Prepare an iPad mini in this order: make and verify a backup, let iCloud finish syncing, complete any listed repair, sign out of your Apple Account, handle Find My and Activation Lock, erase the iPad, and confirm that it reaches the Hello screen without requesting the former owner’s account. Only then package it for a trade-in or give it to another person.
Why the order matters
An iPad mini contains two separate things that must be dealt with before handoff: your personal data and the ownership lock that protects the device if it is lost. Erasing local content protects the next user from seeing your information, but it does not replace a backup. Find My and Activation Lock protect the hardware, but leaving them attached to your Apple Account can prevent a legitimate buyer or trade-in center from activating it.

Do not start by deleting photos, contacts, notes, or documents one at a time. If the iPad is still signed in to iCloud, manual deletion can also remove those items from iCloud and other connected devices. A verified backup followed by Apple’s erase command is the safer sequence.
1. Back up the iPad mini and transfer what you need
Make the backup while the iPad still has your account, apps, and local data. Apple’s iPad preparation guidance places this step before account changes, erasure, selling, giving away, or trading in.

Create a current backup
- Connect the iPad mini to a reliable Wi-Fi network and power if the backup may take time.
- Start a fresh backup using the backup method you normally rely on. Do not assume that an older backup contains the latest photos, files, messages, contacts, or app data.
- Wait for the backup to finish, then check its completion time and device identity before continuing.
The exact backup destination can vary with your setup, but the decision point is the same: you should be able to identify a completed backup made from this iPad mini, not merely know that backups are enabled.
Move the backup to the replacement iPad
If you are upgrading rather than simply selling, transfer the backup to the new iPad before erasing the mini. Open the replacement and confirm that the information you actually need is present:
- Photos and videos you expect to keep
- Files and documents stored locally or through your cloud services
- Messages and contacts
- App installations and the app data that matters to you
Open representative apps instead of checking only that their icons appear. Some apps require their own sign-in or cloud restore process, and an app’s presence does not prove that its latest data transferred. Keep the old iPad mini available until the replacement has passed this check.
2. Let syncing finish and resolve unfinished repairs
Before changing account settings, allow iCloud syncing to complete. A backup and synchronization are related but not identical: a file that is still uploading or a photo that is still processing may not be available on another device yet.
Check for an unfinished repair
Open Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. If the page shows a Finish Repair item, complete that process before sending the iPad mini away. Apple includes this check in its current preparation guidance because a device with an unfinished repair may not be in the expected handoff state.
If the repair cannot be completed, pause the trade-in. Record what the screen says and contact the repair provider or the trade-in program before erasing or shipping the device. Do not assume that an outstanding repair is harmless simply because the iPad still starts normally.

3. Sign out of your Apple Account
Signing out disconnects the iPad mini from iCloud, the App Store, and related Apple services. Perform it after your backup and transfer checks, not before.
- Open Settings.
- Tap the Apple Account name at the top of the sidebar.
- Scroll to the bottom of the account page.
- Tap Sign Out and authenticate when asked.
Read each prompt carefully. The objective is to remove your account association from this iPad mini while retaining the verified copy of your information in your backup and iCloud. If the sign-out control is unavailable, or the iPad demands credentials you do not have, stop rather than handing over a device that still belongs to your account.
4. Remove Find My and Activation Lock
Activation Lock is the ownership check tied to Find My. A trade-in center or new owner needs the iPad mini released from that check before the device can be activated normally.
Eligible iPadOS 27 or later trade-ins
On an iPad mini running iPadOS 27 or later, Apple provides Ready for Repair or Trade In for eligible devices. This workflow can keep Find My on while the device is in transit or undergoing an eligible repair or trade-in, so the iPad remains secure and findable during that period.
- Open the Find My app.
- Select the iPad mini in your device list.
- Choose Repair or Trade In.
- Tap Enable.
- Authenticate with your Apple Account password.
Eligibility and the exact choices shown on screen determine whether this route is available. If the option does not appear, use the standard Find My removal process for your iPadOS version and trade-in instructions.
Earlier iPadOS versions
For systems without the newer workflow, turn off Find My in Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My [device]. Apple states that turning off Find My automatically removes Activation Lock. Complete this before the handoff; otherwise the recipient may see an ownership prompt during setup.

Do not confuse hiding the device from your personal list with releasing it. The required result is that the iPad mini no longer asks for your Apple Account when a new owner activates it.
5. Erase all content and settings
After the backup, sync, repair, account, and Find My checks, erase the iPad mini using the built-in command:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPad.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow the authentication and confirmation prompts until the process completes.
The erase removes local personal information, including Apple Pay cards, photos, contacts, music, and apps stored on the iPad. It does not delete the copies already stored in iCloud. Apple also states that, when the process completes correctly, erasing turns off Find My and Activation Lock.

A restart or progress screen during the process is normal; the meaningful completion signal is the setup screen described in the next section.
6. Verify the handoff state before shipping or giving it away
Wait for the iPad mini to finish erasing and start from the beginning of setup. The screen should display Hello, ready for a new owner to choose a language and region.
Test the ownership boundary without completing setup with your own account. The iPad should not request the previous owner’s Apple Account. If it does, the device is still associated with you; do not ship it or transfer it until Find My, Activation Lock, and the account sign-out have been corrected.

This check also protects you from an incomplete erase. A home screen, your wallpaper, your passcode prompt, or any personal notification means the process did not end in the required state.
7. Package the iPad mini and document the transaction
Once the Hello screen appears without a former-owner account request, prepare the physical handoff according to the selected program’s instructions. Requirements for accessories, packaging, shipping, and in-store drop-off vary by provider and region, so follow the instructions attached to your specific estimate.
Keep an ownership and shipping record
- Record the iPad mini’s serial number before it leaves your possession.
- Save the trade-in estimate and the condition information you submitted.
- Keep the shipping receipt, tracking number, and any drop-off confirmation.
- Photograph the device and package if the program accepts shipped trade-ins and you need a condition record.
Retain these records until the provider confirms receipt and finishes its inspection. A quoted estimate is not a universal guaranteed value: trade-in eligibility and payout depend on region and the device’s inspected condition.

Apple directs owners to Apple Trade In or recycling after the preparation steps. You may also be considering another provider. The available evidence does not establish a universal iPad mini valuation or a cross-provider winner, so compare the terms of the actual offer rather than relying on a generic value calculator.

These questions are separate from Apple’s device-preparation requirements. A favorable quote is not useful if the provider’s inspection, shipping deadline, or revised-offer policy does not work for you.

If the iPad mini has already left your possession
If you forgot to erase the device before it was shipped or given away, use Find My to remotely erase it as soon as possible. Remote erasure protects the local data, but it does not by itself remove Activation Lock. After the erase, complete the account-removal step so the new owner can activate the iPad mini.
Tell the recipient or trade-in provider that the device was remotely erased and that you are completing the release. Do not treat a successful remote-erase status as proof that the ownership lock has been cleared.
Troubleshooting the most important failure states
You cannot sign out
Do not erase and ship a device that still shows your Apple Account. Confirm that you have the account credentials required by the prompt. If you cannot authenticate, recover access to the account before handoff or contact Apple support through an official channel.
Find My cannot be turned off
Check whether the iPad is eligible for Ready for Repair or Trade In on iPadOS 27 or later. If it is not, return to the standard Find My settings path and authenticate there. A missing switch, an error, or a device that remains listed after the operation means the release is not complete.

Leave it connected to power and allow the erase to finish. If it returns to a passcode screen or the old Home Screen, personal data may still be present. Repeat the erase from Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings after resolving any account or repair issue.
Parts and Service History says Finish Repair
Complete the repair workflow or ask the repair provider what must be done before trade-in. Sending the device while that item remains unfinished can conflict with the provider’s inspection or Apple’s preparation requirements.
The recipient sees an account request
Stop the activation attempt. The iPad mini is still linked to the former owner. The former owner must complete the Find My and Activation Lock release; an erase alone is not sufficient when the ownership association remains.
Final decision: when is the iPad mini ready?
The iPad mini is ready for an upgrade transfer when the replacement contains the data you need and the old device has completed the backup, sync, repair, account, Find My, and erase sequence. It is ready for a trade-in or new owner when it starts at the Hello screen, shows no request for the former owner’s Apple Account, and is documented and packaged under the selected program’s current instructions.
