Do not rely on an old maximum or assume every event item follows the same expiry rule. Confirm the live capacity shown in the game and read the current event announcement, especially if you use Pokémon GO Plus + or expect event-exclusive rewards.

Why your bag matters during an event
A full Item Bag prevents the game from adding new items from PokéStops, Gyms, and battle rewards. That can turn a productive event route into a series of missed collections. The restriction applies whether the bag reaches its limit before you tap a location or fills during play: once there is no room, new item rewards cannot be stored until you create space.
Pokémon GO Plus + does not bypass this rule. Pokémon Support says the accessory will not spin a PokéStop’s Photo Disc when the Item Bag is full. If you plan to let the accessory collect while you walk, clearing space is part of the setup, not an optional extra.

Pokémon storage is a separate preparation issue. A crowded Pokémon list can make event catches harder to manage, but its counter is different from the Item Bag counter. Check both screens instead of assuming that adding Item Bag capacity also expands Pokémon storage.
Check both capacity counters before clearing anything
Inspect the Item Bag
- Open the game’s Main Menu.
- Choose Items.
- Read the total and maximum displayed at the top of the Item Bag screen.
- Record how much free space remains before deciding what to use, discard, or buy.
The Pokémon GO Help Center documents a default Item Bag capacity of 350 items. Each Item Bag upgrade purchased from the Shop adds 50 capacity. Gifts and Stickers are excluded from the Item Bag maximum, so they do not consume the space shown by the Item Bag counter.
Inspect Pokémon storage separately
Open your Pokémon list and look for the total-versus-maximum indicator there. Treat that figure as a different budget: a larger Item Bag will not create room for Pokémon, and clearing Pokémon storage will not make PokéStops give you more item space.
A Pokémon GO announcement dated December 2024 said the Pokémon storage limit had been increased to 9,300 and the item capacity limit to 8,300. Those are date-stamped historical figures, not a verified October 2026 maximum. If an exact cap affects your event plan, use the value currently displayed in your account or in a newer official announcement.
Set an event-specific space target
There is no single ideal amount of free space for every event. Start by identifying what the event actually gives you: ordinary PokéStop and Gym items, battle rewards, event-exclusive balls or other temporary supplies, and task rewards. Then decide how many collections you expect to make and leave enough headroom that a short stretch of play will not immediately fill the bag.
Use the event announcement as the authority

- Which items are awarded by event research, battles, stops, or gyms.
- Whether an item is usable only during a particular window.
- Whether unused event items disappear at a stated local time.
- Whether the event runs on multiple days with separate daily deadlines.
Temporary items are not governed by one universal policy. During Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global 2024, unused GO Safari Balls expired at 6:15 p.m. local time on each event day. That example shows why you should not automatically save, discard, or spend a special item without checking the current event’s own notice.

Use this simple calculation:
planned collections × average items per collection + reward buffer = target free spaces.
You do not need a laboratory estimate. Use a conservative buffer based on your route, expected stops, battles, and whether an accessory will keep collecting while you are occupied. If the target is larger than the space you can create safely, compare the cost of an upgrade with the value of uninterrupted collection.
Clear space without throwing away useful supplies
1. Identify what the event requires
Before deleting anything, separate items you expect to use during the event from items that are merely occupying room. Look at the event’s tasks, encounter method, battle schedule, and reward descriptions. Mark temporary items with a deadline so they are not mistaken for ordinary supplies.
2. Use items through normal play
Using an item is usually preferable to discarding it when it supports your existing plan. Spend supplies on activities you were already going to perform, rather than forcing unnecessary actions solely to lower the counter. The Help Center identifies using items as a direct way to free space.

3. Discard only deliberate surplus
When use will not reduce the total quickly enough, discard items from the Item Bag screen. Remove quantities you can replace easily or do not expect to need for the event. Keep a written or mental minimum for supplies that protect your route from interruptions, and review the quantity after each reduction.

4. Recheck the counter
After each batch, return to the top-of-screen total and maximum. Stop when the free space meets the event target, not merely when the bag is no longer flashing as full. A small reserve gives you room for the next stop, Gym, or battle reward.
5. Reassess on the event morning
Do one final check immediately before leaving. Items earned after your earlier cleanup may have reduced the available space, and an event announcement may have changed. The live counter is more reliable than a note made several days earlier.
Use or discard versus buying capacity
The practical choice is between creating immediate room and increasing the ceiling. Neither option is universally best.

Choose cleanup first when the problem is temporary and your existing supplies are excessive. Consider an upgrade when full-bag interruptions are recurring or when the event’s expected rewards justify permanent extra room. Confirm the price shown in your own Shop before purchasing; prices, bundles, and regional offers can vary and are not specified by the Help Center guidance used here.
How to handle event-exclusive items
Do not treat every special item as permanent
Event items may be issued in a fixed quantity, tied to a daily schedule, or removed after a deadline. The GO Safari Ball rule from Wild Area: Global 2024 is a concrete example: unused balls expired at 6:15 p.m. local time on each event day. That does not establish a rule for future Wild Area events or any other event.
Build a deadline check into your route
- Write down the event’s local end time for each day.
- At least once before that time, open the Item Bag and count the temporary item.
- Use or otherwise follow the event’s stated handling instructions before the deadline.
- Do not carry the old rule into a new event unless the new announcement repeats it.
If an announcement is silent about expiry, do not assume the item will disappear or remain forever. Look for an updated official notice or an in-game message before making a disposal decision.

Prepare Pokémon storage for catches
Item Bag capacity controls supplies; Pokémon storage controls the space available for Pokémon. Prepare both, but keep the decisions separate.

Review the storage counter
Open the Pokémon list and note the free slots shown by the game. Compare that number with your event objective: casual play, a long catching session, or deliberate collection of research rewards will require different headroom.
Decide what deserves a slot
Use your own event plan to define priorities before the first encounter. For example, you may want room for every event encounter, only high-value specimens, or a short list of evaluation candidates. Making the rule before the event prevents hurried decisions when the map is busy.
Do not use the wrong upgrade
An Item Bag upgrade adds item capacity only. It does not expand Pokémon storage. The December 2024 announcement reported separate limits—8,300 for items and 9,300 for Pokémon storage at that time—illustrating that the two systems are administered independently. Because those figures are historical, verify the current values in-game.

If Pokémon GO Plus + will spin stops during the event, clear the Item Bag before turning the accessory on. Pokémon Support states that the device will not spin a PokéStop when the Item Bag is full, so a full counter can silently remove the item-collection benefit you expected.
Accessory checklist
- Check the Item Bag total and maximum immediately before connecting the accessory.
- Leave enough headroom for the route, not just for the first stop.
- Confirm that temporary event items and their deadlines are understood.
- Check the bag again after a break or after manually collecting rewards.
- If spinning stops, inspect the Item Bag first; a full bag is a documented cause.
The accessory does not expand capacity. It changes how you collect, while the same Item Bag limit still applies.
Event-day operating routine
- Before departure: Open Main Menu → Items, confirm the live total and maximum, and verify Pokémon storage separately.
- Before the first stop: Compare free space with the event target you set from the announcement.
- During the route: Watch for warnings, use planned supplies, and avoid waiting until the counter reaches the maximum.
- At breaks: Recheck temporary items, reward quantities, and any deadline shown by the event.
- Before a daily cutoff: Follow the event’s stated instructions for expiring items; do not substitute a rule from an older event.
- After play: Review what remained, so the next event cleanup starts from actual usage rather than guesswork.
What happens when the Item Bag is already full?
You approach a PokéStop or Gym
You cannot collect new items while at or above the limit. Create space by using or discarding items, then try the interaction again. The same restriction applies to item rewards from battle encounters.
You are using Pokémon GO Plus +
The accessory will not spin the Photo Disc while the Item Bag is full. Open the game, make room, and then resume accessory collection.
You receive an event reward
A full bag blocks new item storage. Clear space before claiming or collecting item-based rewards whenever the event interface allows you to choose the timing. If the event has a special expiry rule, check that rule before deciding whether to delay collection.

Common preparation mistakes
- Cleaning only after the event starts: You lose early collections while deciding what to remove. Set the target beforehand.
- Confusing Item Bag and Pokémon storage: The counters and upgrades are separate. Inspect both.
- Assuming Gifts and Stickers consume item capacity: The Help Center excludes them from the maximum.
- Relying on an old cap: The 8,300 figure is tied to December 2024, not confirmed for October 2026.
- Applying one event’s expiry rule to another: Safari Ball expiry at 6:15 p.m. local time was specific to Wild Area: Global 2024.
- Expecting Pokémon GO Plus + to solve a full bag: It will not spin a PokéStop when the Item Bag is full.

Use this order when time is short:
- Check: Read the Item Bag total, maximum, and Pokémon storage counter.
- Understand: Read the current event announcement for rewards, requirements, and expiry times.
- Set: Choose a free-space target based on your route and collection method.
- Reduce: Use planned supplies, then discard only deliberate surplus.
- Expand: If the target still cannot be met, compare a 50-slot upgrade with the value of uninterrupted play.
- Verify: Recheck both counters on the event day and before connecting Pokémon GO Plus +.
