The safest preparation is straightforward: confirm that your exact model supports the release, make a current backup, free enough storage, connect to reliable power and Wi‑Fi, then use the update method intended for your device. iPhone and iPad updates normally run from Settings; a Mac uses System Settings. If an iPhone or iPad cannot update wirelessly, a trusted computer running the appropriate Finder or iTunes version is the supported fallback.

Use this pre-update checklist

Complete these checks before selecting Install or Download and Install:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Identify the release and your model. Check Apple’s compatibility list for the specific iOS, iPadOS, or macOS release you intend to install.
  2. Back up the device. Use iCloud or a computer for an iPhone or iPad. For a Mac, use Time Machine or another separate backup destination.
  3. Check available storage. The device needs room to download, prepare, and install the update.
  4. Arrange power and connectivity. Use Wi‑Fi for a wireless iPhone or iPad update and keep the device connected to power.
  5. Choose the correct installation route. Use Software Update on the device first; use a trusted computer if that route is unavailable or fails.
  6. Leave the installation alone. Restarts, progress bars, and temporary blank screens can be normal. Do not interrupt a Mac by putting it to sleep or closing a laptop lid.

Confirm that your device can run the release

iPhone and iPad compatibility

A major release is not automatically available for every device that can install the current operating system. Apple says unsupported iPhone and iPad models cannot install the latest software. Before reorganizing your schedule around an update, identify the exact model in Settings and compare it with Apple’s compatibility list for that release. Do not rely only on the product family name: different generations of the same family can have different support.

If Software Update does not offer the release, compatibility is one possible explanation, but it is not the only one. Network access, storage, and Apple’s update service can also affect what appears. Check those practical conditions before concluding that the model is unsupported.

Mac compatibility

On a Mac, Software Update filters the choices it presents for that particular Mac. Apple explains that the pane offers updates and upgrades compatible with the Mac model. If no major upgrade appears, the Mac may already be current for its supported branch, or it may not be compatible with that release. Verify the model separately when you need to plan for a particular version, rather than assuming that an absent offer is a temporary error.

Compatibility lists and menu labels change as Apple publishes new releases. Check the release-specific Apple Support page immediately before starting, especially when the update is a major upgrade rather than a small security update.

Back up before installing

A backup gives you a separate copy of your information and settings if an installation is interrupted or something else goes wrong. Apple’s iPhone and iPad guidance tells users to back up before updating, and Apple Support’s macOS guidance states: “Before installing new software, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac.” A backup is a precaution, not a promise that every problem can be reversed automatically; its usefulness depends on having a recent, accessible copy.

iCloud or computer backup for iPhone and iPad

Backup choice How it helps What to consider before updating
iCloud Runs without connecting the device to a Mac or PC and keeps the backup separate from the device itself. Confirm that the iCloud account has enough available storage and that the backup has completed successfully.
Computer Stores a local copy on a Mac or Windows PC, which can be useful when cloud space or network speed is limited. Use a trusted computer with enough disk space, keep the connection stable, and verify that the backup finished before disconnecting.

Choose either destination in advance and allow it to finish. If you use both, treat the second copy as additional protection, not as a substitute for checking the first one. Keep the device connected to power during a lengthy backup and avoid starting the operating-system installation while a backup is still running.

Time Machine for a Mac

Time Machine is built into macOS and can back up Mac files to external storage. Apple recommends using a destination other than the Mac’s internal disk, so the backup remains separate if the Mac or its internal storage has a problem. An external hard drive or SSD is an optional way to provide that destination; the right capacity depends on the amount of data and the backup history you want to retain.

  1. Connect the external drive or SSD to the Mac.
  2. Open the Time Machine settings and follow the prompts to select the connected storage as the backup disk.
  3. Read any setup warning carefully. macOS may ask to erase or reformat the selected disk; do not accept that prompt if the disk contains files you still need elsewhere.
  4. Let the initial backup complete before installing macOS. The first run can take substantially longer than later incremental backups.

If you already maintain another supported, separate backup destination, confirm that its latest copy is complete and readable. The essential protection is separation from the internal disk, not a particular brand, capacity, or enclosure.

Make enough storage available

Apple identifies insufficient storage as a reason an iPhone or iPad may not update, and its deployment documentation says a device needs sufficient free space to download, prepare, and install an update. The installer may need working room in addition to the final size of the downloaded package, so a device that appears to have just enough free space can still fail during preparation.

Free space on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings > General > [Device] Storage. The bracketed item is labeled according to the device and software release.
  2. Review the recommendations and the list of apps using the most space.
  3. Enable Offload Unused Apps if you want iOS or iPadOS to remove an app while retaining its documents and data. The app can be downloaded again later when it is available in the App Store.
  4. Delete large downloads, videos, podcasts, or apps you no longer need if more room is required. Check that important files are stored elsewhere before deleting them.
  5. Return to the storage screen after cleanup so the available-space figure has refreshed.

Do not install a third-party “cleaner” merely because an update needs space. Apple’s own storage tools show what is consuming capacity and provide the relevant offload and deletion controls.

Storage on a Mac

macOS also needs free space to download and stage an upgrade. Review the Mac’s storage settings and remove or move only data you have backed up. Emptying a bin, deleting large installers, or moving media to an already verified external copy can recover space, but do not remove system files or an active backup destination. If Software Update reports that more space is needed, follow its recommendation and recheck before retrying.

Provide power and a reliable connection

For a wireless iPhone or iPad installation, Apple’s consumer instructions advise connecting to Wi‑Fi and power. Wi‑Fi avoids using a mobile-data connection for a large download and reduces the chance that a network change will interrupt it. Pause other large downloads on the same connection if the update is unusually slow.

Apple’s deployment documentation lists these technical minimum battery levels for a user-initiated update: 20% for iPhone, 20% for iPad, 20% for a Mac with Apple silicon, and 50% for an Intel-based Mac. These are deployment thresholds from Apple’s documentation, not a universal recommendation to begin every installation at exactly that charge. In practice, connect the device to power whenever possible and keep a Mac plugged in throughout an upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the download cannot reach Apple’s update service, retry after confirming that the internet connection works normally. A server-connection message does not prove that storage or compatibility is the cause; treat each condition as a separate check.

How to prepare and update an iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Finish the backup. Use iCloud or a computer and wait for the completion indication.
  2. Check the model. Compare it with the compatibility list for the intended release.
  3. Check storage. Open Settings > General > [Device] Storage and make room if necessary.
  4. Connect to Wi‑Fi and power. Keep the device connected while downloading and installing.
  5. Open Software Update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  6. Read the offer. The screen may show a small update, a major upgrade, or no update. Confirm that the displayed release is the one you intend to install.
  7. Select Download and Install. Enter the device passcode if requested and accept the on-screen terms.
  8. Wait for completion. The device may restart and show an Apple logo or progress indicator. Leave it connected to power and do not force a restart while the progress indicator is moving.

Menu wording can vary by operating-system release and region, but the Settings path remains the normal consumer route for iPhone and iPad software updates.

If wireless updating fails: use a trusted computer

Apple supports updating an iPhone or iPad through a computer when the wireless route is unavailable, the update does not appear as expected, or the installation repeatedly fails. Back up first and use a computer you trust, because the computer will have access to the device during the update.

Which computer software to use

Computer Apple software When this route is useful
Mac with macOS Catalina or later Finder The device cannot complete the wireless update or the update is not offered normally.
Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier iTunes The older macOS does not manage iPhone or iPad updates through Finder.
Windows PC iTunes A trusted Windows computer is available and the wireless route is not working.
  1. Install the appropriate current version of Finder through macOS updates, or iTunes for the supported Mac or Windows environment.
  2. Connect the iPhone or iPad with a dependable cable and unlock it.
  3. Approve the trust prompt on the device and computer if it appears.
  4. In Finder or iTunes, select the device and choose the command to check for or install an update.
  5. Keep the cable connected while the computer downloads, prepares, and installs the software. Do not close the application or restart the computer during the process.
  6. Wait until the device returns to its normal lock or Home screen before disconnecting it.

A computer update is an alternative installation path, not a bypass for an unsupported model. Compatibility and storage requirements still apply.

What to do when an iPhone or iPad will not update

Work through the causes in this order so that one symptom does not lead you to an unrelated fix:

Best Value
Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
  • The release is not listed: verify the exact model against Apple’s compatibility list, then check Wi‑Fi, storage, and whether the device already has the newest software available to it.
  • “Not enough storage” appears: open the device-storage screen, use Offload Unused Apps or remove unneeded content, and try again after the free-space figure updates.
  • The download is very slow: stay on Wi‑Fi, connect power, and pause competing downloads or streaming on the same connection.
  • The update server cannot be reached: confirm that other internet services work, retry later, and then use the trusted-computer route if the same error persists.
  • The wireless installation repeatedly fails: make sure the backup is complete, restart only when the device is not showing an active installation progress indicator, and try Finder or iTunes.

These symptoms do not all have one cause. If a computer update also fails, record the exact on-screen message before seeking Apple Support; the wording helps distinguish a storage, connection, software, or hardware problem.

How to prepare a Mac for a major macOS update

Complete the Mac preflight

  1. Confirm the Mac model and compare it with the compatibility information for the intended macOS release.
  2. Complete a Time Machine backup to external storage or verify another separate, supported backup.
  3. Check available storage and remove or move only data that exists in a verified backup.
  4. Connect the Mac to power. For a portable Mac, keep the power adapter connected from download through the final restart.
  5. Close unsaved work in open apps and make sure you know any administrator password the installer may request.

Start the update from System Settings

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Choose System Settings > General > Software Update. You can also search for “Software Update” when the menu layout differs.
  3. Review the offered update or upgrade and its release notes.
  4. Select the available install, upgrade, or restart action. macOS may request the administrator password.
  5. Follow the prompts until the Mac begins installation.

Software Update offers only software compatible with that Mac. If the expected upgrade is absent, return to the compatibility and storage checks rather than repeatedly forcing the same installation.

What happens during Mac installation

Keep the Mac awake and do not close a MacBook’s lid while macOS is installing. Apple says the Mac can restart more than once and can show a progress bar or a blank screen temporarily. Those visual changes do not by themselves indicate failure.

Do not disconnect power, press and hold the power button, or interrupt the process merely because the screen changes. Wait for the login window or desktop to return. If the progress display remains unchanged for an unusually long period, use Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance for that release rather than guessing at a recovery action.

Choosing the right installation route

Situation Best first route Reason
Compatible iPhone or iPad with stable Wi‑Fi and enough space Settings > General > Software Update It is the normal on-device method and needs no computer.
iPhone or iPad update is missing, repeatedly fails, or cannot download reliably Trusted computer using Finder or iTunes The computer provides an alternative download and installation path.
Current Mac with a compatible upgrade System Settings > General > Software Update macOS manages the compatible update for that Mac model.
Mac with no expected upgrade offer Compatibility, storage, and backup review No offer may mean the Mac is already current for its branch or is not supported.

After the update finishes

Unlock the device, confirm that your important apps and files are present, and check that the backup destination still reports a recent backup. On an iPhone or iPad, revisit Software Update if you need to confirm the installed release. On a Mac, open Software Update again only after the first installation has fully completed; a separate follow-up update may be offered.

Keep the backup until you are satisfied that the upgraded system works normally. If you freed space by deleting or moving files, restore only from the verified copy you made before installation.
