The current US PlayStation Store listing gives the PS5 version a November 19, 2026 release date and shows a seven-day pre-load for the displayed editions. It does not publish an installation or download size, so there is no responsible way to promise that a particular number of gigabytes will be enough.
Use the steps below as a readiness checklist, then revisit your regional PlayStation Store page close to launch. Release information, pre-load timing, account requirements and other store conditions can change or differ by country.

What you should have ready before launch
A reliable preparation plan has four parts: storage, software updates, account access and a final launch-day check. None requires buying an accessory in advance. Start with the storage already installed in your console, because deleting or moving games may create enough room. Expansion is optional and should be based on your console revision and how many large games you keep installed.
- Storage: Check the free-space figure under Settings > Storage. Remove or move games you no longer need immediately, or install a compatible M.2 SSD if you want more PS5-playable space.
- System software: Confirm that the console reports the latest system software.
- Game software: Check updates for any installed game and allow time for downloads and installation.
- Account: Verify your PlayStation sign-in details, your two-step-verification method and your recovery information.
- Launch information: Recheck the local store listing for the release date, pre-load window, download size and any account or internet conditions that have been added or changed.
The US listing currently shows GTA VI for PS5, a November 19, 2026 release date and a seven-day pre-load for the editions displayed there. Those details are store information, not a guarantee that every region or edition will show identical timing.

Check how much PS5 storage is free
Use the built-in Storage screen
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Review the available-space figure and the categories using the drive.
Game and saved data are stored on the console’s built-in storage. The Storage screen is therefore the correct starting point, rather than estimating from the size of another game. Keep in mind that the official store listing for GTA VI does not state its download or installed size. Wait for an official figure before deciding that a specific amount of free space will be sufficient.
Decide how much headroom to leave
Do not plan to finish the download with only the exact advertised size available. A game can require space for the download process, installation and an update, and the final requirement can change before launch. Because no official GTA VI size is published in the current listing, the practical rule is to create as much headroom as your library allows and check the listing again when pre-load information is available.
If the Storage screen shows plenty of unused space after you remove games you have stopped playing, there is no need to buy an SSD simply for this release. If you routinely reach the limit, expansion can prevent repeated uninstall-and-reinstall cycles.

Free space without losing a purchase
Delete games you can reinstall
- Open Settings > Storage and choose the category containing installed games or applications.
- Select a title you no longer need installed.
- Choose the delete option and confirm only after checking that you selected the intended game.
Deleting an installed purchase removes its local installation, not your entitlement. Sony says purchased games can be downloaded again from your game library. That makes deletion the simplest way to make room when your internet connection can support a later re-download.
Move data when that suits your library
Sony supports moving game data to supported storage locations. Moving can be preferable to deleting when you expect to return to a game but need the internal drive for a new installation. Use the Storage controls to select the title and the available move option, then allow the transfer to finish before disconnecting any drive.

Review the item name and destination carefully. A move changes where the local data lives; it does not create a second playable copy. If the destination is USB extended storage, the play-from limitation described below still applies to PS5 games.
Protect saved progress while cleaning up
The Storage screen distinguishes installed game data from saved data. Do not delete saved data merely because you want to remove a game installation. If you are uncertain which category contains your progress, stop and inspect the item description before confirming. The goal is to remove or move an installation while preserving the saves you intend to keep.

Choose between built-in storage, an M.2 SSD and USB storage
These options solve different problems. The key question is not only capacity, but also whether a PS5 game can be launched from the location where you place it.

When clearing space is the better choice
- You need room for one release but normally have enough space.
- Your console revision or preferred SSD has not been checked against Sony’s requirements.
- You would rather avoid opening the console and installing hardware.
- Your internet connection makes re-downloading an occasional game acceptable.
When an M.2 SSD makes sense
- You keep several PS5 games installed and frequently run out of room.
- You want those PS5 games to remain launchable without copying them from USB.
- You are comfortable verifying the drive’s specification and installing it correctly.
When USB extended storage is enough
USB extended storage is useful as a holding area, especially for PS5 games you are not currently playing and for PS4 games you want to launch without moving them. It is not a substitute for an M.2 SSD if your requirement is to launch PS5 games directly from the added drive.
Install an M.2 SSD only after checking compatibility

- Physical size and clearance requirements, including room for heat dissipation.
These figures describe the cited CFI-71XX guide, not every PS5 revision or every product sold as an M.2 drive. Before purchasing, identify the model number on your console and check Sony’s requirements for that exact revision. Then verify the SSD’s interface, dimensions, capacity and heat-dissipation solution as a complete combination.

- Find your PS5 model or CFI number in the console information or on the console label.
- Open Sony’s documentation for that revision, rather than relying on a generic “PS5 compatible” description.
- Confirm that the SSD is an NVMe drive using PCIe Gen4 x4 where required.
- Check that its capacity falls within the revision’s supported range. For the cited CFI-71XX guide, that range is 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Measure the complete drive and heatsink assembly against the stated physical clearances.
- Confirm that the heatsink provides the required heat dissipation without exceeding the height or width limits.
Do not infer compatibility from the M.2 label alone. Interface, dimensions and cooling all matter, and a drive that fits one console revision may not meet another’s requirements.
What installation changes
Once a compatible M.2 SSD is installed and formatted through the PS5’s prompts, it can be used for PS5 game downloads and installations, and PS5 games can be launched from it. Treat the first setup as a storage-management decision: select the M.2 location when the console offers an installation destination, or move existing games there through the Storage settings.
Installing an SSD does not reveal the eventual GTA VI size. It simply gives you additional supported space. Continue to check the official store listing when the download and installation figures are published.
Understand the USB extended-storage limitation
USB extended storage and M.2 storage are not interchangeable in how PS5 games run. A PS5 game may be stored on USB extended storage, but it cannot be played directly from that drive. To play it, copy the game back to the PS5’s built-in storage or to a compatible M.2 SSD first. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.

Use USB storage without getting stuck
- Connect the supported USB extended-storage drive and let the PS5 recognize it.
- Use the Storage controls to move PS5 games you are not playing to USB, freeing internal or M.2 space.
- When you want to play one of those PS5 games, move it back to console storage or M.2 storage before starting it.
- Wait for the transfer to complete and confirm the game appears in the playable location.
This arrangement can preserve your downloads while keeping the faster, playable locations available for current titles. It also means you should plan transfer time if you move several games shortly before launch.
Update the PS5 system software
Check the installed system version
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Choose System.
- Open System Software.
- Select Console Information.
- Look for the status shown as Up to date.
Sony’s documented status label, “Up to date,” indicates that the latest system software is installed. If the console offers an update instead, install it before launch rather than waiting for a busy release-day period.
Check the game or application update
- Highlight the game or application on the home screen or in your library.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Check for Update.
- Let the download and installation complete before starting the game.
Starting an application or game also checks for its newest available version, according to Sony’s update instructions. The explicit menu check is still useful before release because it lets you see whether an update is waiting without opening the title.
Allow time for updates
System and game updates can be large, and a pre-load does not mean every launch-day patch has already been installed. Keep the console connected to the internet, leave sufficient storage for the download and installation process, and avoid beginning a move or deletion while an update is actively installing. The exact update size and timing for GTA VI have not been published in the current store information.
Confirm your PlayStation account and security method
Test the sign-in route you will need
Before launch, sign in to the PlayStation account that will own or access the game. Make sure you know the account’s sign-in information and can receive or generate the second factor if two-step verification is enabled. Fixing an inaccessible account is much harder during a release-day rush than it is beforehand.

Review security settings on PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account.
- Open Security.
- Review the account’s two-step-verification configuration.
Sony documents two-step verification through SMS or an authenticator app. Confirm that the phone number, device or authenticator you selected is still accessible. Keep account recovery information in a safe place so that losing a phone or changing devices does not leave you locked out.
Do not assume every online condition is universal
The US PlayStation Store wording says online features require a PlayStation account and that certain features or services may require an internet connection or registration for a Rockstar Games account, among other possible conditions. That conditional wording does not establish that a Rockstar account is needed for every feature, nor does it establish that the single-player game requires a permanent internet connection.
Read the product page for your country and edition, then check any in-game notice shown during setup. Treat account registration and internet requirements as feature-specific conditions unless the current regional listing says otherwise.

Use the pre-load window carefully
The current US listing shows a seven-day pre-load for the displayed editions. A pre-load lets an eligible purchase download before release, but it does not change the release lock or guarantee that all launch updates are included. The available day and time can vary by edition, region and later store updates.
- Confirm that your account is signed in and that the purchase or entitlement is attached to that account.
- Check the store page for the exact edition and region you use.
- When pre-load becomes available, start it from the library or product page.
- Watch the download and installation status, and resolve any storage warning before the release date.
- Check for a game update again after installation and before starting the title.
Do not quote a download-size estimate from another game or from an unofficial listing. The official US listing does not provide a GTA VI size, and a regional page may add or change that information later.
Final readiness checklist
- Storage: You opened Settings > Storage and know the available space.
- Cleanup: You deleted or moved games you can do without, while leaving the saved-data category untouched unless you deliberately intend to remove saves.
- Expansion: If you bought an M.2 SSD, you checked the exact PS5 revision, PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe requirement where applicable, 250 GB–8 TB range for the cited CFI-71XX guide, dimensions and heat dissipation.
- USB plan: You know that PS5 games on USB must be copied to console or M.2 storage before play, while PS4 games can run from USB.
- System update: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information reports Up to date.
- Game update: You highlighted the relevant title, pressed Options and selected Check for Update.
- Account: You tested PlayStation sign-in and can access your SMS or authenticator-app verification method.
- Recovery: Your account recovery information is stored safely.
- Store terms: You revisited your regional listing for the release date, pre-load timing, download size and any account or internet conditions.
With those checks complete, your PS5 is configured for the practical issues you can control. The remaining launch details—especially the final download size, edition-specific pre-load timing and regional service terms—must come from the current store listing when they are published.
