Start by confirming your country, GST registration, return type and reporting period: there is no single set of GST filing changes that applies across jurisdictions. For Indian businesses, reconcile outward-supply data before GSTR-3B and review the form’s newer auto-populated calculations. In Singapore, check your business’s assigned InvoiceNow phase and ensure invoice data can be transmitted on time. Canadian GST/HST registrants should confirm the electronic-filing rules and any applicable exception. In every case, use your own records to verify portal or software data, and build review time into the filing process.
First identify which rules apply to your business
GST return forms, deadlines, portals and compliance changes depend on the country. Before changing a workflow, confirm the legal entity and registration, the returns it must file, its reporting frequency and the period being prepared. Also identify any special status that changes the obligation, such as a non-resident digital-service provider in India or a business assigned an InvoiceNow implementation phase in Singapore.

The changes below are jurisdiction-specific. India’s GSTR-3B changes do not apply to Singapore or Canada, and Singapore’s InvoiceNow timetable is not an Indian filing deadline.

The GST Council Secretariat reported changes to GSTR-3B in its July 2025 and January 2026 newsletters. Treat auto-populated values as inputs to review, not as a substitute for the business’s invoices, ledgers and calculations.

| Period or feature | Reported change | Preparation action |
|---|---|---|
| July 2025 tax period onward | The July 2025 newsletter reported that auto-populated liability values in GSTR-3B would become non-editable. It directed taxpayers to make outward-supply changes through GSTR-1A before filing GSTR-3B. | Reconcile invoices, credit notes and debit notes to the relevant outward-supply return, resolve discrepancies through the appropriate process, then review the resulting GSTR-3B values. Confirm current portal behavior and instructions before filing. |
| January 2026 tax period onward: Table 5.1 | The January 2026 newsletter reported an interest calculation that accounts for the minimum cash balance in the Electronic Cash Ledger from the return due date until tax is paid or offset. | Compare the portal’s calculation with the payment and ledger records, and retain the calculation and supporting evidence. |
| January 2026 tax period onward: liability breakup | The tax-liability breakup is auto-populated based on document dates for supplies reported in GSTR-1, GSTR-1A or IFF for a previous tax period. The newsletter describes the values as suggestive and says taxpayers may modify them upwards based on their records and computations. | Check the document dates and source records behind the suggested breakup; document any difference and the treatment applied. |
| January 2026 tax period onward: Table 6.1 | The newsletter reported suggested cross-utilisation of ITC for IGST after available IGST ITC is exhausted. | Check the suggested utilisation against available input tax credit and the business’s ledger records before accepting the return figures. |
| Cancelled taxpayers’ final filing | The newsletter reported that interest on delayed filing of the last applicable GSTR-3B is collected through the final return, GSTR-10. | If the registration is cancelled, confirm which final returns apply and reconcile any delayed-filing interest as part of closing the account. |
These changes were described in GST Council Secretariat newsletters; a newsletter does not establish that every portal screen or filing workflow remains unchanged. Check current GSTN instructions for implementation details applicable to the period you are filing.
Check for older unfiled returns
A September 2025 GST Council Secretariat newsletter search result reported a three-year restriction on filing certain returns after their due dates. The effective timing and precise return scope are not established here, so do not assume that every return is covered or use an unverified start date. Identify open periods and check the current GSTN advisory and applicable notification promptly; a filing restriction could affect whether an overdue return remains available.

Keep special obligations separate
The Government of India GST Portal’s GSTR-5A FAQ says non-resident OIDAR service providers supplying non-taxable persons in India must file GSTR-5A monthly by the 20th of the succeeding month, unless extended, including for a nil period. This is a specific obligation for that category, not a general deadline for Indian GST-registered businesses.
Singapore: check your InvoiceNow phase and transmission setup
IRAS says GST-registered businesses must submit invoice data using InvoiceNow-Ready Solutions, with implementation phased by category. The milestones below are from IRAS guidance. They are not a substitute for the business’s own notification: check the applicable phase or use IRAS’s implementation-date calculator.

| Implementation date | Business category described by IRAS |
|---|---|

| 1 April 2026 | Businesses applying for voluntary GST registration on or after this date, regardless of incorporation date or structure. |
| 1 April 2028 | New compulsory registrants and existing registrants with annual supplies of S$200,000 or less. |

| 1 April 2030 | Existing registrants with annual supplies of S$4 million or less. |

For this schedule, IRAS defines annual supplies by the total value of standard-rated, zero-rated and exempt supplies in Box 4 for prescribed accounting periods ending in calendar year 2025. IRAS identifies exemptions that include overseas entities and businesses liable to register wholly because of the reverse-charge regime; check the full current guidance to determine whether an exemption applies to your circumstances.
Make sure the software can send the required data
- If you use off-the-shelf accounting software: check whether it appears on IMDA’s accredited InvoiceNow-Ready list. Arrange a Peppol ID through the solution provider or an access-point provider, then activate GST InvoiceNow submission.
- If you use an in-house enterprise system: contact an IMDA-accredited access-point provider about the connection and data transmission setup.
- Set the transmission deadline in your workflow: IRAS says invoice data is due by the earlier of the date the relevant GST return is filed or its filing due date. Do not schedule transmission only for the statutory due date if you expect to file earlier.
- Confirm account authorization: check that the people responsible for setup and filing have the required Corppass authorization.
In a 26 February 2026 announcement, IRAS said more than 63,000 businesses were already on InvoiceNow and expected about 90,000 additional businesses to join through the new phases. That announcement also described free InvoiceNow-Ready solutions for SMEs through March 2031, a new SME grant of up to S$1,000 and a grant of up to S$5,000 for larger early adopters; IRAS said further support details would follow. Check the current programme terms before relying on support or choosing a provider.

Canada: verify the GST/HST electronic-filing rule for your period
The Canada Revenue Agency says GST/HST registrants generally must file each return electronically for reporting periods ending in 2024 and later, subject to stated exceptions. It also says a return is required for every reporting period even when there was no business activity. The due date for filing and payment depends on the reporting period and filer category, so confirm the CRA’s current requirements for the particular account rather than applying an Indian or Singapore deadline.
Build a repeatable filing-readiness process
- Assign ownership. Name the preparer, reviewer, approver and filer, and make sure each has the portal access or system permissions needed for their role.
- Map the data path. Document how a source invoice becomes a bookkeeping entry, a return figure, a tax calculation, a payment and a filed return. Mark which amounts are manually entered, imported or auto-populated.
- Reconcile before preparation. Match sales invoices and credit or debit notes to the relevant outward-supply reporting; reconcile input tax credit, cash and credit ledgers, offsets and prior-period corrections. For India, complete any relevant outward-supply correction before relying on GSTR-3B liability values.
- Review exceptions, not just totals. Investigate mismatched periods, missing documents and portal suggestions that differ from source records. Record why a difference occurred, who resolved it and how it was reflected in the return.
- Set internal cutoffs ahead of external deadlines. Reserve time for review, corrections, funding a payment, portal problems and capturing filing and payment acknowledgements. In Singapore, account for the earlier-of filing-date-or-due-date invoice-data deadline.
- Retain a complete filing record. Keep source records, reconciliation workpapers, approvals, the filed return, payment evidence and portal acknowledgements together under a consistent retention process.
- Track changes by filing period. Review regulator notices when preparing each return and maintain a change log with the notice date, affected period, owner, system or process change and review sign-off.
For a complex correction, unusual transaction or uncertain local obligation, seek advice from a suitably qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction. The preparation steps here support a controlled filing workflow; they do not replace jurisdiction-specific tax advice.
