For YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, use 4 Mbps for 480p30 or 8 Mbps for 720p30 as starting points, then test with representative motion and audio. Keep only the video files needed for playout on the PC; external storage can free internal space, but it will not improve upload speed or keep the stream running through a PC, power, or network failure.
Separate the three limits before changing settings
A 24/7 stream from a limited-storage PC involves three different constraints. Treating them separately makes it easier to find the actual bottleneck.

- Source-file storage: how much disk space the prerecorded videos occupy. Moving files to an attached drive can relieve pressure on the internal disk.
- PC and power availability: the computer and encoder must remain available for local playout. An external drive does not remove that dependency.
- Upload capacity and stability: the connection must continuously send the encoded stream to YouTube. Lowering the stream bitrate can reduce that demand; moving the source files does not.
YouTube transcodes the incoming live feed into multiple formats for viewers, so the encoder’s job is to send a suitable, stable ingest stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Use a resolution-specific starting point
YouTube’s resolution-specific H.264 recommendations list 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are starting points, not guarantees that a particular Indian broadband connection or PC will sustain a 24/7 stream. A lower resolution and frame rate can reduce the amount of data the encoder sends, but the right choice depends on your content and connection.

If your footage was recorded at 30 fps, there is usually no reason to send it at a higher frame rate merely because the encoder allows it. Choose a setting that preserves acceptable detail and motion while remaining reliable on your connection. YouTube advises testing the connection and choosing stream quality appropriate to it; there is no single India-wide upload-speed threshold established here.
Set the other encoder parameters
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported. The bitrate examples above are specifically the H.264 recommendations.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3. Check the audio in the actual stream, not just in the source file.
Labels and controls vary by encoder. In YouTube Live Control Room, the encoder sends its selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, and YouTube detects those settings. Consult the documentation for your chosen encoder to apply them; YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish one universal PC playlist-loop recipe.

Prepare the files and storage
Keep the playout set small and dependable
- Choose the videos you actually intend to play, and confirm each file opens and has the expected picture and sound.
- Keep the active playout files on the PC’s internal disk if there is enough free space. If source files are consuming the space needed for normal PC operation, an external drive is one option for storing them.
- If you use an external drive, connect it before starting the encoder and confirm that the encoder can still locate every file. Do not disconnect or allow the drive to sleep during playback.
- Use an encoder that supports repeat or playlist playback for prerecorded sources, and follow that encoder’s own instructions for creating a continuous loop. Verify that the transition from the last item back to the first works before starting a public stream.
An external drive changes where the source files are stored. It does not reduce the outgoing bitrate, internet use, PC processing demand, or dependence on household power. Google’s HLS ingestion guide says HEVC generally yields 25% to 50% more data compression at the same video quality compared with H.264, but that is a general codec comparison in the HLS context—not a promise that a particular source file will shrink by that amount. Test the complete loop before going live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy the stream key into your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it.
- In the encoder, select the intended resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, audio codec, and RTMPS destination where supported.
- Load the complete playlist, enable its repeat behavior, and run a private or unlisted test if those visibility choices are available for your stream.
- Let the test run long enough to include representative movement, audio, and at least one playlist transition. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health messages and confirm that audio remains present, the picture is stable, and the loop continues. Do not treat an initial successful connection as proof that a 24/7 run is reliable.
- Only after the test succeeds, switch to the intended live setup and keep monitoring its health.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes stream and health states including good, ok, bad, and noData, along with configuration issue diagnostics. These are indicators to investigate, not substitutes for checking the stream’s actual picture and sound. See the LiveStreams API reference.

Check rights and channel suitability
Having a video file does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its picture or sound. Before adding an item to a public loop, confirm that you own or have permission to use all relevant material, including music and other embedded audio. A 24/7 format does not make copyrighted material safe to use.
Also consider whether the stream adds value for viewers rather than simply repeating material without meaningful context. YouTube’s cited encoder and API pages explain streaming setup and health, not whether a particular channel or video qualifies for monetization. Do not assume that a technically stable stream is automatically eligible for monetization or free of copyright claims.

Local PC or cloud playout?
Local playout keeps the source files and encoder under your control, but it relies on the PC, power, network, storage access, and encoder remaining available. Hosted playout can reduce dependence on a home PC if the service provides the storage and continuous playback you need. Before choosing any hosted service, check its storage limits, support for looping prerecorded video, recovery behavior, price, availability in India, and terms.

Troubleshoot common failures
