy savings. The exact guidance differs by platform. Sony publishes a 10 cm ventilation clearance and PS5 cleaning instructions; the Xbox material covered here explains power modes but does not establish an Xbox-specific clearance measurement.
Start with a five-minute pre-session check
Before starting a long game, run through the checks that prevent the most common interruptions.

- Placement: Confirm that the PS5 is not inside a cramped cabinet, its vents are clear, and it has at least 10 cm (4 inches) between the console and a wall. Do not put it on long-fibre carpet or cover it with cloth. For Xbox, keep the vents unobstructed, but do not treat Sony’s 10 cm figure as an Xbox specification.
- Dust: If you can see dust around a PS5 vent, shut the console down, disconnect the AC cable, let it cool, and use a low-powered handheld vacuum around the vents.
- Controller: Charge the controller you intend to use and, if possible, have a second charged controller available.
- Updates and downloads: Decide whether games or system software should update before you play. Configure PS5 rest-mode connectivity and USB power if those features are needed. On Xbox, check the current power and active-hours settings.
- Power choice: Select a mode that fits the session. A ready-to-resume console is convenient, while a shutdown or energy-saving mode uses less electricity.
Do this check before the console becomes warm. It is easier to reposition equipment, clean a vent, or change a setting before a multi-hour session than after a warning or an interrupted download.

Give a PS5 enough room to breathe
Use Sony’s clearance guidance
Sony’s PS5 setup guidance says to leave at least 10 cm (4 inches) between the console and a wall. The support guidance also says to maintain at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Treat this as a minimum, not as a reason to press the console against furniture on the remaining sides.

Put the console where air can move freely around its vents. Avoid a tightly enclosed shelf, a narrow gap between books or other equipment, and any position in which a cable, object, or furniture panel blocks an intake or exhaust opening. Do not place the PS5 on long-fibre carpet, where fibres can restrict airflow or collect around openings, and do not drape a cloth over it while it is operating or in rest mode.
Choose a stable surface
Use the stand and orientation appropriate to your PS5 model, and place the console on a stable, level surface. Leave enough room to reach the power button, USB ports, and disc drive if your model has one. A layout that makes the console difficult to reach encourages hurried cable changes and makes routine dust checks less likely.
Do not confuse normal fan noise with a failure
PlayStation says the PS5 fan can temporarily run faster during some games and applications to cool the system. A brief increase in fan speed is therefore not automatically a fault. The important distinction is persistence: if the console repeatedly reports overheating, shuts down, or continues behaving abnormally after it has adequate space and has cooled, stop relying on improvised fixes and contact PlayStation Support.

Use this sequence before vacuuming
- Save your game and close the application.
- Turn the PS5 off completely rather than leaving it running or in rest mode.
- Disconnect the AC power cable before cleaning.
- Wait for the console to cool.
- Use a low-powered or handheld vacuum around the external vents to collect loose dust.
Sony’s safety guidance recommends a handheld vacuum for dust trapped underneath the covers. If your model’s safety guide permits cover removal, follow that guide exactly and only after the console has cooled. Do not force a panel, probe inside the console, or modify the cooling system. A low-powered handheld vacuum is an optional tool for the vent-cleaning step; an accessory fan or generic cooling stand is not established as necessary by the guidance used here.

What not to do
- Do not clean while the AC cable is connected.
- Do not put a wet cloth, liquid cleaner, or compressed material into a vent.
- Do not operate the console under a cover intended for storage.
- Do not open or modify the console to solve a temperature problem that persists after correct placement and cleaning.
For an Xbox Series X or Series S, the official material covered here does not establish a model-specific cleaning procedure. Keep its vents unobstructed and use the current Xbox support documentation for any cleaning instruction rather than applying PS5 cover-removal steps to it.
Prepare controllers, downloads, and updates
Charge a PS5 controller in advance
A long session is a poor time to discover that the only controller is nearly empty. Charge it before launching the game. If you want the PS5 to charge a controller while it is resting, enable USB power in the rest-mode settings; the available behavior depends on the console model and the setting you choose.
Finish downloads before play
On PS5, rest mode can keep the console connected to the internet so it can download content and automatically update games and system software. Enable those options only when they are useful to you. If you leave the console disconnected in rest mode, downloads and updates will wait until it is active again.

Keep a backup plan for the controller
A second charged controller, or a charging cable placed where you can reach it without moving the console, prevents a battery interruption from becoming a ventilation or cable-management problem. Do not route a cable across an airflow opening or place the console where the cable can pull it toward an edge.
Set up PS5 rest mode for the way you play
Find the relevant settings
On PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving. This area controls the time until the console enters rest mode and the features available while it is there.
Choose the rest-mode features you actually need:
- USB power: Allows the console to supply power to a connected controller for charging, subject to the options shown for your model.
- Internet connectivity: Lets the console remain connected so downloads can continue.
- Automatic updates: Allows games and system software to update while the console is resting when the required connectivity option is enabled.
The convenience has a cost: Sony notes that the more features you enable in rest mode, the more power the PS5 uses while resting. If you only need to charge a controller, there is no reason to enable every download and update option. If you want a game ready before the next session, enable the connectivity and update features and accept the additional standby consumption.
Choose an entry time that will not interrupt you
The time-until-rest setting is useful when you pause for a meal or leave the console unattended. Set it according to your routine, but remember that a download or update requiring the console to be active may not behave as expected if the console enters a state in which the necessary rest-mode feature is disabled.

Choose an Xbox power mode deliberately
Open the power menu
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire guidance places the relevant controls at Settings > General > Power options. The two decisions that matter most for a long-session setup are whether the console uses Shutdown (energy saving) or Sleep, and, if Sleep is selected, when the console should remain available.
Shutdown (energy saving)
Shutdown (energy saving) is intended to conserve power when the Xbox is not in use. It favors lower standby consumption over instant readiness. Choose it when the console can fully start before you play and you do not need it available for expected background activity.
Sleep and active hours
Sleep keeps the Xbox ready during the active hours you configure. Outside those hours, the console can shut down instead of remaining in its higher-readiness state. Set active hours to cover the time when you normally expect to start a session or need the console reachable, then let the system shut down outside that window.

Do not copy PS5 settings onto Xbox
PS5 rest-mode options and Xbox power options solve similar readiness problems, but they are not the same menu or the same power model. Sony’s USB and internet-rest-mode descriptions apply to PS5. Microsoft’s Shutdown, Sleep, and active-hours descriptions apply to Xbox. Configure each console in its own settings rather than assuming that a feature with a similar name behaves identically.

The Xbox material available for this guide explains power management but does not establish an official clearance distance or a detailed Series X|S cleaning procedure. The safe, supportable instruction is therefore limited: do not obstruct the vents, do not put the console in a cramped enclosure, and consult current Xbox support documentation for model-specific placement or cleaning requirements.
Do not quote the PS5 10 cm measurement as an Xbox requirement. The absence of a verified Xbox number here does not mean that airflow is unimportant; it means that a precise distance should come from Microsoft documentation for the specific model and current support version.

What to watch during a long session
PS5 fan behavior
If the PS5 fan briefly becomes louder during a demanding game or application, that can be normal cooling behavior. Check the console’s placement if the noise remains high, the vents are visibly dusty, or the console is in a restricted space. If overheating messages, shutdowns, or other persistent faults continue, end the session and contact PlayStation Support.
When to stop instead of troubleshooting mid-game
Do not keep playing through a repeated overheating warning or repeated shutdown. Turn the console off, let it cool, check the basic placement requirements, and clean only as described for that platform. If the problem returns, use manufacturer support. Opening or modifying the console can create additional damage and is not a substitute for diagnosis.

A practical setup sequence before a multi-hour session
- Choose the location. Put the console on a stable surface with unobstructed vents. For PS5, measure at least 10 cm from the wall and keep comparable free space around the sides.
- Inspect for dust. If the PS5 vents need attention, shut down, unplug, cool, and vacuum gently with a low-powered handheld device. For Xbox, use only current Xbox-specific cleaning guidance.
- Connect power safely. Make sure the power cable is secure without pulling the console or crossing a vent.
- Prepare the controller. Start with a full charge or connect a cable where it can be used without moving the console. Enable PS5 USB power in rest mode only if you need it.
- Set update behavior. On PS5, enable internet connectivity and automatic updates in rest mode if you want downloads completed before play. On Xbox, check the selected power mode and active-hours schedule.
- Start the session. Once placement, dust, controller, and power settings are ready, launch the game. If the PS5 fan briefly speeds up, allow it to regulate the system; if overheating or repeated shutdowns occur, stop and seek support.
Common mistakes and the correct fix
- Putting a PS5 in a closed entertainment unit: Move it into open space and maintain Sony’s 10 cm minimum clearance.
- Vacuuming a powered PS5: Shut down, disconnect the AC cable, and wait for the console to cool first.
- Assuming a louder fan means immediate failure: A temporary speed increase can be normal. Investigate only if the behavior persists or is accompanied by overheating or shutdowns.
- Leaving every PS5 rest-mode feature enabled by default: Keep only the USB, internet, and update functions you actually need because each enabled feature increases rest-mode power use.
- Using Sleep on Xbox without active hours: Configure the hours in which you expect the console to be ready, then let it shut down outside that period.
- Applying the PS5 10 cm rule to Xbox: Treat the platforms separately. Keep Xbox vents clear, but obtain any exact measurement from current Microsoft guidance.
When manufacturer support is the right next step
Support is appropriate when a console continues to overheat, shuts down unexpectedly, or behaves abnormally after you have corrected placement and performed the platform-approved cleaning steps. Do not recommend opening, modifying, or adding unverified cooling hardware as a first response. Give support the exact model, the conditions under which the problem occurs, and any warning shown on screen.
