Before installing an Android or Nothing OS update, protect your data, connect to reliable Wi‑Fi, and make sure the phone has at least 50% battery (or remains connected to a charger). On the phone, open Settings > System > System updates to check for the update. Once installation starts, leave the phone alone until it finishes.
This preparation applies to routine stable updates. If you are installing a beta, make an additional backup and accept that pre-release software can affect stability, battery life, and performance.

Quick preparation checklist
- Back up important information: Go to Settings > Google > Backup, review the status, and tap Back up now when you need a fresh manual backup.
- Give automatic backup time to run: Nothing describes its default process as running while the phone is on Wi‑Fi and left on standby for two hours while charging.
- Use a stable Wi‑Fi connection. Avoid relying on mobile data for a large system download.
- Meet the power requirement: Have at least 50% battery, or keep the phone connected to a charger.
- Start from the correct menu: Open Settings > System > System updates and follow the prompts shown for your device.
- Do not interrupt installation: Once the upgrade begins, do not press the power button or perform other actions until the phone reports completion.
- If this is a beta: Back up photos, contacts, messages, call logs, and any other data you cannot replace, then decide whether pre-release software is appropriate for your phone.
What preparation does—and does not—require
A normal over-the-air update is designed to be started from the phone’s existing system software. Nothing’s official instructions do not require a factory reset, special update utility, or a universal amount of free storage before every update. Do not erase data pre-emptively simply because an update is available.

If it says that more free space is needed, follow that message; if it does not mention storage, there is no published universal threshold you need to meet in advance. The official guidance also does not guarantee that every app’s private data or every type of account content is included in the standard Google backup, so important apps should be checked separately.

Step 1: Make a current backup
Use the built-in Google backup path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Choose Backup.
- Review the account and backup information shown.
- Tap Back up now if you want to start a manual backup immediately.
Nothing identifies Google’s default backup process as the phone’s standard backup method. The manual command is useful immediately before an update because it gives you a clear point at which you asked the phone to save current information.
Allow automatic backup to complete
If you are relying on automatic backup instead of tapping the button, Nothing’s backup instructions describe a specific condition: the phone should be connected to Wi‑Fi and left on standby for two hours while charging. Treat that two-hour period as a product instruction for the automatic process, not as a guarantee that every item on the phone will be copied.
Keep the phone powered and undisturbed long enough for the backup status to refresh. If the backup page shows an error, an old timestamp, or an account problem, resolve that before installing rather than assuming the update will create a backup for you.
Check data that may be app-specific
A system backup is not a promise that every app stores every piece of data in Google’s backup. For information that would be difficult to recreate, open the relevant app or service and use its own export, sync, or backup feature. Examples include authenticator accounts, locally stored notes, downloaded files, project databases, and conversations in apps that do not synchronize their history automatically.
Photos and contacts should be checked in the services you use: confirm that photos have finished syncing and that contacts are associated with the correct account or have another export. The goal is not to create multiple copies of everything; it is to identify irreplaceable data that the standard device backup may not cover.

Step 2: Prepare Wi‑Fi and power
Connect to reliable Wi‑Fi
Nothing Support says the phone should be connected to Wi‑Fi for a smooth download and installation. Use a network that remains available for the whole download, especially if the update is large. A connection that repeatedly drops can pause or restart a download and may leave the update waiting for you to retry.
If you are on a captive-portal network, such as hotel or café Wi‑Fi, complete its sign-in first. Avoid switching between networks while the update is downloading. If your home router has separate networks, choose the one with the strongest, most stable signal where the phone will remain during the process.
Reach 50% battery or stay connected to a charger
Nothing’s update instructions specify a battery level of at least 50% for a smooth download and installation. The alternative is to keep the phone connected to a charger while you update. A charger is optional support for meeting the power guidance; Nothing does not specify a required wattage or a particular charger model.
Use a sound cable, adapter, and outlet, and place the phone where the connection will not be knocked loose. If the battery is below 50% and you cannot keep the phone connected, charge it first instead of starting the update and hoping the remaining charge will be enough.
Step 3: Check for the update in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System updates.
- Let the phone check for available software.
- Read the version and installation information presented, then choose the available download or install command.
The exact wording of the final button can vary with the software already installed, but the path is Settings > System > System updates. Follow the device’s own prompts rather than installing a package from an unrelated source.

When no update appears
Nothing distributes updates by device and rollout, so an update may not be available to every phone at the same time. Nothing’s support guidance says that if the phone reports no new update, there is no new version available to that phone at that time. A “no update available” message is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the phone is malfunctioning.

Do not reset the phone merely to force an update. A reset removes local data but does not change the rollout assigned to your device.
Step 4: Start the download and installation safely
After you accept the update, keep the phone on the prepared Wi‑Fi connection and connected to power when possible. Read any warnings on the update screen, including restart notices or an estimated duration. The phone may reboot as part of the process; that is different from manually interrupting it.
Leave the controls alone during the upgrade
Nothing Support’s upgrade instructions state: “Don’t press the power button or perform any actions during the upgrade process, and wait for the update to be completed.” Once the installation phase begins:
- Do not press the power button to try to speed up, pause, or restart the process.
- Do not open apps, change settings, remove the cable, or switch networks unless the phone explicitly instructs you to do so.
- Do not assume a dark screen means the update has failed; a restart or a period with no visible progress can be part of normal installation.
- Wait for the phone to return to the operating system and display a completion state before using it normally.
If the phone appears inactive, continue following the on-screen guidance and allow a reasonable amount of time for the installation to finish. Forced interruption is more likely to create a recovery problem than simply waiting.

Storage: respond to the phone’s message, not a made-up threshold
The official Nothing pages reviewed for this procedure do not publish one free-storage minimum that applies to every Nothing phone and every update. Update packages, temporary installation files, and individual device configurations can differ.
Start the update normally. If the update screen specifically reports insufficient space, use the cleanup instructions it provides. Remove or move only data you have verified is backed up, and avoid deleting app data blindly. If no storage warning appears, there is no need to clear a particular number of gigabytes just to satisfy a universal rule.
Stable updates and beta software are different decisions

What the beta warning means in practice
Nothing’s US beta page describes Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta as pre-release software that may contain bugs or affect device stability, battery life, and performance. That warning applies to the beta program; it should not be used to imply that every ordinary stable update has the same known behavior.
Before joining a beta, make a backup that includes the categories Nothing names—photos, contacts, messages, and call logs—and check any additional app data that matters to you. A beta is not the right choice for a phone that must remain predictable for work, travel, emergency communication, or two-factor authentication.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The backup timestamp is old or the manual backup fails
- Reconnect to a working Wi‑Fi network and return to Settings > Google > Backup.
- Check that the intended Google account is selected and that the phone is charging if you are waiting for automatic backup.
- Use Back up now again and wait for the status to update.
- For irreplaceable information, use the relevant app’s own export or sync option instead of relying only on the device backup.
Do not begin a beta installation while you are uncertain whether essential data exists somewhere recoverable.

The download will not start or keeps stopping
- Verify that Wi‑Fi is connected and that other devices can reach the internet through the same network.
- Move closer to the access point or use a more stable network.
- Check the battery level and connect the charger if the phone is below 50%.
- Return to Settings > System > System updates and follow the prompt again.
A temporary network or rollout condition can prevent a download without indicating a permanent fault. Avoid repeatedly switching networks while a download is in progress.
The phone says no update is available
Nothing’s support guidance treats that message as meaning no new version is available to that phone at that time. Confirm connectivity and check again later. Do not use a factory reset as an update-discovery method.
The update reports insufficient storage
Follow the device-specific message. First confirm that important files are backed up, then remove or move only what you can safely restore. Because Nothing does not state one universal storage threshold, do not treat an internet-supplied number as a requirement for every model.

The installation appears paused
Keep the phone connected to power and leave it alone. Nothing specifically instructs users not to press the power button or perform actions during the upgrade. If the phone eventually displays an error or recovery instruction, follow that on-screen instruction or contact Nothing Support rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.
