How to Prepare Subtitle Tracks in Video Files for an OBS YouTube Stream

For visible subtitles on a prerecorded video in OBS, use a VLC Video source, enable its subtitle track, and test the result in a YouTube stream. For captions viewers can turn on or off, an SRT file beside the video is not enough: YouTube Live requires caption data to be delivered separately through a compatible encoder or supported caption software. Choose the path based on whether you need on-screen text or selectable captions.

Choose the kind of subtitles you need

“Subtitle track” can mean different things in a YouTube workflow. The main distinction is whether text is part of the video picture or delivered to YouTube as captions.

Method Can viewers toggle or select captions? Best suited to Key limitation
YouTube Studio captions for an uploaded video Yes Videos and replays Uploading captions for a video does not send them during an OBS live stream.
OBS displays a subtitle track in the scene No. The words are part of the picture. Prerecorded clips where always-visible text is acceptable Compatibility and timing depend on the file and source; test your setup.
YouTube Live captions Yes, when caption data reaches YouTube correctly Streams needing viewer-controlled captions Requires a compatible encoder or supported caption-delivery workflow.
YouTube automatic live captions Yes, if available for the stream A possible fallback Current guidance describes eligibility and language limitations; live captions do not remain on the video after the stream.

OBS displaying text on screen is not the same as OBS sending a live caption track. If viewers need to choose a language or switch captions off, use a delivery path that sends caption data to YouTube.

Prepare and check a subtitle sidecar file

A sidecar subtitle file contains timed text separate from the video. YouTube recommends SubRip (.srt) or SubViewer (.sbv) as basic formats. For SRT, use plain UTF-8; YouTube says it does not recognize styling markup. YouTube’s supported subtitle formats describe file requirements and other supported formats.

Example SRT structure

1
00:00:00,600 --> 00:00:04,160
Welcome to the stream.

2
00:00:04,160 --> 00:00:06,770
Today we are preparing subtitle tracks.

Each cue has a sequence number, start and end time, and the text shown during that interval. Match the file to the exact video version: an edit that changes duration or timing can make otherwise correct cues appear too early, too late, or disappear before the ending.

Preflight checklist

  • Confirm the subtitle language and that the file matches the final video edit.
  • Use a supported format; SRT or SBV is a straightforward starting point.
  • Save SRT as plain UTF-8, without relying on style markup to appear.
  • Check cue timing, especially the opening and closing cues and any sections changed during editing.
  • Review spelling, speaker labels, and relevant non-speech audio cues for the intended audience.
  • Test the subtitle file in the playback path you will actually use.

Display a subtitle track in OBS

OBS documents a VLC Video source with “Subtitles Enabled” and “Subtitle Track” controls. Subtitles are off by default for this source, and VLC must be installed for VLC Video to be available. OBS also documents Media Source support for video containers including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; a supported container alone does not guarantee that a particular subtitle codec or track will work. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed, then open OBS and select the scene that will contain the prerecorded video.
  2. Add a VLC Video source and choose the video file. Use this source when you need its documented subtitle controls.
  3. Open the source properties, enable subtitles, and select the intended subtitle track. The precise available tracks depend on the file and installed software.
  4. Play through the video in the OBS preview. Check that the right language appears, that cues are synchronized, and that text is legible within the scene.
  5. If possible, make a private or unlisted YouTube test stream and watch it in the YouTube player. The audience sees the encoded output, not merely the OBS preview.
  6. If OBS cannot show the track reliably, use a suitable video editor to render the subtitles visibly into a new video export, then test that export in OBS.

Visible subtitles produced this way are composited into the stream image. Viewers cannot use YouTube’s caption control to hide them or choose a different language. And seeing an embedded subtitle track in OBS does not mean it has been passed to YouTube as selectable live captions.

Upload captions to a YouTube video or replay

YouTube Studio’s uploaded-video caption workflow is separate from live caption delivery. In Studio, open the video’s Subtitles area, select a language, choose Add subtitles, then Upload file. Select whether the file includes timing, upload it, and save. YouTube also offers manual entry and auto-sync; for auto-sync, provide a transcript in the spoken language. YouTube cautions that auto-sync is not recommended for videos over an hour or with poor audio quality. Labels may change, so follow the current YouTube instructions for adding subtitles and captions.

This is useful for a replay or uploaded video, but it does not itself put captions into the live OBS output. Treat live and replay caption setup as separate tasks.

Deliver selectable captions during YouTube Live

YouTube’s guidance is direct: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” It documents two routes: captions embedded in the video using EIA-608/CEA-708, or supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP. The ordinary OBS Media Source subtitle display described above is not established as a way to perform that delivery.

Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions

YouTube’s documented embedded-caption setup calls for enabling closed captions in the live setup, selecting Embedded 608/708, and configuring the encoder for EIA-608/CEA-708. While those standards support up to four language tracks, YouTube’s current guidance says it supports one embedded caption track. Recheck the current YouTube Live caption requirements before configuring a stream.

Supported caption software or event ingestion

YouTube also describes supported software that sends captions over HTTP. Its event-caption instructions include an assigned signed HTTP URL and advise keeping system time accurate. Use the current Studio instructions and the workflow for the supported caption service you choose; do not assume that loading an SRT file into an OBS scene will send captions by this route.

What to expect from automatic live captions

YouTube automatic live captions are separate from prepared subtitle tracks. Current YouTube guidance describes English-only live automatic captions, channel and latency restrictions, and possible audio or language limitations. It also says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream. Eligibility and availability can change, so check YouTube’s automatic captioning guidance and the current live settings rather than assuming the feature is available.

Troubleshoot common subtitle problems

  • The subtitle track does not appear in OBS: Confirm you added a VLC Video source, that VLC is installed, and that subtitles are enabled with the intended track selected. If the file still fails, codec, container, operating-system, or library compatibility may be the issue; try a rendered-subtitle export and test it.
  • Text appears in OBS but not as a YouTube caption control: OBS is compositing the words into the image. Use a compatible embedded-caption encoder path or supported caption software that sends data to YouTube for selectable live captions.
  • Captions are out of sync: Check the sidecar against the final video version, especially around edits and the first and last cues. Correct the timings and replay the whole affected section.
  • The wrong language or track appears: Recheck the selected VLC subtitle track and the file’s language/version. Test the full playback rather than relying on the filename.
  • Uploaded captions are absent from a live stream: Studio captions attached to an uploaded video or replay are not live caption delivery. Configure and verify a live caption route separately.
  • Automatic captions are unavailable or disappear after the stream: Check current eligibility and restrictions; YouTube’s guidance says live automatic captions do not persist on the video after the stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your OBS setup is playing a prerecorded video 24/7, you can instead upload the video to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It plays the uploaded video; it does not go live from a camera. Prepare subtitles as part of the video image if you need them visibly present in that loop; this service description does not establish selectable live-caption delivery from a sidecar file.

  • Nothing has to stay powered on at home.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
