If officials issue an evacuation order, leave; never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater.
Start with alerts and your household plan
Flooding can happen anywhere it rains, and flash floods can develop quickly. Ready.gov’s practical reminder is: “Where it can rain it can flood.” Check the forecast and local emergency alerts, and learn the flood exposure around your home. A map can help you understand risk, but it cannot rule out flooding at a particular property.

Decide where household members will go if officials tell you to evacuate, and how you will contact one another if service is disrupted. Assemble several days of essential supplies, including medications, chargers, and pet food or other pet necessities. Keep copies of important documents in a waterproof container and make password-protected digital copies. Move valuables and original documents above likely water levels or into protected storage. Ready.gov flood preparedness guidance recommends planning ahead and protecting essential items.

Clear ordinary drainage paths safely
Remove accessible leaves and debris from gutters and drains before the rain. Check that downspouts are connected and that their outlets are not visibly blocked. FEMA’s January 2025 flood hazard information sheet puts it plainly: “Declutter drains and gutters.”
#1 Best Overall
- 50-Gallon Capacity: Provides ample storage for harvested rainwater, ideal for watering gardens, lawns, and plants.
- Durable Construction: Made from UV-resistant polyethylene for long-lasting durability and protection from the elements. Made of 100% Recycled plastic.
- Overflow Valve: Built-in overflow valve for managing excess water and the option to connect multiple barrels for increased storage.
- Convenient Spigot: Easy-to-use plastic spigot for quick and efficient water retrieval.
- Low Maintenance: Easy to install and maintain, offering a simple, sustainable solution for homeowners.
- Do not climb onto a roof or ladder if conditions, equipment, or your ability make the work unsafe. Arrange qualified help for hazardous or hard-to-reach maintenance.
- Check where each downspout discharges. Water should flow toward a suitable lawn or garden area away from the foundation, not toward a neighbor’s property or a spot where it will cause erosion. Penn State Extension explains these considerations in How Can I Control Stormwater on My Property?
- A sump pump with battery backup may be one useful measure for a basement or a home with known water-intrusion exposure. It addresses a different pathway from surface runoff and does not guarantee flood protection.
Choose a roof-runoff solution that fits the site
A simple redirection may be enough for some properties; storage or a designed landscape feature may suit others. The right choice depends on whether the site can safely receive and absorb water, where overflow will go, and any local rules or property constraints.
| Option | What it does | Key fit and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Downspout extension | Moves roof runoff toward a suitable lawn or garden area. | Keep the discharge away from the foundation and neighboring property, and avoid an outlet that causes erosion. See Penn State Extension’s stormwater guidance. |
| Rain barrel | Captures and temporarily stores some roof runoff. | Route the overflow hose away from the building; maintain the screen and system. See Penn State Extension’s rain barrel guide. |
| Rain garden | Uses a deliberately designed landscape area to manage runoff. | Requires site and soil assessment, safe overflow routing, and suitable placement. Penn State Extension advises locating it at least 10 feet from a building foundation and avoiding unsuitable sites such as areas near septic systems. It is a longer-term project, not a last-minute weekend fix. See Best Practices for Rain Gardens. |
Before changing grades or digging, observe where water flows and where soil is bare or eroding. Major grading changes made in a rush can create new drainage problems; stormwater design depends on soil, slope, site conditions, and local rules. If an existing rain garden is part of the plan, clear debris from its inlet, outlet, and overflow route. Penn State says a rain garden should typically drain within approximately 12–24 hours; ponding longer than 48 hours may indicate a drainage problem. Site behavior varies, so these time frames are guidance rather than a guarantee for every garden.

Protect the yard from avoidable runoff pollution
Avoid fertilizing the lawn just before heavy rain: runoff can carry excess fertilizer away. Penn State Extension’s Reducing Water Pollution in the Home Landscape discusses ways to reduce pollution from residential landscapes.
When flooding threatens, put safety first
Follow local alerts and instructions, and evacuate when officials order you to leave. Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Water can hide hazards and make roads unsafe: Ready.gov states that six inches of moving water can knock a person down and one foot can sweep a vehicle away. These are agency safety warnings, not guarantees that shallower water is safe. Its guidance is: “Turn Around. Don’t Drown!” See Ready.gov’s flood safety guidance.

If you are considering flood insurance, Ready.gov says a policy typically takes up to 30 days to take effect; confirm the effective date and terms with your insurer rather than assuming new coverage will apply immediately.
