You can improve the chances of finding a phone after its battery dies, but no setting guarantees a location. Set up the phone’s built-in locator while you still have it, enable the platform’s offline and low-battery options, and know whether your model supports anything beyond a last-known location.
How to find a phone if the battery dies
Use the location service tied to the phone’s account from another signed-in device or the service’s official app or website. Read the result carefully: a last-known location is the most recent position the phone sent or stored, not confirmation that the phone is still there. A nearby-device network may report a location while the phone is offline, but that also does not guarantee a live position.

There are three different outcomes to understand:
- Last location: The phone sent or stored a position before it lost network access or charge. Apple says Find My may show an iPhone’s last known location for up to seven days when its battery has run out and a current location is unavailable. That is how long the location may remain visible—not a claim that the phone keeps transmitting for seven days. Apple explains Find My location availability.
- Offline network finding: Nearby participating devices help relay a location from the missing phone. Whether this works depends on the phone’s settings, model, and nearby network coverage; it does not necessarily provide a current live position.
- Powered-off or power-reserve finding: Certain supported hardware can retain a limited ability to send a finding signal after shutdown or battery depletion. This is model-specific and time-limited, not indefinite tracking.
Because these outcomes differ, first prepare the phone before it goes missing. A locator generally cannot be enabled remotely after the phone has been lost.

Set up Find My on an iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone. The phone must be connected to your Apple Account.
- Turn on Find My iPhone, Find My network, and Send Last Location.
Apple says Find My network can locate a supported iPhone while it is offline and for up to 24 hours after it is turned off, or up to 5 hours in power reserve mode. These are Apple’s stated limits for supported hardware, not a promise that every iPhone will be found. Send Last Location automatically sends the phone’s location to Apple when its charge becomes critically low. As Apple puts it, “If your device’s battery charge level becomes critically low, its location is sent to Apple automatically.” See Apple’s iPhone Find My setup guide.

Set up offline finding on a Pixel
Prepare the phone for finding and configure offline finding in Google’s Find Hub settings. Google distinguishes finding with no network, in busy places, or everywhere, depending on the option selected. The setting affects whether nearby devices can help locate an offline phone.
Google specifically says the Find Hub network can locate supported Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series phones for several hours even if the battery runs out or the device is powered off. Do not assume this powered-off capability applies to every Pixel or every Android phone. Google also notes that an offline device may show an encrypted location stored from when it was last online; that stored position is not proof of a current location. Follow Google’s instructions to prepare a Pixel for finding.

Set up finding on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s U.S. support instructions call for enabling these options in its finding service:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Allow this phone (or tablet) to be found
- Send last location
- Offline finding
Samsung also describes remotely extending battery life by turning on Maximum power saving mode through its finding service. SmartThings says Offline Finding uses Bluetooth detection by nearby Samsung community devices to help locate a supported Galaxy device. That describes offline assistance, not proof that every Galaxy remains locatable after it is fully powered off. See Samsung’s U.S. setup instructions and SmartThings’ explanation of Offline Finding.

What to check when comparing phone-finding features
Before relying on a feature, check the details for your exact phone and account rather than assuming that “offline” means “powered off.” These are the distinctions that determine what the service may show:
- Model: Is your exact phone supported for finding after shutdown or battery depletion?
- Type of result: Does the feature show a stored last location, or can a network of nearby devices report the phone?
- Phone state: Is the claim about losing network access, critically low charge, actual battery exhaustion, or user-initiated shutdown?
- Time limit: Is there a stated window for powered-off or power-reserve finding?
- Setup: Is the phone connected to the right account, and are the relevant finding and offline options enabled?
- Network nearby: Does offline finding depend on participating devices being close enough to detect the phone?
Consider a separate tracker for the item that carries your phone
A compatible item tracker attached to a phone case, bag, or other item that usually travels with the phone can be an independent backup for finding that item. It does not activate the phone’s built-in locator or make a dead phone trackable. The tracker has its own battery and network requirements, so check compatibility with your phone’s ecosystem. Apple documents Find My network accessories, including AirTag, in its Find My guidance.
