Start with local flood alerts and your home’s exposure: clear obvious drainage blockages, move valuables above floor level, and be ready to evacuate if officials tell you to. These simple steps can reduce avoidable damage, but no last-minute measure guarantees that water will stay out.
This U.S.-focused checklist is for a heavy-rain forecast, not a substitute for local emergency guidance. Flood risk and conditions can change quickly and vary by location, so use your city or county’s alerts and instructions throughout the weekend.

Before the rain: check risk and make a plan
Check local information first
- Look up your community’s flood risk and sign up for local emergency alerts. Monitor weather updates and official instructions as the forecast develops.
- Identify evacuation routes and alternatives. Plan where household members will meet and how you will contact one another if separated.
- If anyone in the household may need assistance leaving, plan transportation and support in advance.

Gather essentials and protect records
- Set aside several days of essential supplies, including medications, drinking water and food, a flashlight, and a way to charge phones. Keep needed items easy to carry if you have to leave.
- Place important documents in a waterproof container and keep digital copies somewhere you can access if you leave home.
- Charge phones and backup batteries before conditions worsen.
Before the rain: reduce avoidable water damage
Take immediate, low-effort steps
- Clear leaves and debris from gutters and drains you can reach safely. Do not climb onto a wet or unstable roof.
- Move valuables, electronics, and irreplaceable items off basement or ground-level floors and to a higher level.
- If flooding is plausible, keep essential items and evacuation supplies away from areas likely to take on water.

Consider equipment only where it suits the property
FEMA lists sandbags as a temporary barrier and recommends considering check valves and sump pumps with battery backup. A sump pump can provide backup for some homes, but it is not a substitute for evacuation and cannot guarantee that water will not enter. Do not wait until flooding begins to install equipment or place a barrier, and never enter floodwater to deploy one.
FEMA’s hurricane-preparedness guidance also mentions water alarms and protective materials such as plywood and plastic sheeting. It discusses elevating a furnace, water heater, and electrical panel in flood-susceptible homes, along with basement waterproofing or raising a building according to need and budget. These are property-specific mitigation measures—not routine weekend tasks. Ask a qualified local professional what is appropriate for your home.

For substantial flood-risk reduction, FEMA’s hurricane preparedness guidance describes longer-term measures such as elevating utilities and building elevation. Their suitability depends on the property and may require professional assessment.

As the threat develops: follow alerts and be ready to leave
- Keep monitoring local weather alerts and emergency instructions. A forecast is not a guarantee of where or when flooding will occur.
- Leave promptly if authorities order an evacuation. Use the route officials recommend and do not drive around road barriers.
- Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. FEMA’s 2025 flood hazard sheet warns that just one foot of moving water can sweep away a vehicle; that figure is a warning, not a safe-depth threshold. FEMA flood hazard information says, “Do not drive through floodwaters.”
If flooding starts: prioritize life over property
- Follow evacuation instructions and leave immediately when ordered. Do not try to save belongings or install barriers once water is rising.
- If trapped in a building, move to the highest level. Do not climb into a closed attic, where rising water could trap you.
- Stay away from floodwater and wet electrical equipment. Do not touch electrical equipment while standing in water.
After flooding: wait for clearance and check safety
- Return only when authorities say it is safe.
- Do not assume tap water is safe to drink; check with your local health department.
- Use protective gear during cleanup, and keep clear of wet electrical equipment.
Insurance is not a last-minute fix. Standard property policies may not cover flood losses, so review your policy and confirm terms with your insurer before a threat develops. FEMA’s 2020 hurricane guidance says a flood insurance policy purchased then took 30 days to go into effect; verify current terms and timing directly, since coverage details can vary.
