Prepare the account, backup and transfer source before turning on the new device. For an iPad, choose Quick Start, an iCloud backup or a computer backup. For a MacBook, use Migration Assistant from the old Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk or a Windows PC. Keep the old device powered and available until you have checked important files and accounts on the new one; erase or hand it off only afterward.
Apple changes setup labels and supported operating-system combinations over time, so use the current instructions shown for your device and region. The sequence below separates the iPad and MacBook workflows and explains which choice fits each situation.

Prepare both devices before starting
Confirm Apple Account access
Have the Apple Account email address and password ready. Keep access to the trusted device or trusted phone number available if Apple asks for verification during setup. If you do not have an account, iPad setup allows you to create one during the process.
Make a fresh backup
Create a current backup, or verify that an existing backup is usable before beginning migration. Check its date and, where shown, its size. A backup is especially important if the old device could fail during transfer or if you plan to restore without keeping the old device nearby.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Keep the old device charged and accessible
Do not pack away, trade in or reset the old iPad or MacBook yet. Keep it charged and, for a direct wireless transfer, connected to power and close to the new device until the migration finishes. Transfer time depends on the amount of data and the network or cable connection.
Check management requirements
If a school or employer manages the device, follow the organization’s instructions before starting. Apple directs managed iPad users to their administrator or teacher because enrollment and security settings can change the normal setup path.
Choose the right iPad transfer method
The best route depends on what you still have and whether you need to keep using the old iPad during the move.

| Route | Source needed | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Start and direct transfer | A nearby compatible iPhone or iPad | Copies settings and preferences; supported operating-system versions can transfer data directly. Both devices remain occupied until migration completes. |
| Restore from iCloud | A usable iCloud backup and Apple Account sign-in | The new iPad can become usable while apps and other content continue downloading over Wi-Fi. |
| Restore from a computer backup | A Mac or PC containing the iPad backup | Useful when the backup is stored locally rather than in iCloud. The computer and its backup must be available during setup. |
Apple also says eligible purchasers of a new iPad may receive temporary iCloud storage for a backup, free of charge, for up to three weeks from the purchase date. That is Apple’s stated temporary-backup window, not a guarantee that applies to every buyer or region.
Set up a new iPad with Quick Start
Before opening the new iPad
- Bring the previous iPhone or iPad into the same room.
- Make sure both devices have compatible, current versions of iOS or iPadOS for the transfer features you intend to use.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the old device, and connect both devices to power.
Start the transfer
- Turn on the new iPad and place it beside the old iPhone or iPad.
- Follow the Quick Start prompt that appears on the old device.
- Use the old device to authenticate when prompted, then scan the animation shown on the new iPad.
- Enter the old device passcode on the new iPad and sign in with the Apple Account when requested.
- Choose the option for direct transfer if you want data copied from the old device rather than downloaded from iCloud.
- Leave both devices near each other and connected to power until the progress indicator finishes.
Direct transfer occupies both devices, so do not rely on the old iPad for work, calls or other tasks during this period. A large photo library or a slower wireless connection can extend the process; Apple does not promise a fixed completion time.

Restore a new iPad from an iCloud backup
Check the backup first
On the old device, verify that the latest backup completed and note its date. If the backup is old, make a new one before starting. Keep the Apple Account password available because the restore flow requires sign-in.
Restore during setup
- Turn on the new iPad and proceed until the screen offering data-transfer choices appears.
- Select the option to restore from an iCloud backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the backup.
- Choose the backup by date and size, selecting the most appropriate recent copy.
- Keep the iPad on Wi-Fi and power while apps, photos and other content download.
The iPad can become usable before every item has finished downloading. Leave it connected to Wi-Fi and power so the remaining content can complete in the background.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the iPad is already set up
Apple notes that restoring through the initial backup setup flow may require erasing an iPad that has already been fully configured and returning to the Hello screen. Decide before adding substantial new data. An erase removes the new iPad’s current contents, so verify that anything newly created there is backed up or copied elsewhere first.
Restore an iPad from a computer backup
- Connect the new iPad to the Mac or PC that contains the backup.
- Open the computer’s iPad-management or device-sync interface and choose the option to restore from a backup.
- Select the backup by its date and size.
- Keep the iPad connected until the restore completes, then allow additional apps and media to synchronize.
This route is useful when the computer holds the only suitable backup or when the backup is too large or inconvenient to download from iCloud. You may still need to sign in to the Apple Account associated with purchases and services.
iPad transfer problems and decisions
The old device does not show Quick Start
- Confirm that both devices are unlocked, nearby and running compatible operating-system versions.
- Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the old device.
- Connect both devices to power and restart the process if the prompt was dismissed.
The transfer appears stuck
Keep the devices together and powered rather than interrupting a long transfer. Data size and network conditions affect timing. If the process fails repeatedly, use the verified iCloud or computer backup instead of repeatedly restarting an incomplete direct transfer.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
You cannot sign in or restore purchases
Confirm that you are using the Apple Account associated with the backup and purchased content. Have the trusted device or phone number available for verification. Apple’s setup documentation establishes the need for account sign-in but does not replace its account-recovery process if credentials are unavailable.
Prepare a MacBook for Migration Assistant
Update and connect both Macs
Install available macOS updates on both Macs before a wireless migration. Plug both laptop computers into power, turn on Wi-Fi and place them near each other. Apple also advises temporarily turning off antivirus software, firewall software or a VPN if one is installed, because these can interfere with discovery or the connection. Re-enable them after migration.
Choose a migration source
| Source | When it fits | Connection considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Another Mac | You have the old MacBook available and want documents, apps, user accounts and settings transferred. | Wireless works; a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster when the Mac models and ports support a suitable cable. |
| Time Machine backup | The old Mac is unavailable, or you want to migrate from an existing backup. | Connect the backup disk and select it as the Migration Assistant source. |
| Startup disk | The source data is on a disk that can be selected by Migration Assistant. | The disk must be connected and readable by the new Mac. |
| Windows PC | You are moving from a Windows computer rather than another Mac. | Follow the current Windows migration requirements shown by Apple for the relevant macOS version. |
Apple describes Migration Assistant this way: “Migration Assistant transfers documents, apps, user accounts and settings from one Mac to another.” It does not erase the old Mac.
Make or verify a Time Machine backup
If you do not have a usable backup, an external hard drive or SSD can serve as Time Machine storage. Apple’s instructions describe setting up external storage as a backup disk and using that backup as a Migration Assistant source. The required capacity, connection and drive type depend on the amount of data and the Mac’s ports; no single model is required.
Move data from one MacBook to another
During the new Mac’s first setup
- Turn on the new MacBook and proceed through Setup Assistant until it asks whether you want to transfer information.
- Select the option to transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup or another startup disk, as appropriate.
- On the old Mac, open Migration Assistant and choose to transfer information to another Mac.
- When both Macs display a security code, verify that the codes match.
- Select the categories to transfer, such as user accounts, applications, documents and settings.
- Start the migration and leave both Macs connected to power until it finishes.
Run Migration Assistant later
If you skipped migration during Setup Assistant, open Migration Assistant on the new Mac afterward and choose the same source types. The old Mac remains intact, so you can retry with a different source if the first attempt does not contain what you need.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Resolve an account-name conflict
If a user account with the same name already exists on the new Mac, Migration Assistant presents a choice. Replace the existing account only if you are certain its contents are no longer needed; otherwise rename the incoming account so both accounts remain available. Review which account contains the transferred documents before deleting anything.
Choose cable or wireless
Wireless migration is convenient, but Apple’s MacBook Pro guidance says a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster. The correct cable depends on the ports and models of both computers, so identify those ports before buying or borrowing a cable. Do not assume that every USB-C cable supports the same transfer technology.
Large migrations may take hours. Keep the Macs near each other for wireless transfer, or leave the approved cable connected for a wired transfer, and avoid putting either Mac to sleep.

Time Machine backup
- Connect the Time Machine backup disk to the new MacBook.
- Open Migration Assistant during Setup Assistant or later in macOS.
- Select the option for a Mac, Time Machine backup or startup disk.
- Choose the connected backup, authenticate if requested, and select the categories to import.
- Allow the transfer to finish before disconnecting the backup disk.
Startup disk
Select the startup disk when Migration Assistant lists available sources. This is appropriate when the source data is on a readable disk rather than in a Time Machine backup. If the disk is not listed, check its connection and whether the new Mac can read its format.

Windows PC
Choose the Windows PC option in Migration Assistant and follow Apple’s current compatibility and connection instructions for the macOS version installed on the new Mac. Keep the PC available for the entire transfer and do not shut down either computer during the process.

Mac migration issues to check before assuming data was lost
Apps do not open
Apple warns that incompatible or newer app versions may not transfer or work on the new Mac. Check the app developer’s current version requirements and reinstall a compatible release rather than repeatedly rerunning Migration Assistant.
Email appears incomplete
Email data may transfer, but Apple notes that the email account itself may need to be set up again in the email app. Have the account sign-in details and any required verification method ready.
The transfer cannot find the other Mac
- Install available macOS updates on both Macs.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is on and the computers are close together.
- Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall or VPN software that could block the connection.
- Use a suitable direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection when wireless discovery remains unreliable.
Verify the new device before clearing the old one
Migration and handoff are separate phases. First sign in and test the new device, then decide what to do with the old one.
- Open several essential documents and confirm that expected folders are present.
- Check photos and videos, messages, contacts and calendars.
- Launch the apps you rely on and verify that they contain the expected data.
- Confirm access to email, cloud services and other accounts.
- Check that purchases and subscriptions appear under the correct Apple Account.
- Make a fresh backup of the new device after the transfer settles.
Erase or hand off the old iPad
Only after verification should you sign out, erase, sell, trade in or give away the old iPad. Follow Apple’s current handoff instructions for the iPadOS version installed.
Do not manually delete photos, contacts or other iCloud-synced items while still signed in as a way to “clean” the old iPad. Apple warns that deleting synced data can remove it from iCloud and from other connected devices. Use the official erase-and-sign-out process instead.
Erase or hand off the old MacBook
After checking the new MacBook, use Apple’s current “Erase your Mac” guidance for the old computer. Apple provides an erase or reset option in Mac settings under Transfer or Reset, but the exact sequence and availability depend on the Mac model and macOS version. Do not improvise a partial deletion when preparing a Mac for another person.
Quick Recap
A short decision checklist
- Secure Apple Account credentials and verification access.
